  • Buyer Beware! Awful! Snapped while driving and all of our bikes destroyed.
Style: 5 Bike
We used this exactly as described. In fact, had much less weight on it then suggested. It snapped and broke for no reason. No bumps on the road. It was not overloaded. It's a 5 bike apparatus. We had 4 on there, two of which were child bikes. This is very poor quality. The worst part, we have reached out to the company repeatedly and are receiving no response. ... show more

  • Nice features but with a couple flaws
Style: 5 Bike
I own a Yakima HoldUp 2 + 2-bike extender, and although I like that product, it is VERY heavy to set up and put away. I had always wanted to get a 4-person bike carrier that would not break my back, and when the opportunity to try out the Thule Apex XT 5-bike rack came, I was excited. PROS - Installation guide was generally clear to follow - MUCH lighter than the Yakima HoldUp 2, and ESPECIALLY lighter when you also factor in the Yakima 2-bike extender - Easy to load - Integrated cable lock - Works with both 1.25" and 2" hitch receiver via an ingenious, knob-based mechanism (which also helps minimize swaying) - Tilts down for access to the car's trunk - Straps to hold the bikes horizontally and vertically for better stability and less swaying - Padding to protect bikes from getting scratched where the straps are - Buckle strap included to additionally secure bikes to help minimize swaying - Professional look - 2 replaceable locks and keys included CONS - Takes a bit longer to load/unload than the Yakima HoldUp - Does not accept a wide variety of bike types like the Yakima HoldUp's tray style (requires bike adaptors for Y-frame/women bikes, for example) - Replaceable locks print the key number on the FRONT and makes it VERY easy for a thief to know which key would unlock. Yakima hides the key number on the side of the lock (so you can only see it if you remove the lock from its housing) - For RV's, look into the Thule Range rack, not the Apex series TIPS - The knob mechanism that tightens the rack within the hitch (to minimize swaying) can be a bit confusing for some to use. Namely, when you put the key in to unlock the knob, you can turn the knob to tighten or loosen the rack to/from the hitch. However, what you may not realize (like I did at first), while you have the key in the lock, it may inadvertently turn into the lock position because your key chain may have exerted enough weight to rotate the key while you're turning the knob. This baffled me at times because I could not understand why I was unable to tighten the knob further, or I was able to loosen the rack while thinking the knob was in the LOCKED position. If this description above doesn't make sense to you, IN SHORT: check your key unlock position while turning the knob as it may inadvertently rotate into lock, or vice versa. (When the knob is locked, it can be turned, but the rack will not loosen/tighten so it cannot be stolen. In unlocked position, you can feel the knob becoming increasingly harder to tighten as its grip strengthens within the hitch.) - The knob mechanism to tighten/loosen the rack within the hitch must be checked every few hours or miles (according to the manual, 200 mi, if I remember correctly) to ensure it is not loose. Thule says that this is just a safety precaution, but it's just another thing to remember checking when you are on a road trip. - It should be noted that this Apex rack (rack mount) is NOT the same style as the Yakima HoldUp (tray mount), and as such this comparison may be a bit unfair. It is like comparing Apples to Oranges -- two different products. However, those are the two products I am able to share my experience from, and giving you Pros and Cons of both styles will hopefully help you make a better informed decision on which style works best for YOU. Overall, the knob mechanism is designed to make it easier to connect/disconnect the rack to/from the hitch, makes it versatile to use with 1.25" and 2" hitches, and helps prevent sway -- but that convenience could come at the cost of potentially having the rack fall out of the hitch when it is not checked every so often while on a long road trip. • many pros, but a few frustrating, cons
Style: 4 Bike
LIKE: 1) like the ease of placing it on my hitch 2) swaying mechanism to access trunk - very easy and seems to be sturdy 3) locks: hitch lock and bike lock 4) stable - no swaying when mounted and fully loaded 5) seemingly a good quality (time will tell) DISLIKE: 1) fixed (screwed on fixed) positions of bike holders - no way to move them around to address different configurations. By screwing them on THULE is addressing the previous model issues where they slid across the rack during the drive. I expect such solution from my local carpenter, but from a reputable company I expected more. 2) straps that secure biked to bike holders. #THULE really dropped the ball hon these straps . - Straps are not that flexible (they are more plastic-ky than rubbery) making sliding the bike across straps a big hassle as they are on the way (perhaps THULE expect us to remove straps completely every time and only place them when the bikes are on ,but that would take time and it would likely result in lost straps. - To secure the straps across bike frame is very easy. But., to unlock the straps to remove the bike - phew, it is hard and it takes multiple tries. Perhaps it will get easier with time, but I doubt it as it is evident that design is flawed : to push the strap locking mechanism to unlock one has to secure the strap from moving bu the strap easily spins as it slides across bike's metal. Three hands are needed. BOTTOM LINE: I am thinking about returning it. They over-complicated the strapping mechanism. resulting in frustration. When I want to go biking I want my bikes on and off in quickly- -not to spend 10 minutes unloading them . The previous version had bike holders sliding but the straps were easier to use (my neighbor has it) . I also have have a cheapo ugly looking Bell bike hitch rack ( worse quality than Allen that can be found on Amazon ) but it still works. and it is much easier to mount/dismount your bikes . I can't use it anymore as it sways to much when driving. Oh well, I didn't know that hitch mounted bike rack is so difficult to perfect. For the money paid I am rating it 3.5 stars. If I decide to keep it and straps get easier or something changes I will give an update. ... show more
