Description
Throw out your scoop and save time with our Van Ness sifting pan. This smartly designed unit features two nesting pans and a sifting screen. Stack the pans with the sifting screen on top and fill with clumping litter. When you lift the sifting screen the litter sifts out into the pan, leaving the clumps that you throw away. Replace the sifting screen in the empty pan, move the litter from the full to the empty pan, restack, and your are finished. Made of durable, easy to clean plastic.

I am trying to transition my cats to pine litter pellets from clay litter. I had been considering the All Pine Litter Box but was hesitant to buy it because it's somewhat expensive and I don't yet know if I can get my cats to switch. This seemed like a good compromise because it's at least $10 cheaper and because at least one review says it's good with pine litter. So far, I would not agree -- the Petco SoPhresh pellets I have are mostly stuck in the holes. Perhaps a different brand would work better? Update, February 2018: I have since tried both crystal and okocat litters in this box. I didn’t like it with the crystal, but the okocat works pretty well as long as I keep a good amount of it in the box. When it gets low, it can get really clumped up around the sifter and it’s difficult to remove. Update, September 2020: I am still using this litterbox, currently with clay clumping litter. After my last update I read the other reviews and followed the advice to keep the sifting tray in the middle. For some reason I thought the enclosure would only attach to the sifting tray, but I was wrong about that. Anyway, keeping it in the middle is the key to this being a great litterbox. My only complaint is that it is a little small for larger cats.

There is serious clarification needed with this product. 1) If you are going to sell a product you should really make sure that the instructions are correct. (This product lost one star because no one looked to make sure the directions were accurate.) a. there is no reason to have 2 pans if the sifter is going to go on top... duh. b. the reason you don't put the filter on top is that if the animal pees on to the litter that is directly on the sifter than the sifter is no good because now the chunks have hardened on to the sifter. The correct way for this product to work best from bottom to top is PAN, SIFTER, PAN, LID. Take the lid off, pour the first pan into the sifter, pull up the sifter, and let the clean litter fall into the clean pan. Clean the first litter box out as needed, place the sifter on that pan and the new litter pan on top of the sifter before replacing the lid. 2.) This product isn't for everyone. For people who have one or two cats, this litter box is probably pointless because it takes you just as much time to clean this product as it does to clean a regular litter box. No, this product is for those people who have one or two cats shy of being referred to as crazy cat people. Those people who have 3 or more litter boxes that after you have scooped them all the cats have already started using the first or second ones you have already scooped and by the time you get up your back, knees, and nose all hate you. If I just described you then this product is the one you want. You will still need one to replace every one that you have now but they aren't that expensive and well worth it. It will take you a quarter of the time, and you'll never have to kneel down again. 3.) This product works great with a great litter. There is a product out there called arm & hammer slide. If anyone has used it you know that it slips right out of the pan. So basically you put the litter from the pan into the sifter, sift it, minimal clean up on the pan and put it back together and you're done. I have 5 of these litterboxes. What used to take me 30 minutes to clean litter boxes now takes me 5. I don't waste as much litter, and therefore also don't have as much trash. For someone who fosters on a regular basis and has cats of their own this is an awesome product, especially since most foster parents don't have the kind of money to buy those automatic cleaning litter boxes.

There are mostly good things to say about this product, but one huge negative that made me rate 3 stars instead of 5. I used to have two big litter boxes, one jump in and walk in, the litter had to be pretty deep for those to work, which was a pain when scooping and changing the litter. My husband and I switched to these thinking the sifting feature would make our lives alot easier. And it does to an extend. One thing we don't have to worry about now is scooping all of the litter to find the clumps. The HUGE negative is that when our cats use it, the urine goes through the grates, and it clumps around the sifter and is damn near impossible to get off. We have tried increasing the amount of litter in the boxes and we have tried scooping first and then sifting, but the litter still clumps around the grates and it is just awful to try and clean. We have to bang on the sifter part to make any headway. And I mean bang, it's loud and sounds like we're going to break the sifter. We have only been able to clear it but completely removing it and hosing it off when we need to. Despite this, we do still use it, but I think it's more for the shallowness, and not the sifter use. Honestly, if you're getting it for sifting, I'd pair it with something else or just pass on it.

I would give this a perfect score, because I love it that much. It takes under a minute to _completely_ change the litter box. Two things I wish I had known before I bought it: (although I WOULD still buy it again) 1) This is the perfect solution if you use a litter that clumps (be it clay or a ground corn cob-based one) you lift the top layer, the unused litter is sifted through and only the clumps and solid waste is left in the top. You dump it, clean it, you're done. BUT- 2) If you use a pine pellet type litter- the pellets are the same size as the spaces in the sifter pan. One of my cats is a BIG tom cat, and he's heavy enough to push the pellets down into the spaces in the sifter pan, and i frequently have to use the scoop to push them on through. Is this complicated? No. it takes about 2 minutes- but had I known this, I would have looked for a sifter pan with smaller holes in it so the pellets didn't get lodged. That said- the only litter left in the top box if you use the Feline Pine or other pellet litter is solid waste or totally unused pellets. Pick out the solid, shake it a few times and the pellets which absorbed urine have turned to sawdust and fall through the sifter pan. Still a million times better than digging through clay with a scoop, or trying to dislodge clumped clay from a corner if 2 cats used the box in the same area within a few minutes. We had this style of box about a decade ago- and my husband loved it. I currently have a second one sitting in my cart to order, because he wants to make sure that when this one goes, the replacement for it is already here. =)

If you bought these pans and they won't sit all the way together, it's because you have one backward. I figured this out with the sifting pan when I was trying to put it together, and with the solid pans when I had cleaned it for the first time. Also, we're using this pan with wood pellets and, at first, it looks like all the pellets just get stuck in the holes, but it actually works right. The pellets dissolve a little when they get wet, and they fall through the holes. True, your cats can't cover their poos, but if you're scooping out the poos daily, there's no smell with the wood pellets unless they just dropped a fresh poo. It looks like this pan isn't great with clumping litter, but once we're done with our current batch I'm switching 100% to pellets anyway. Better smell, no little clay grains all over my wood floors (imagine if it was carpet--ew!!) and cheaper at the farm supply store. Win-win-win. We will be buying a second one of these to retire our old cat pan once the container of clay litter is done.

What a disgusting mess. I first bought this to mod for pellets, figuring if that didn't work, I could fall back to clumping. And no, that absolutely didn't work. Took hours to make it stable enough for them to walk on. The whole thing is flimsy and bowed and if you try to mod, you will curse your existence. However, I finally succeeded and was proud of utilizing binder clips. Then I opened the bag of Feline Pine. As soon as I smelled it, I was transported to State Fair. The stench is rabbit hutch, guinea pig, goat feed and barn. My entire house smelled like a petting zoo. Oh yeah, and the pellets are huge. Looking at them reminded me of walking barefoot over gravel. AnOf course the cats looked at me as if I was insane and refused to use it. Ok, plan one fails. I'll remove the mod and use as intended. Dumped the pellets, filled it with clumping clay. Worst mess ever. The sifter filled with urine scented mortar. Impossible to clean unless taken outside and hosed off. Whatever route you go, make sure you have a backup of your regular litter. I didn't. I wept. Then I pulled myself together and ordered more crystal litter delivered within hours. Sure my house is covered in white dust. Sure my bare feet are breaded in litter if I don't vacuum every 3 days. Yup I've totally brushed it off my sheets, couch, blankets - heck, I've picked out of my headphones, showered it out of my hair. It's still better than pellets, sifters or anything else I've found. It's expensive and a nuisance. Yet still much better than the alternatives. I'm done trying to save money. Some things are worth it.
