It's already been two years since I purchased this product, but the reason I'm writing a review now is because this product is a really good hard drive. Due to the nature of my job, I use hard disks a lot. I always use a hard disk when installing a camera, but before using this product, I always had problems with the hard disk and had to go to service. Since finding, purchasing, and using this product, the number of times I have to go to service for a hard disk problem has become very rare.     • Use these beasts for my personal 3D animation mini-render farm

These robust, high speed, "24-hour video recording" 18TB HD's make for a terrific solution for churning out monster-sized file renderings from 3D software (Maya, Houdini, etc). The things are absolute beasts, and their resilience and beefiness is exactly why I use them for my "small" personal render farm (one 2-disc 36TB RAID-0 for smaller renders, and a 5-disc 90TB RAID-0 tower for bigger renders) in my home office. Sure, I could have gone for the "Black" version that a lot of gamers prefer (if they are using SATA instead of SSD), but these drives are larger capacity with the same speed, and built to handle even more stress. Should last me several years, no problem, but I will collect a couple more to keep on hand in case (or when) any of the originals fail...Eventually, yes, I'll likely go all-SSD in the future, but not until they are at the same price-point, with the same-or-greater TB size, and equally "indestructible". It is actually a 7.6 TB HDD. I have three 20 TB HDDs and all 3 together make less noise compared to this single HDD. Other than this - it is a fast thing. Only a bit too much vibration, heat, and noise to my liking.

Item was DOA out of the box and there is no support, Amazon won’t send replacement. You must send drive back, they receive it, then you get your refund. Error is drive will not initialize as GPT or MBR cyclic redundancy check error upon installation of drive. Tried multiple PC’s error follows drive. I expect more from both WD and Amazon. Will buy another drive from somewhere like Newegg that has a great DOA policy ... show more

Purchased drive for an application that constantly writes content. Read many reviews for both Western Digital purple and Seagate Skyhawk. The reviews were pretty even and Western Digital had a larger 512gb buffer and slightly cheaper. Please note, we purchased the 14tb drive and have 13tb usable after formatting. Please keep this in mind for space planning. Performance has been great. Watching disk queue length and not seeing bottlenecks at the disk level. Longevity is unknown right now. If we experience a premature failure or significant change in drive use experience we will update our review. Right now we are very happy with the drive and have plans to buy more. ... show more
