  • Blazing Fast + Reliable Data Storage
Size: 8TB Style: 128 MB Cache
As a power user running a home NAS system, I need both speed and reliability from my hard drives. After putting this 8TB WD Red Plus model to the test, I'm thoroughly impressed on both fronts! Using `hdparm` to benchmark, I recorded read speeds exceeding 185 MB/sec when connected directly via SATA. That's faster than Western Digital's claimed speed and almost double what I get from older drives. Transfers and backups take half the time! ++++ hdparm -t --direct /dev/sda /dev/sda: Timing O_DIRECT disk reads: 558 MB in 3.01 seconds = 185.50 MB/sec ++++ In addition to the great performance, this drive runs cool and quiet in my NAS enclosure thanks to the 5400RPM rotational speed. And it's designed for 24/7 operation, giving me confidence in its longevity and reliability under constant use. With 8TB capacity, I've got plenty of headroom for backups, media storage, and archiving important files while still leaving space to grow. And the CMR technology means maximum compatibility with my NAS RAID. For home and small office NAS setups that demand a perfect blend of high capacity, sustained performance, cool operation and proven reliability, the WD Red Plus line is a winner. This drive meets my needs perfectly! ... show more

  • Reliable
Size: 8TB Style: 128 MB Cache
I have been running a NAS in my house for the past 6 years. It runs 24/7 connected to a UPS in case of power failure. I have used a combination of these WD Red drives and Seagate Iron Wolf drives over the years. Not once has one of these drives failed! I upgrade to larger drives as my storage fills up, but most of the drives I have removed had 30-40 thousand hours on them. For a mechanical device, that is a long time. Through the NAS interface I can monitor the temperature of the drives and these run slightly cooler than the Seagate drives, but beyond that are comparable. They both run quiet and play nice with Synology's operating system. In my opinion the quality of these drives in comparison to what you might find in an external drive is worth the extra money. The peace of mind of knowing the drive is high quality and my data stored on it is safe is priceless. The cost of these seem to vary quite a bit. At the lowest price I've seen of about $120 for 8tb they're a bargain. I'm not sure I would pay $160 for one, but they go on sale regularly. ... show more

  • Quiet!
Size: 14TB Style: 512 MB Cache
Best to catch these on sale, but has worked great in a 5x array in a NAS so far for months. VERY quiet with half-decent dampening, much more so than other NAS drives in this capacity I've tested. Note that this noise level does vary by capacity; check the spec sheet and remember that decibels are logarithmic. ... show more

  • So far so good, quiet and solid.
Size: 14TB Style: 512 MB Cache
Bought two OWC units for long term storage onseveral Macs in our small audio and video enterprise. I loaded one of the 4 bay units with four WD Red Plus 14TB drives configured as two Raid 1 mirrored drives. The second unit was configured with just two WD Red Plus 14TB drives also in Raid 1 (two empty bay for future expansion). The assembly was quick after watching one of OWC's installation videos--which probably wasn't needed if like me you've built a computer or assembled an external drive before. As always, follow instructions for installation of both the enclosures and the hard drives. For example, wear a grounding strap when installing the drives. The units powered on immediately and I was able to easily format the units for use with my Mac computers. I chose to forego SoftRaid on either of these units--based on my specific needs at this point, but also because of some of the negative reviews I'd read about the long term cost and reliability of SoftRaid. Both units have run trouble-free for the past month. Besides long term reliability, I was concerned about how quiet the units would be, the amount of vibration I felt (both units sit on desktops relatively close to the computers they are attached to) and operating speed. The units are very quiet and relatively vibration-free. After I assembled the units and attached them to Macs on my network, I had to copy a large amount of data from several Mac and smaller external drives. This took about as much time as I had anticipated and the even with this relatively heavy amount of writing taking place, the units remained quiet and relatively cool. It's too soon to talk about long term reliability but based on reviews of the OWC enclosures and the WD Red Plus (enterprise level hard drives), I am hopeful. I will update my review if my experience suggests otherwise. I think this combination of enclosure and drives provides an effective low cost, reliable long term storage for our video and audio data. ... show more

  • Great price per GB (our current break even point)
Size: 8TB Style: 128 MB Cache
The product is what it says on the tin and installed easily in my Drobo. The larger drive seems to take a bit longer to be recognised etc then the Drobo kicked in and did it't thing to restore the RAID across the NAS - perfect - no issues. In other news - the drive shipped to New Zealand! I paid about $4 extra for freight and it was DHL couriered - well worth it. It arrived 2 full days ahead of schedule... less than 7 days from ordering - super impressed. ... show more

  • So far so good
Size: 8TB Style: 128 MB Cache
I bought them for my new Synology NAS, I hesitated between the red, red plus and red pro and opted for the plus. So far so good, the transfer from my old WD MyCloud went faster than I expected and they have been working well so far. They are a little noisy but I use the NAS for back up so the drive are not continually working ... show more
