I'm not sure why these are so highly rated, they are over priced cheap pieces of felt. The only thing making this a pre-filter is that it's stitched in the cylindrical shape of the filter. A pre filter for a carbon filter is supposed to grab all the big trash and dust from the air before it hits your carbon and prematurely clogs the carbon. Compared to the old style which is like what all major brands of carbon filters use, thick matted nylon fiber pads this thing is abjoke being just a single layer of cheap felt that gets packed full of dust and dirt within weeks of intermittent use. I also don't feel that it's filtering as much dust and dirt out as the old one did, and kind of has been shown in the ability of the filter to remove smells being greatly diminished shortly after installing this. I feel like this has done such a poor job prefiltering that my carbon has now been clogged up and now won't remove smells as good taking it roughly 5-6 times longer to get rid of a smell than it did just before installing this. This is not being used in a grow room and is not running 24/7 so its performance for me seems to be exceptionally low, while carrying a hefty price for such a cheap alternative to the original design.

This is a direct replacement for the prefilter we get when buying the charcoal filter. Since I wash them monthly…to extend the life of the filter…I go a few of these in a 9-12 month life of the filter. From the repeated washings, they lose their density and get thin, that’s when I replace them. I get about six washings out of one filter on the gentle cycle in my washing machine.
