Stanbroil Lava Rocks will instantly give any fire pit an exotic, yet classy look. Naturally occurring, these Lava Rocks are formed as volcanic magma rises to the surface, cools and releases gases which gives these rocks their coarse surface. Because they are volcanic, they can withstand extremely high temperatures without sustaining any damage or crumbling. Our Lava Rocks may be used exclusively in a fireplace or fire pit or may be used as a base or filler for other ornaments such as fire glass or lite stones. Whichever way they are used, the resulting effect is truly fascinating. The best part is that they require no maintenance at all! Available in various sizes. Lava Rock Granules are often used in outdoor fire pits, fire bowls, fire tables and fireplaces. It can be used exclusively or with fire glass and gas logs. Lava rock is perfect for flower arrangements, vase fillers, walkways, water features, exposed aggregate flooring or walls, swimming pool areas and many other areas. Lava rock stone is perfect for providing the ideal living environment for your aquarium because it has beneficial denitrifying bacteria. This bacteria will improve your water quality by reproducing and then removing nitrates. The lava rock can also be used for outdoor bbq gas grill to retain the heat under the cooking surface. HOW MUCH YOU NEED? Diameter (A) x Diameter(A) x Rock Depth (B) / 24 = Lava Rock (lbs.) We recommend a minimum 2” of lava rock depth for most installations. For example, a 24" diameter fire pit at the recommended 2” of lava rock depth: 24 X 24 X 2 / 24 = 48 lbs. Width (A) x Fireplace Depth (B) x Rock Depth (C) / 19 = Lava Rock (lbs.) We recommend a minimum 2” of lava rock depth for most installations. For example, a 30" X 10" fire pit at the recommended 2” of lava rock depth: 30 X 10 X 2 / 19 = 31 lbs. Width (A) x Width (A) x rock Depth (B) / 19 = Lava Rock (lbs.) We recommend a minimum 2” of lava rock depth for most installations. For example, a 20" fire pit at the recommended 2” of lava rock depth: 20 X 20 X 2 / 19 = 42 lbs. (Front Width (A) + Back Width (B) )/2 x Fireplace Depth (C) x Rock Depth (D)/19 = Lava Rock (lbs.) Bought this for our 14”x14” patio fire pit table and was great but I feel like we needed a bit more, I bought the large lava rocks and they were easy to sort and worked great. I just ordered another bag with smaller sized lava rocks to fill in the gaps of the large rocks. I bought 60 pounds of rocks for my 30" gas fire pit and it was the perfect amount. 3x 10-pound bags of 1.2" - 2" rocks (these larger size went around the outside border to block the gap between the 30" gas fire pit pan and the paverstone walls. 3x 10-pound bags of 0.8" - 1.2" rocks (these smaller size filled in all the spaces and gave it a perfect finished look. I have a 30" drop-in fire pit pan with a 24" gas burner. The space between the pavers is about 32" in diameter so there's a 1" gap all the way around the pan. I needed larger 1.2"-2" rocks to plug that gap and then I laid all the smaller ones over the top. The smaller rocks had a brown tint to them compared to the black larger ones (I ordered black in both sizes btw) but it looks fine. ... show more

Rock is as advertised, except for the size. Ordered "0.8 inch to 1.2 inch", but the actual rocks were closer to 2 inch in size. I just replaced the smaller rock we had with this larger rock. Works fine.

Looks good in my gas fireplace, I just bought a similar color to what came with it and it complimented the other stones well. I like that they're a little bigger than the stones that came with it so it has contrasting sizes. Overall would recommend and buy again.

At least 25% of the bags were .25 or smaller, It was supposed to be minimum of .4. I should have went up one size, or at least gotten one bag of the larger for over the burner area. I had to pick through and find enough larger pieces to cover the burners so the holes weren't blocked.
