  • Fast drive, good temps and price! Fast drive, good temps and price!
Capacity: 500GB Style: Gen3 SSD
I bought this new SN750 NVMe drive to move my OS from a Crucial SSD. This drive is noticeably faster. Installation was easy, but I did have trouble cloning my OS to this drive without corruption errors. I ended up backing up my pertinent files and fresh installing windows. Since the motherboard or CPU didn't change, Windows recognized my computer and I did not need to repurchase the OS. That being said and really at no fault to the drive, everything else has gone smoothly. PROS: - The drive is fast: The box says read/writes up to 3400MB/s sequentially. However I've found mine, without any cache enhancements, to be about 2900MB/s. Still very fast. With RAM caching of 4GB (which is what I typically use), read/writes came in about 8000MB/s. See the attached benchmark images for no enhancement runs and with enhancement runs. For reference, with caching my Crucial SSD where the OS used to be would average about 800MB/s. - Temps are solid: My motherboard included a m.2 heatsink which I am using for this. The m.2 slot on my board for the NVMe primary slot is right under the graphics card. So, when that starts putting out some heat, this thing will heat up a little as well. Even with that temperatures are in very respectable ranges. After running my benchmarks for the drive, the average was 41C and hottest was 44C, as seen in the image. After a gaming session, the peak temperature I've seen for the drive was 55C, but typically stays under 48C. - Price: The prices for 3D NAND drives have been coming down and probably will continue to do so. Last year at this time, a 500GB drive was about $250. I picked this one up for $120. These will probably come down some more from there. All good news for us consumers. CONS: My only con would be the issues I had with cloning the drive, most of which are not really related to this drive, but more related to the cloning software and my OS. My final thoughts on this are: this drive performs very close to the Samsung 970 Plus drive. They are also about the same price. The Samsung and this are about the fastest drives you can buy at this price-point and are essentially interchangeable. The SN750 is vastly superior to an SSD, and the differences are noticeable in everyday use. WD products in my experience have been reliable with no drive failing for me in the past. So to anyone looking to get this, I would recommend. ... show more

  • Excellent upgrade at a good price!
Capacity: 500GB Style: Gen3 SSD
Installation was easy from a hardware perspective. From a software perspective it was a little more difficult because I am still holding on to Windows 7 for the moment. If you're on Windows 10 the process should be super easy. If you are trying to use Windows 7 like I was, you'll find it is very difficult to find Windows 7 NVME drivers to allow this drive to be recognized so that you can duplicate your current install over. Microsoft has provided these drivers that are generic but they aren't available that I could find through their web site. The location I found them was on a Lenovo download location and I would recommend that you search there if you're dealing with the same issues I was. Rating the drive itself, performance is excellent. I am getting results that are similar to the others posted in these comments up to 3397.36 MB/s read and 2312.80 MB/s write. I replaced a SATA 128GB Samsung 840 EVO drive with this 500GB drive due to exhausting all of the storage space. The Samsung drive made a huge difference over the prior mechanical drive and had performed well up to the point of replacement. This drive is faster still but the amount of difference that is perceptible is less than what occurred with the move from the mechanical to SSD. The way that I have noticed the improvement this time around was with app and windows load times. Both are dramatically faster than before. In general use most apps were relatively fast before but there is likely an improvement there as well. Either way, if you're on a mechanical drive, this is a no brainer if you have an m.2 slot available. If you're on an SSD and need more space, it's still a no brainer. If you have an SSD with plenty of space, it's a discretional option and it's worth it but not absolutely necessary unless you have heavy load examples like image editing, video transcoding etc. If any of those large file processing items are in play, this is a no brainer once again. ... show more

  • Blazing Ridicucrazy Fast
Capacity: 2TB Style: Gen3 SSD
So THE PLAN(tm) was to change out my SATA SSD for this M.2 NVMe drive. Unfortunately, I ran into a number of configuration problems that I am PRETTY SURE require that I flash my BIOS to be able to boot off the M.2 socket and I'm less than willing to go through that on a computer with a Gen 1 M.2 socket. That said, the read/write speed is 4.5 times that of my SATA SSD. When I cloned the drive, it took a little under an hour to clone 700gigs. Brutally fast, very good component. I'm going to store games and graphic files on here and pick up the active use performance boosts. I don't care too much about losing some boot speed; a long boot up time for my system is already 15 seconds; typically closer to 8. Also, prices dropped. If I had another M.2 socket to play with, I would definitely buy another drive and see about doing whatever black magic hoodoo voodoo that we all do to get it running. But for now, I'm putting it off until I get my new mobo and CPU. 5/5 stars, would buy again. ... show more

  • Top shelf value and performance
Capacity: 500GB Style: Gen3 SSD
The gains in overall speed when upgrading to this m.2 from a traditional SATA mechanical hard drive (5400rpm or 7200rpm) is like night an day. No other hardware upgrade is gonna match or exceed gains based on this scenario. Mechanical drives are dinosaurs of a distant past. How does this m.2 compare to others? Well I have two other m.2 drives that are not WD nor high performance rated for gaming, one in a laptop one in a desktop. I really can't dig up the motivation to crunch & compare performance numbers, if someone doesn't want to take my word on this drive then that's on them, I could care less cause either outcome isn't going to affect my enjoyment of this drive. But since I have some basis for observational comparisons between 3 different m.2 drives, I'll say that even though none of them really left me with performance complaints, I can tell the WD m.2 has superior performance without having to run any benchmarks. Not saying it will blow every other drive out of the water, but the extra ten bucks or so on the price for a high performance drive does come with faster transfers & overall performance. After a few months with this drive I can honestly say I've been very pleased with this purchase. ... show more

  • Crazy speed. Great Value
Capacity: 500GB Style: Gen3 SSD
I've been using SSD in my PC's exclusively since around 2010. Until now it had always been SATA SSDs. Everyone said, going from SATA SSD to NVME SSD isn't that much of a difference, it's not like going from HDD to SSD. However, I find much of my computing these days is running scientific programs rather than games and wow...the difference is unreal. Loading 60GB of data into memory takes 20 seconds. Whereas with a SATA SSD it'd take several minutes. and an HDD, well, best just to let it go overnight. Analyzing large datasets and then writing out the results is much faster with this NVME SSD than a SATA SSD. I just wish my B450 motherboard had more than one PCIe M.2 slot! Tempted to get a PCIE riser card to add more of these bad boys! The WD Black is by far one of the best performers, budget or otherwise. It is TLC flash, but compared to other TLC drives it performs nearly as well as MLC. If you have a laptop it's also worth noting that it's one of the most power efficient NVME drives available. I'm on a desktop so power isn't a big deal but at least I know it's not going to be thermal throttling from heat. Seriously amazing speed, even compared to SATA SSDs, and the price is very reasonable too! ... show more

  • One of the best models out there!
Capacity: 500GB Style: Gen3 SSD
Got this on sale for $60 so even better value for a super fast NVMe Gen 3 x4 3D NAND TLC SSD. Has an great controller and super fast DRAM cache. Easy to setup as a dynamic drive or a boot drive. I use mine on a add in card, as my M.2 port is occupied. WD Dashboard software will only tell you about this drive(or other WD Black products) so no checking up on your other drives. So to enable "gaming mode" you'll have to DL it from WD. It's not unusual for different companies to not list other drives but unfortunate that most don't. don't take that sticker off!! it's a very well designed heat spreader built in! while you can use a heat sink but I have not found it necessary so far with temps never exceeding 46 C . Fantastic drive! ... show more

  • Loving the speed and volume for the price.
Capacity: 500GB Style: Gen3 SSD
I've been a WD fan for decades. I was pleasantly surprised to find this SSD type available by them. I took a gamble and thus far scored really well. I am a graphics and video editor. I need the power and speed to load these heavy software types. (I use Photoshop & Lightroom CC along with Premiere Pro & After Effects to name a few.) I also happen to be a gamer. This SSD has handled whatever I through out at it without pause or hiccup. I'm very pleased with the purchase. I'll return for an update a few months down the line. Side Note: I originally purchased this SSD to clone my other SSD onto because it's storage was too small and it's my C: drive. If you wish to clone your current drive with your complete Windows OS intact it will NOT work. At best you can copy files onto the drive, as storage only. For Windows OS usage you will have to do a completely fresh install and add your programs, drivers, etc manually. That part I wasn't happy about but once I set it up all is fine. This is not a "con" but rather a word of advice. ... show more

  • Very good drive
Capacity: 500GB Style: Gen3 SSD
Bought the 500gb and am using it in my motherboard m.2 with the heatsink that came with the mobo. For SSD I have so far defaulted my trust to Samsung Evo, however the WD Black drives seem to be competing with Samsung pretty directly. I historically had better luck with Western Digital HDDs compared to many others, so decided to try their SSD and see how it stacks up. AS SSD Benchmark results are: Sequential Read/Write 2730MBs/2256MBs 4K Read/Write 48MBs/156MBs 4K-64Thrd Read/Write 1477MBs/2003MB/s Scores: Read/Write 1798/2385/5082 I'm using it as an OS & Apps drive and am quite satisfied with the speed. My system is ASUS TUF Z490 mobo, Intel i9 10850k, RAM 2x16gb 3200mhz DDR4 dual channel/dual rank. Early impressions are that I think it is comparable to Samsung Evo for, on the day I bought it, definitely enough cheaper to entice me over. So far, so good and looking like quite a decent value. Time will tell what its life cycle is like. ... show more
