Description

WD Purple drives are designed to meet the challenges of 24x7 video surveillance recording. These drives are engineered specifically for surveillance to help withstand the elevated heat fluctuations and equipment vibrations within NVR environments. An average desktop drive is built to run for only short intervals, not the harsh 24/7 always-on environment of a high- definition surveillance system. With WD Purple drives, you get reliable, surveillance-class storage that’s tested for compatibility in a wide range of security systems. Exclusive WD AllFrame technology helps reduce frame loss and improve overall video playback.

I got a chance to install this into my rln8-410 today, format and fire up the nvr. Little did I know that I’m only at 5.508tb after formatting. The drive or whisper quiet just like the stock Toshiba drive on it. It is much more responsive than the stock drive and maybe it’s because the drive is more optimized for nvr? As of now, I’ve got no complaints. Edit 6/14/26: After multiple days of it being use as a continuous read and write drive, I’ve come to enjoy this drive more than the stock drive. The nvr system just responds noticeably faster and I’ve yet to have any problems. ... show more

    • Working Good As Backup
Style: Purple Capacity: 2TB
Works well: quiet, stable, excellent capacity, and good cost/GB. It was a little slow performing a full backup, but that was most likely due to an older USB version connection

    • Two bad units. Buyer beware.
Style: Purple Capacity: 8TB
This is the second faulty bed (WD Purple HDD, 8tb) I have received. I've used Western Digital for years and never had this kind of experience. The first one appeared to be new in original Western Digital packaging. It failed to spin up and would not be.recognized by my system (Reolink RLN36 NVR). It was returned and I reordered the same part number again. For test purposes I repurposed a used Western Digital Black 1tb drive to verify that the system was not faulty. It performs as expected, so I know my system is not the problem. The second drive was not shipped in any kind of factory original packaging. A bubble wrap bag was the only protection, other than the anti static bag immediately around the drive. Upon power up this drive spins up and the heads repeatedly go through a cycle that is far louder than normal - the type of noise a drive makes when failure is imminent - and it never gets recognized by the system. As of this writing my return of the first drive has not been processed and now the second one does not work. I'm out almost $400 of my money and still can't use my system. I plant to buy from a distributor that will send me a properly packaged drive, handled in the correct way before it reaches me. Apparently Amazon and this vendor are not up to that task. ... show more

    • Long term work horse
Style: Purple Capacity: 2TB
Bought one of these for my business’s camera DVR. Opened it up after the drive died to find it was a WD Surveillance drive so I ordered one of these to place it and works perfectly. If this drive last me another 10 years running 24/7, it’s an amazing value.

    • This MUST be included with the new monitor system for a distinguished option to include or decline.
Style: Purple Capacity: 4TB
Perfect fit and operation. This product needs to be added to the new monitor system. It worked great too, but had no option for getting this drive. Instead Amazon AI selected a full size HDD… so i had to spend time, energy and money to send the full size HDD back, then order the proper small size HDD to fit the new monitor system…. which it did beautifully. Once again this SHOULD BE in the new monitor purchase option,I hope to be able this five star review when I see this happen. Otherwise i will drop this review to a 1 star. Thanks Omar ... show more

    • Expensive but works well
Style: Purple Capacity: 8TB
Expensive but works well. Storage is cheap today so a hard drive should not be $400
