  • Works as Advertised
Capacity: 500GB Color: Gray
Despite the reviews that indicated installation or usage problems, I plugged this unit in and it worked flawlessly. The speed was impressive and I had no issues at all. Maybe I'm just lucky, but isn't this how it's supposed to work?

  • The best external drive to date
Capacity: 1TB Color: Gold
Not only is it cute and gold, it’s compact and light for traveling. It’s been a life saver transferring large datasets quickly. It’s about 4x as fast as my older WD external drive or my new desktop external drive that connects by USB. The adaptor to a USB is easy to lose, but it works great with my smaller port hub, so no big deal. ... show more

  • Great little external drive
Capacity: 2TB Color: Gray
I’m very happy I chose this model. A friend actually suggested it, he had one. Works perfect for what I needed it for. It does get warm, I was worried about that, but I would not consider it excessive.

  • WD SSD software is really broken
Capacity: 500GB Color: Gray
I purchased the WD 500GB "My Passport SSD" external portable drive so that I can quickly backup my laptop with encryption. I am extremely disappointed because, like the reviewer George D. (above) indicates, the software either does not detect the SSD drive or doesn't work properly when it does (many details below). I have used "WD Sync" on external USB drives in the past and was very pleased with the all-in-one user interface and how reliable the software was. However, at this point, I have zero confidence in Western Digital's product. Needless to say, I will be returning this drive and no longer consider Western Digital as an option going forward. Why so negative? Because even if Western Digital fixed the drive detection issues, how can I be confident that the encryption and backup/restore software is reliable? As other reviewers have also noted, the SSD drive becomes fairly warm to the touch, even when just left plugged-into my laptop with no I/O going to/from the drive. I wonder how warm it would become if I backed-up 32GB of data? Here's some details on the WD software and failures I encountered: WD Drive Utilities: - Version 2.0.0.71 installs from the main user interface named WD Discovery. When run, the window just indicates "Attach a supported WD drive.", meaning the SSD drive was not detected. - Version 2.0.0.76 installed from support.wdc.com. This newer version detects the SSD drive and shows "My Passport SSD" with the correct drive size and buttons to run three utilities. (1) Drive Status Check utility returns "SMART status passed." (2) Quick Drive Test utility runs for longer than the two minutes indicated, with a -1% completion status until it fails with "Quick Drive Test Failed." (3) Complete Drive Test utility runs for some amount of time, with a -1% completion status until it fails with "Complete Drive Test Failed". No further information supplied as to why these utility tests failed, so not very informative. WD Backup: Version 1.9.7435.38388 installs from WD Discovery. When run, there is a spinning indicator that it is attempting to discover connected drives, however, the SSD drive is never detected and the only place to perform a backup would be to the Dropbox cloud. I want a hard drive backup not a cloud service, thank-you. There is no more recent version provided from support.wdc.com. WD Security: Version 2.0.0.76 installs from WD Discovery. When run, detects the SSD drive and shows "My Passport SSD" with the correct drive size and some toggle controls and text boxes to set and/or remove a drive password. Setting a password also enables drive encryption, but this is not indicated on the main window; you have to click the Help link to find this out. I was able to set and remove a password. However, at this point with my confidence shaken I can't be sure the encryption would work. There is no more recent version provided from support.wdc.com. I would have given a 1 star review rating, however, I wanted my review to be included with the only other very recent reviewer that I could find that had similar problems with the software not discovering the SSD drive and also include the details of what I encountered. I do like that the drive is very small and that a USB-C cable (albeit short) and USB-A adapter was included. However, there was no User Manual included, only a simple connection diagram on a sheet containing extremely long disclaimers and legalese in many different languages. This was really not helpful and the online help offered only a bit more help. I don't like that the software has been separated into four different applications instead of a single application, but that's just a personal preference. The real issue is that I bought this drive for the backup and encryption; the SSD speed and reliability over HDD with mechanical platters and moving heads. I'm just not sold on Western Digital's implementation and that's a huge let down for me. Now I'll have to do more research on other drive manufacturers that offer backup/encryption solutions. ... show more

  • Gets hotter than hades, can't register it, but it rips!
Capacity: 2TB Color: Silver
First, this drive runs H-O-T. 130F H-O-T. Even when it's just sitting there doing nothing. 130F is scalding hot, so if you have curious little hands in your home, make sure you keep this drive inaccessible to those hands if you plan to leave it plugged in full time. I submitted a support request to ask if this was normal, but never got a response even though I was told my request was "escalated". Like others have mentioned, I was also unable to register my drive with Western Digital. The registration page displayed the very unhelpful message, "No results found", whatever the heck that means. But, being a software engineer by trade, I used the Firefox Developer Tools (F12) to view the actual HTTP request and response. The response was a JSON object that contained the message, "Invalid Serial or Model Number", followed by my serial number. So, the registration system has not been properly setup by Western Digital with the serial numbers of the My Passport SSD drives they've been selling. I submitted a support request for this with all of the detailed information mentioned above, including multiple screenshots, and all I got back from Western Digital support was that my problem has been "escalated". I'm still waiting for a response. And this was the second time I'd submitted a support request for this registration problem. On the first request I was told by a support rep that he'd register the drive for me. He never did and this request was closed. Western Digital's support, in a word, stinks. But, all that aside, this drive RIPS! I use it to store my Acronis backups. I had been using a WD My Passport Ultra 4 TB HDD. A full backup to this drive took 16 TO 20 HOURS to backup 850 GB. Using the My Passport SSD, this same backup finishes in LESS THAN AN HOUR!!! Because my old My Passport Ultra took so long to do a full backup, I had submitted a support request to WD. Any guesses what happened there? Just like my other support requests, I never got an answer. My request was "escalated" and then closed without me getting a solution or even an explanation or even an email back from WD support. Like I said before, Western Digital's support, in a word, stinks. Nevertheless, I'm happy with the faster backups, but in the future I think I'll look to another brand in the hopes that whatever brand I switch to has better support than WD. They couldn't be any worse! ... show more

  • Small outside, big inside, and easy
Capacity: 4TB Color: Gray
I bought 2 of them because I needed one for a Time Machine backup for my MacBook and the other to hold a ton of media files. They're 4TB solid-state (no more spinning disk) and I can't believe how small these things are! They use USB-C and come with a short USB-C to USB-C cable, and also a USC-C-to-USB (regular) adapter, which is handy. Was plug-and-play with my MacBook Pro and my MacBook Air. No need to reformat or anything. Small downside is I noticed mine getting a bit hot after a while. Other than that, I'm super happy with these things. ... show more

Easy to use and fast. I cannot afford to lose my information so I back up my PC weekly. I have an earlier version of the device and liked it so much, I purchased another for my other PCs.
