  • Good fun!
Platform For Display: PlayStation 4 Edition: Standard Edition
So far my kiddos and I really have a lot of fun with this game! I have loved old school original Spongebob since I was younger and it first aired (I am 33 now.. still love it!..well, the older episodes, haha). So we get a kick out of this. All 3 of us have taken turns playing it. I find it is not overly easy or too difficult for what it is. Im not the best with video games and so its a smidge challenging.. My kids are much better, but still have a blast. Mostly bought for my 8 year old girl, she loves Spongebob with me. But my 11 year old haS fun, too! ... show more

  • NOSTALGIA! One of the best games remastered
Platform For Display: PlayStation 4 Edition: Standard Edition
+ Great Platformer Remastered + The world is fun with updated visuals + Characters are a blast and each have their own style to each environment + It's SpongeBob. - Multiplayer lacking alittle - Some bugs with frustrating controls and moments Basically if you're a fan of SpongeBob, the original game, or just looking for an excellent platformer. GET THIS. I was so excited to hear it was getting remastered, since I played and loved the original so much. So it's the nostalgia for me, but new comers should fine it good as well! With everything updated and looking fresh, you can't really complain. Don't listen to those IGN or Gamespot reviews with bad ratings. Now although I did give some negatives, it's nothing that can be fixed with an update or just getting used to after playing it for awhile. And they did keep original dialogue and music from original which is amazing, some might sound off since it's not the original voice actor from show (Mr. Krabs for example). But nothing to take stars off for. The new mode for Multiplayer is a good bonus from the original, but boring and repetitive in my opinion. And just for $30, it's a steal. GET IT! You won't be disappointed. One of the best SpongeBob games to date. ... show more

  • F.U.N. to the very end
Platform For Display: PlayStation 4 Edition: Standard Edition
This game is pure nostalgia for me. The main thing to remember is that this is a remake of the original from PS2 and that means that it has been optimized tremendously. Most remasters (which this is not) tend to keep the same feel as the original in terms of camera angling and controls. This remake made the game so much easier to play when compared to the original. If you enjoyed the original, you will love this faithful remake! ... show more

  • Great game!
Platform For Display: PlayStation 4 Edition: Standard Edition
If you're a fan of the old game like me or if you're new to this and love platforms, small puzzle games, and finding objects to collect throughout the game, I'd say this would be a great game for you! Even tho there are some faults with the multiplayer mode and the loading screen taking a while (which is not that much of a bother for me), for about $30 I'd say it's a great deal. It perfectly remasters the old game with most of the sound effects and dialogue as well making the cuts look like short pixar films. The best part is that it's a game for everyone! ... show more

  • A Bright, Fun 3D Platformer
Platform For Display: PlayStation 4 Edition: Standard Edition
Spongebob Squarepants debuted in July of 1999. It was the first of the more noteworthy Nicktoons that I didn't really watch, mostly because I had aged out at the time and I was getting more interested in the anime on Cartoon Network's Toonami block than what I perceived as the more kiddie fare on Nickelodeon. I did, however, have Nickelodeon on enough to have seen some Spongebob episodes, so I became familiar with the concept and the core cast. When Battle for Bikini Bottom first released in 2003, I was working in a video game retail store and I sold countless copies of the game that holiday. Critic reviews were generally pretty positive, and customers seemed to like it. But again, having aged out beyond Spongebob by that point, I didn't play the game. All of that background is relevant because as a player with absolutely no nostalgia for either the Spongebob franchise or the original Battle for Bikini Bottom, I really like Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated. In 2003, 3D collect-a-thon platformers were still pretty commonplace on the PS2, Xbox, and GameCube. In 2020, they're much more of a rarity, mostly having been relegated to Kickstarter and indie-developed projects such as Yooka-Laylee and A Hat in Time. It's a genre with which I fell in love on the Nintendo 64, and to this day, it remains fun to run around and collect things in big, open 3D game worlds. GAMEPLAY Battle for Bikini Bottom is a fiercely competent 3D platformer that checks all of the boxes of the genre. There are 100 shiny thingamabobs (here, Golden Spatulas) to collect, plus bonus collectibles (80 socks for Patrick and unlimited shiny things which function as a pseudo-currency). The game has 3 playable characters: Spongebob, Sandy, and Patrick. All three play relatively similarly; they can all perform a basic attack, and all of them have a double jump, which is an instant plus in my book for any 3D platformer. Spongebob has several unique, context-based moves such as attacking flying foes from below or bungee-jumping deep into a pit. Patrick can pick up objects and throw them, and Sandy--easily the best character from a gameplay perspective--can add a lengthy hover to her double jump, which makes it easy to traverse levels while controlling her. The biggest shortcoming of the characters is that while Spongebob is always playable, Patrick and Sandy are only available in certain levels. While it's understandable because Sandy would break the levels if she were permanently available, it feels like a missed opportunity to not have designed around that concept. The game features a number of stages with multiple sub-areas and 10 Golden Spatulas to collect per stage. Traversal is fun, as is figuring out where each of the Golden Spatulas is located. Bikini Bottom serves as a bit of a hub world, but you can quickly warp anywhere you've already visited through the pause menu. This game uses the Banjo-Kazooie approach to its worlds, which means that after collecting a Golden Spatula, you are not kicked out of the world. You can just keep going to find more items, and the stages tend to flow pretty well. There are some technical hiccups with the game, though I can't say I experienced anything too devastating. There were some minor camera issues on occasion. It's also possible to skip to the final boss from the beginning of the game if you're interested in speedrunning it (unless that gets patched). Some of the Golden Spatulas can be a pain to collect. One in particular requires you to move a ball through an obstacle course, and part of that obstacle course can be pretty frustrating. Thankfully, they're not all mandatory in order to reach the end of the game. GRAPHICS Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated is a very bright and colorful game. Visually, it looks like the show, and the characters and textures received a fresh coat of paint here. This is not a complete, ground-up remaster, of course. The visuals are pretty solid, but they look more like early-PlayStation 3-era graphics than PS4-era. However, everything is stylized, and it works due to the cartoony aesthetic. The environments have some fair variety, but they do look a little similar to one another aside from a few specific locations. SOUND The music sounds like something you'd hear in the show. It can get a little annoying after a while, but it never really bothered me. The voices, on the other hand, can be grating. It's not the voices themselves. Most of the show's cast voiced their respective roles here, with the glaring exception of Mr. Krabs, who sounds awful. However, during the course of the actual gameplay, there is a small pool of quips for each character. They get old fast, and they are incredibly repetitive. THE PLATINUM DIFFERENCE Battle for Bikini Bottom is a fun platinum trophy run. It takes between 10 and 15 hours and requires you to collect all of the Golden Spatulas and Patrick socks. All of the other trophies should come throughout the course of working on those two. There aren't any particularly annoying trophies here. While getting some of the Golden Spatulas is a grind-heavy experience, there's a good grinding spot in one of the early worlds that can help you finish it off pretty quickly. CONCLUSION Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated appeals to 3 distinct groups. First, I'd have to assume fans of the show and those who are nostalgic for the original game will love this release. Second, it's a great game for younger players who might be interested in Spongebob Squarepants. Lastly, gamers who are indifferent towards the show but who love 3D platformers will enjoy this game. It's a pretty generic 3D platformer, but releasing at a time where such games are few and far between, it doesn't have much competition. If you don't fall into one of those categories, this is probably a safe game upon which to pass, but if you do, it's definitely recommended. ... show more
