  • So far, so good.
Capacity: 2TB Style: HDD
Drive installation went without a hitch, didn't have to tape over a SATA pin to get the drive to run so I attribute that to having some up-to-date drivers/motherboard, no doubt I'm going to forget in a few years time if it gets a second life in another, older machine. Had 16 hrs runtime out of the box when I checked SMART via CrystalDiskInfo. Only other thing that bugs me a little bit is a quite nasty sound when the disk is powered down, a sort of metallic skid/scraping sound from what I can only assume are the heads parking? I have a variety of other Ultrastar drives and none of them sound like this. It seems to be less pronounced than it was before so maybe this drive just needs breaking in? I'll keep backups. ... show more

  • White label disk, will not work out of box in modern PC.
Capacity: 14TB Style: HDD
My drive arrived New although manufactured in 2020, zero hours reported by crystal disk. To get this drive running I had to use a piece of Kapton tape on pin 3 of the sata power connector. At first I believed this drive to be DOA and really was nothing other than this issue to keep it from running. Blocking pin 3 prevents the sata connector from delivering 3.3 volts to the drive and disabling it. Your average consumer would think this drive was broken. Otherwise time will tell, hope to have no other issues and a ton of media storage! ... show more

  • SMART info checks out

True to size. Since it is legacy power you'll either have to use klapton tape or a molex adapter.

  • Great drive, but beware with Classic Mac Pro
Capacity: 4TB Style: HDD
I'm writing this because another reviewer has said this drive works perfectly with a "sliver tower" Mac Pro, presumably a model from 2006 through 2012. Your mileage may vary. I'm describing problems with the 8TB version. I'm having two problems with this drive that are probably related to some features that did not exist when these Mac towers were designed. Problem #1: the drive will not mount when you do a "warm reboot," meaning, a manual restart or any automated restart. To boot the drive you have to shut down all the way, and then start ("cold boot"). This is a minor inconvenience compared with what comes next. Problem #2: the drive will sponteously dismount with no warning, and with no predictable pattern. It does this about once a month. If you catch it quickly, you can avoid major problems (besides lost work) by holding down the power button to do a hard shutdown. If you were using it as a boot drive, the machine would probably just spontaneously shut down. I keep my boot drive on an SSD and use this for my user account. It's a lot of fun to see how the OS freaks out when your logged-in user account disappears. If it happens when you're not around, the OS will eventually try to rebuild your user account on the startup volume, and will point everything to this new phantom volume. And you will have quite a few headaches trying to fix all this and make the machine useable again. TL;DR: I don't recommend this drive on an old Mac, which is a shame, because it's a great drive. It SHOULD work fine in an external drive bay, but not in the internal SATA port. Bonus in a Thunderbolt bay: you'd be able to get the full SATA 3 speed from a RAID array of these, if that's what you're up to. I've read of other people having some of these problems. Some people say they have the mounting issue will all very large drives (I believe 6TB or more). Others claim to not have these problems. So who knows. Is there good news? Yes. The drive is fast, and pretty quiet, and has not ever lost any data. Sustained reads and writes are around 200MB/S. ... show more

  • This Is the Best SATA Hard Drive That I Have Ever Owned
Capacity: 8TB Style: HDD
I ordered a Western Digital 8TB Ultrastar DC HC320 8TB hard drive which my computer detects as a Hitachi HUS728T8TALE6L4 8TB hard drive. After buying one of these drives, I was so impressed with it that I ordered two more. I've been using these drives as storage drives with a Samsung SSD boot drive for several months now in three different computers and they have worked flawlessly. I've always used Hitachi Ultra Star drives for their reliability and performance. This WD drive is a really Hitachi Ultrastar drive that now has a WD label since WD bought Hitachi's drive business. Besides being ultra reliable with a MTBF of 2 million hours, this 7200 RPM drive is also the fastest SATA drive that I have ever tested that wasn't a SSD. I had been using a Hitachi HUS724040ALE640 4TB hard drive for storage and when running the CrystalDiskMark test for Seq Q32T1 test, I got 155 MB/s Read and 147 MB/s write which I thought was pretty respectable. But the Western Digital 8TB Ultrastar DC HC320 blows those scores away giving scores of 263 MB/s Read and 263 MB/s Write for the Seq Q32T1 test. Just for reference my Samsung 850 EVO scored 547 MB/s Read and 512 MB/s Write on the Seq Q32T1 test. This drive has it all speed, reliability, runs cool, and is reasonably priced. I've seen a lot of negative reviews complaining about this drive not having a warranty from WD which is true. However I do feel more confident that the seller that I bought mine from, Platinum Micro, will honor their-5 year warranty after calling them on the phone. I had paid $212.87 for the last drive that I bought from them and two days later Platinum Micro dropped the price on Amazon to $187.50. After doing a search for Platinum Mirco, Inc., I was able to find that they were located in the Los Angeles area and I got their phone number. When I called the number, I got a menu and one of the options was for warranty returns. I selected sales and talked to the salesman there who was very polite and explained I was a little upset that I hadn't even received the drive I ordered yet and the price was now now $25.31 cheaper that when I ordered it. He said no problem that they would refund $25.31 back to my credit card; so I would rate their customer service as excellent. If you want to get really picky, the only thing you might complain about is that it is a slightly noisier that a WD Black drive but it's only slightly louder and I don't think most people will mind. It is so fast I can now transfer files from my SSD to this drive in about half the time it took before using my old 4TB Ultra Star drive. Just buy this drive you won't regret it. ... show more
