16,000 hours in (almost 2 years) on 2 of these drives, in a server case with 6 other drives, no vibration protection at all, over 11,000 head flying hours, and these things are still going strong. My only regret with them is when I bought them on sale, I only bought 2. They ARE noisy but absolutely worth getting. Do not be scared by the renewed label. btw these guys are scanned every other day or so, including a full surface scan weekly. Its not a fluke, they really are working well. ... show more

Evidently, Water Panther is an outfit that refurbishes WD and Seagate HDDs (maybe others) and sells them under its own name. Not a big deal: you'll see right away what you received, but it's a grab bag. They use Amazon as an ordering mechanism only. Orders are not fulfilled by Amazon (FBA), rather are shipped out by Water Panther. I ordered an 18TB that turned out to be a Seagate Exos. SMART test results were acceptable, and showed only 25 hours of use, but refurbished HDDs are always a crap shoot. We'll see. I had the drive shipped to my address in Mexico. The tracker noted a delay at customs and when the drive arrived, UPS needed about forty U.S. dollars COD, for the import duty. This substantially affected the net cost of the drive, and I might not have purchased had I known. So if you're shipping to outside the U.S., note carefully that additional tax may be due upon delivery. Direct Amazon shipments and FBA shipments always include estimated import tax. Update: Water Panther was kind enough to refund the shipping charge on my order, mostly offsetting the import duty. They did it without my asking and before this review posted.     • Was uncertain about "renewed" but have had no issues at all
(Update: have now purchased 1 18tb and 1 20tb and both performed well for long-term storage backups, not used daily.) Original review: Wasn't recognized on my Mac initially (this is normal and expected) then I partitioned this 18TB drive into 4 "drives" using Disk Utility so I can run backups of my entire system (with 4 disks connected) onto one disk and easily store that single disk off-site. Disk Utility crashed while I was attempting to partition the first time but I don't think that was the fault of this drive. It partitioned successfully on the 2nd attempt and I've run two backups now, with zero problems. I would purchase again at this price point. I'm not a tech guru but running this drive from a "toaster"-style drive holder, connected to a MacBook Air via that cord with a lightning bolt on it (at both ends), I was seeing copy speeds of around 150-400MB/s (usually at that lower end) though it goes up and down for reasons I don't comprehend. ... show more

    • DOA Drive **UPDATE** Not DOA
18TB drive I purchased is not recognized by PC, not in BIOS or Windows either one. Tried multiple cables, multiple SATA ports, several different SATA power cables--none of them worked. I've purchased multiple refurbished drives over the last several years and they all last just as long as the brand new ones I have alongside them--this one just happened to be DOA. The seller was pleasant to deal with for the return, which is why the product received 3 stars instead of 1 from me. ***UPDATE TO THE ABOVE*** Right before sending this back I tried it in my old PC (instead of the new one I just built) and it shows up just fine. Judging from the reviews there are a ton of people that have issues with the drives not showing up. After a week of frustrations and a bunch of research, I discovered the issue. Basically, some drives (particularly those pulled out of external enclosures) have a different 3rd pin on the SATA power connector that's meant to be used as a remote shut-off. Many if not most PSUs use that pin as a normal SATA connection would--supplying 3.3v to it. When you use one of these drives with one of these PSUs, the voltage being sent to that pin is continually telling it to shut off. There are several workarounds, but the easiest is to just use a molex to SATA power adapter. Not a perfect fix if you plan on using a whole bunch of drives or don't have a molex connection on your PSU. Leaving the review as 3 stars though, because this issue means that likely these drives were pulled out of (or at least built specifically for) external enclosures and weren't meant to be purchased as a lone internal drive. Because of that, they have an incompatibility with some PSUs, and none of this is mentioned in the item description, and the 2 people I spoke to when setting up a return due to it being DOA (or so I thought) had no clue about this either. ... show more

    • Very good value for a lot of storage capacity, but you have to do some configuration on Windows.
I'm very happy with the drive and I liked the 90-day warranty period (and low price) for a "refurbished" drive. I've done a good bit of informal stress testing, and there have been no problems. Transfer speeds are as expected (around 250+ MB/sec max, sustained speeds, with many bursts over 300MB/sec - measured when no other processes using the disk, so very little seeking on the drive). I'm Going from this drive to an SDD drive and using a USB C interface to the drive (USB B speeds are much lower.) Note/Tip: Windows does not handle this large a drive in default mode; when you install it Windows creates two partitions. Work-around is to use "GPR" disk type; this used the entire disk as one Windows partition. I configured the drive in Windows for "Better Performance" in Disk Management, so I have to remember to "close" the device cleanly but it's worth it for the significant boost in performance. Use a USB-C 3.2 cable for best performance, but any USB-C version is better than USB-B. ... show more

The drive works fine and it was cheap enough, but it makes noise - a lot of noise. If I had known how loud it was, I'd have chosen something else.

    • Received Exos X18 with Water Panther stamp
This drive arrived with a QR code stamp in the upper left corner of the drive, but otherwise it is a genuine (from what I can tell) Exos X18 drive. I was even able to upgrade it's firmware from SN02 to SN04 (latest) successfully. Don't know if all these drives arrive this way, but very satisfied with this result. ... show more
