I bought this to use as my Time Machine backup drive for my MacBook Pro, and it’s been exactly what I needed. It was easy to set up, works well with the Mac, and gives me plenty of space for regular backups without having to think about it too much. That’s really what I wanted from it. Plug it in, let Time Machine do its thing, and know I’ve got a proper backup if anything goes wrong. It’s also compact enough that it doesn’t take up much room on the desk or feel like some big external drive hanging off the laptop. I also like that it doesn’t need a separate power source, so there’s no extra power brick or cable to deal with. It’s not the fastest thing in the world compared to an SSD, but for Time Machine backups it doesn’t need to be. I dumped YEARS of photos, videos, school/work files, and creator chaos onto it, and it still has plenty of room left. The size is perfect for travel, the build feels solid, and it looks clean sitting next to a MacBook instead of some clunky hard drive from 2012. If you’re constantly out of storage, editing content, taking way too many pics, or juggling life on your laptop, this thing restores your sanity.     • The disk space setting needs to be updated manually first. I almost thought it unusable.
This Western Digital external drive seems to work as well as its Seagate competitor, however, the disk space needs to be manually updated right out of the box. I thought it was going to be unusable until I found tech support for it on Amazon which lent steering for the disk space update resolution. If I hadn't found the tech support I would have found this drive inoperable, and unreturnable as the return window had closed. Also I had to modify the instruction from tech support somewhat to configure the disk space, but at least the tech support instructions explained how to make the disk drive operable. ... show more

    • WD passport for MAC
I purchased this WD passport for my MAC on January 6th. By the end if February the drive suddenly was not mounting to my desktop. Once I researched, I discovered disk utilities. I am not tech savvy. I tried different things before contacting WD passport customer service. Once I contacted them, I was told that the drive was no longer compatible with the Mac OS 11.2.1. I was told to backup the drive and reformat to AFPS. I tried to back the drive up and it kept failing. So, I decided to erase the drive and reformat without backing it up. This also failed. I contacted the WD Passport customer service again for the second time. The guy tried to walk me through the process. I downloaded WD Drive Utilities and went through everything with him. It failed. He told me I needed to buy a new cable and try the process again. I insisted on them replacing the drive. He told me I had to check the return window for Amazon and of course the return window had ended. He agreed to replace the drive. However, I have to send the drive back and then, 5 to 7 days after receiving the drive they will send out a replacement. I am glad they are replacing it. However, the process is very frustrating. I bought this drive because it was the WD passport for MAC. How does it suddenly become incompatible and then you have to backup everything? Not an easy process when you have 5TB drive. Secondly, how does the drive become faulty in a month. Thirdly, why do I have to send the faulty drive back before they replace the drive? I am using the drive for YouTube. My hands are tied for storage for at least 2 weeks. Not very happy with this product to say the least. ... show more
