  • Decent budget rack
Style: Rack
One should expect this to not be as tight and wobble free as a more expensive rack. I’ve had it for a few months and it has worked well for me for carrying a single bike. I use a ratchet strap, using the holes at the bottom of the piece that comes up with the hook, to hold my bike down a bit more. That significantly tightened things up. One thing I also did was replace most of the pins with nuts/bolts. That removed a lot of play. It’s a cheap rack that will get some help from a few mods. It works on my Jeep Wrangler TJ with a standard spare tire, without the need for an extender. ... show more

  • Important to know before purchase
Style: Rack
I ordered this bike rack and put it together. One of the horizontal bars must have been slightly bigger as the supports that the bike sits on would not slide on. I took the ones off the other side that had gone on no problem to check and they would not fit on it either. Had to send it back. Amazon was great with the exchange and the replacement arrived the next day. Put it together with no problem in about 10 minutes. I then placed it on my car hitch and that's when I discovered the issue. The rack comes with directions and a large paper telling you that if the tires of your bike are in line with your vehicles exhaust that it could damage the tire and rim and a hitch riser would be required. Unfortunately that is exactly what happened with my vehicle. The tire of one bike was exactly in line with the exhaust pipe. The Maxxhaul hitch riser was the least expensive riser on Amazon at $45, with other being much more. So that was an unexpected additional cost. The bike rack with tax was $106.49 and this would increase it to over $150, which defeated the purpose of purchasing this particular rack in the first place, and I decided to return the rack. I was disappointed as the rack is built nicely and was easy to place the bikes on. It rides low so it's important to take into account that a riser will most likely be required. It would be nice if there was a heat shield offered to put on the support. I considered making one or purchasing one for a motorcycle, but decided I didn't want to mess with it. For reference my vehicle is a 2020 Hyundai Sante Fe. ... show more

  • Pleased, but with caveats
Style: Rack
Overall, this is a good bike carrier for the money, and was very cost driven to purchase it. Out of the box I felt it was pretty wobbly. I did not need the tilt feature, so I replaced the clip pins with bolts and lock nuts, and also replaced the clip pins on the horizontal arms with bolts and lock nuts. It made the whole thing much less wobbly. One nice feature is that it comes with a hitch stabilizer, and that also makes a lot if difference. I also drilled a 3/8 inch hole right at the top of the horizontal bar and installed an eye bolt so that I could run a tie-down through the eye bolt, under the bikes, and then tighten and fasten. With this setup, I just don't see how a bike could fall off very easily. So, with these modifications, i am very satisfied with how it works. Have used it several times on 30 to 40 mile trips without any issues. One final note, our bikes are Electra Townie 7Ds, which are designed a bit differently from a normal bike. So I made some wooden adapters that help in holding the clamps to the bike frames securely. This wouldn't be necessary for most bikes. So, all in all, it works great for me! ... show more

  • Great value for the $ ** May require modification to prevent exhaust frying bike tire **
Style: Rack
I've used a home-made rack for 20 years but it required removing the front bike tire, which has become a chore. So I looked at the myriads of racks which don't require removing a tire, from $ to $$$$. The high-buck racks were WAY out of my pocketbook range so I concentrated on the low-end racks and decided to give this one a shot, and I'm quite happy with it. Sure it isn't perfect but with a bit of mods it suits my needs very well. * PROS: - Great buy for the money - Easy to assemble/disassemble - Easy to install/remove from vehicle - Easy to mount/dismount bike - Reasonably lightweight - Sturdy when bike is clamped TIGHT - Clamp provided to prevent hitch wobble (see photos for my fix) * CONS: - No locking mechanism - Tilt mechanism wobbles (see photos for my fix) - Depending on your vehicle the exhaust from tailpipe likely to heat tires unacceptably... (see photos for my fix) When I was removing my bike after a 10 mile drive I almost burned my hand when I bumped up against the metal rail, which is when I realized the rack was just above being in-line with the exhaust. Back home after the ride I checked the temperature of the bike tire and metal bar and they were 175° & 190°! Since the rack was too far out from the vehicle for my taste (Toyota 4Runner), I got the idea to cut the center bar and overlap it, in effect shortening it 4" and raising it 2". I bolted it together first to make sure it did what I wanted, and now that it works I will weld it together permanently. About the exhaust heating tires and rack bar issue... I would guess a LOT of people never realize this could be an issue (I never did because my custom rack was much higher) but it is worth checking the relationship between exhaust stream and bar/tire height before driving along distance, only to have a melted/deteriorated tire. I don't fault the rack at all for no locking mechanism because I never leave the bike unattended on the rack, it's always home to biking and back to home. If it HAD a locking mechanism it would cost more, which would reduce the value per $. (I do have a means to lock the wherever there is a removable pin so I actually CAN lock the bike to the rack while preventing rack disassembly as well, but again, I never leave it unattended so I don't bother.) I use other means to prevent hitch wobble (see photos for my fix) so I used the provided clamp to prevent wobble from the tilt mechanism instead, as it was more than I expected. Sure I won't be able to tilt the rack but the trade-off for no wobble AT ALL was worth giving up the tilt, which I won't use anyway. NOTE: Plan on taking extra time to figure out exactly where you want to clamp the tire baskets. I'd recommend facing the bike(s) with the chain on the OPPOSITE side from the rack so the knob doesn't interfere with the any part of the bike. Overall, knowing what I know now, I would buy this rack again and would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to keep the cost under $100. ... show more

  • Mountain bike rack
Style: Rack
This rack is good, but not very sturdy. If you buy an extra clamp, you can make it a lot more sturdy. It's fairly easy to install and after you've done it a couple times it's easy. A good value for the price point.
