Unknowlingly bought this from HardDriveGeeks. Any warranty service must be made through EverStar which to me is questionable if they'll be around in 2 - 3 years from now. So I'd just use caution and be aware this is the case. Had I known this, I would have spent the extra $5 and purchased the drive from WD directly. Otherwise, the drive appears to be new. Will install tomorrow so I can't speak to if it's functional or not. If it's not, I'll return it and purchased a new one from WD. ... show more

I have previously trusted WD for all my NAS drives because they have typically had a good lifetime. When the first one of my set of 5 year old WD Red 3tb drives failed, I saw this one and said "newest and more cache? sure!". I learned my lesson the hard way. I went through 2 of these drives, neither of which were able to rebuild the raid properly without failing, before finally doing research to see if anyone else had run into it. Turns out A LOT of people have. The SMR technology is NOT NAS FRIENDLY and should NOT BE PART OF ANY NAS PRODUCT. The fact is, they they tried to sneak the technology in and hoped no one would notice. Only after a large outcry did they admit that this was true. So it goes beyond just this one drive - but do not buy SMR for a NAS. The fact that this drive is marketed as a NAS drive is borderline malicious. ... show more

Pay attention to the model number. I need 3TB Western Digital for my TIVO. I ordered this one. It is WD30EFAX. That will NOT work in the Roamio. Need WD30EFRX. The A or R makes a difference!
