  • Great price for a sturdy, no frills product.
O.k. - straight up; this is VERY inexpensive for 2 kayak racks. it's not going to have extensive padding or any bells and whistles. However, this is a very well built set of racks for that price. The assembly is easy and the parts fit together with the minimum of fuss. I have no clue what is confusing people about the assembly process. Yes; there is only an exploded schematic to guide you through assembly, but if you have ever assembled a blender you should do fine lol. The carriers where not a perfect fit for my 2018 Honda CRV with factory rack and rails, but fit tightly, securely, and with plenty of clearance to work the bolts and adjust the spacing. The padding will probably not last that long, but if you have access to a dollar store with pool noodles that shouldn't be a deal breaker. First trip was 189 miles each way at highway speeds (65-80 mph). Checked the racks at 20 and 90 miles and they were as secure as the day was long. Use ratchet straps in place of the provided straps to secure the kayak and use the ones provided as Bow lines back to the carrier, since I would think a more secure connection is optimal. One 15 foot ratchet strap allows a figure eight around the set for me. Don't be a gorilla cranking down the ratchet strap(s) - obviously. Remember...it's a kayak, not a chest of drawers. Very pleased - friends buying them also after taking a look. ... show more

  • These are well worth the money and very sturdy but get different straps.
These work great on my 2003 4 door blazer. It fits. The kayaks that we have are an Ascend FS10 and a Future Beach Fusion 10. It was easy to assemble. Some people say that it's hard. Don't let them scare you. If you can build a small legos set for kids ages 10+ then you'll have the mechanical prowess to put these together and install them on your car. Times for everything assuming you are using all four J-bars for two kayaks and only one person doing the labor: -First time assembly and installation to the roof: 1 hour -Loading two kayaks first time: 30 minutes (to figure out how you wanna strap them) -Unloading two kayaks: 5 minutes -Re-loading two kayaks: 10 minutes -Removing the J-bars from the rack: 10 minutes -Reinstalling the J-bars to the rack: 10 minutes They don't require full disassembly to be removed from the roof which is why removal and re-installation is so fast. They are extremely sturdy. I loaded and strapped down my kayaks and then shook the kayaks and watched the crossbars of my roof bend up and down. There was ZERO play in the kayak and the J-bars. Now for the bad: I didn't trust the cam straps. I loaded the kayaks, strapped them in, and then shook the kayaks and was able to pull the straps loose. Considering how much more expensive brand name J-hooks are versus how cheap reliable straps are, I can't in good conscious knock a star off. This is still a 5/5 star product for the money, but you need to order better straps. I use cheap tow strap that I had lying around in my garage but I don't recommend those since people warn that tow straps can warp plastic kayaks. I've used tow straps the past few outings but this season I plan on investing $15 into a better set of cam straps. EDIT TO ADD LINK TO REPLACEMENT STRAPS: I replaced the straps that came with this product with these. I was able to carry my kayak on a 4 hour trip averaging a speed of 60 mph to 70 mph, using these J-bars and those cam straps. I left my review of those. They are a 5/5 product. • Inexpensive & Reliable
It's been over 5 years since we bought these racks, and they've worked great; although they were 50% cheaper when I bought them. They are easy to mount and have been perfectly stable during our use (and they do get a lot of use!) They have a couple of minor issues, but everything does. On strapping down your boats: They come with straps that some here say work great - I wouldn't know I never used them, but whatever you use, keep this in mind: the boats will become torpedoes if you get in a collision. The impact will flex your boats and they WILL fly out of whatever strap you have across it. The only solution is to tie them front to back as well. I hate having ropes come down over the windshield, so I tie each end back to the roof rack itself which does the same thing more compactly. I also use ratchet straps across the tops to hold 2 boats down, but each boat also needs to be independently tied down! Notice, I don't tie the boats to the racks, but to the roof mounts on the car. This removes a lot of bounce stress on the arms and racks since the boats are not anchored to the roof which puts constant pressure down on the racks. This has worked perfectly for numerous interstate trips of varying distances, including from VA to the FL Keys & back. Now, the bad news - on our Subaru Outback, the cross bars are a bit wider than the base of the mount so they don't sit straight. I typically cock them in the direction of the curve of the boat if I can. The hand crank heads that sit over the tightening nuts didn't work well. I ditched those and keep a ratchet wrench in the car and use that to tighten the racks to the roof crossbars. Lastly, one of the bolt posts has broken the plastic mold that keeps it from spinning when you tighten the nuts. I've milked it a few more times, but this means I need to replace the rack. I'll probably upgrade to a nicer rack now that I have a bit more money and bit less strength in my back to be hoisting my kayaks up on the roof. But all in all, I've been very happy with these racks. ... show more

  • Easy to install and figure out.
I was nervous about the reviews and such, but the assembly is simple, just make sure you have your own socket wrench to tighten the bolts, but I just have one Kayak for now I bought taller cross bars so the bolts have plenty of room to not touch my paint on the roof. I dont trust there straps they give you, so Im using rachet straps instead. But these are a great price for what they are and will work great! ... show more
