Description

The SportRack 3 Bike Strap Rack is a rear mounted bike carrier that allows you to take your bikes to your destination safely without scratching your car or bike. Compatible with most bike frames and sizes, this strap mounted bike rack can hold up to 3 bikes at once and will fit the hatch or trunk of most three, four, and five-door vehicles. The SportRack 3 Bike Strap Rack features soft rubber cradles and straps to ensure that the top tube and frame paint will not be scratched or dinger. This bike rack has six adjustable straps that attach the rack to your vehicles trunk of hatch securely. When you are not using this hanging style trunk bike rack it folds up flat for convenient storage. Rubber cradles and multiple straps secure the carrier and bikes to your vehicle. View larger The carrier utilizes a simple, but effective frame that is designed to be cinched snugly against the exterior of vehicles, holding it immobile. The frame is easily adjustable to the contours of compatible vehicles by way of a knob- based quick hub mounting system. When properly adjusted, the adjustment knobs are locked into place and four raised foam padded elements on the frame are pulled into direct contact with vehicle exteriors using six adjustable straps. This levels the the bike arms, creating a stable platform to hang bicycle from. The six straps are integrated into the carrier, and have hooks at their ends that attach to seams along trunks and hatchbacks without causing damage. The top tube of bicycles contact the carrier along the soft rubberized cradles that are integrated into the carrier's bike arms. Prior to vehicle movement, bikes are further secured to bike arms, the carrier frame and each other if necessary by additional straps. First, I orderd this rack about a month ago. As is usually the case I received it day's before the delivery date. However, the rack sent to me did not have the 80" strap used to secure the bike to the rack itself. Thre were only 6 straps; while I could secure the rack to my car, I could not secure my bike to the rack. I called the customer service number listed on the instructions that came with the rack and was told to return it to the retailer and it would be replaced. I simply followed the instructions in Amazon's return/replace policy and a replacement was sent out immediately. It too, arrived earlier than stated WITH the 80" strap intact. I used this rack for the first time this past weekend when a friend and myself began a trip on the Great Allegheny Passage. I loaded both bikes on the rack, drove about 24 miles on weather beaten, pothole and patched plagued roads to and from our start point and noticed upon arrival and return that the rack and bikes were both safe and firmly secured. I did use and would suggest (as do the instructions) additional shock cord which I purchased separately, but you can get bungee cords from any dollar store for minimal price and wuold be well worth the investment. Aside from inspecting the rack upon recieiving it ensuring the 80" strap is available (7 straps total) the only other recommendations I would make would be carefully following the instructions included with the rack and there should not be any problems. This is the second bike rack I have purchased from Thule Inc. via Amazon. The first was a trailer hitch bike rack and it worked wonderfully well and I still have it; I changed car's and no longer have a trailer hitch. but, the SR3162 works just as well and I will suggest that others looking for a quality product at a good price consider it. All said, it is a quality product sold at a very good price and It appears that if I take good care of this product according to the instructions there is no reason it shouldn't last a long time. if I had to buy this item again, I definitely would. ... show more

I think three bikes would be a little unstable but for 1 or 2 it worked great for an 8-hour highway drive through some nasty weather. You definitely want to either loop the trailing ends of the straps around the bike or bring a couple extra cords to secure your bikes — they include one strap for that purpose but it’s not enough on its own. This rack rubbed paint off my car body and bike. There's rubber padding to cushion it and the bike on a couple spots, but it's unpadded in-between them and metal from the rack makes contact with my trunk when the bike bounces and shifts in transit. The provided bike fastener is just a single nylon strap. You're supposed to wrap it around the bike and tie a knot. I bought other fasteners, but even with them my bike nearly fell off on the freeway. It fell off one arm when I loaded a bike on the outermost/3rd slot. I've used this rack about 4-5 times and it got the job done, but it took about 20-30 minutes each time to get my bike on and tied down securely. The paint issue is something you'll face with many hanging racks like this one. But after I bought this, I saw a cheaper hanging rack at Target with buckled straps to fasten down the bike. ... show more

    • Poor rack. Bikes nearly fell of my car... 3 times
I bought this rack to hold mine and my girlfriends bikes when we decided to go on a trail farther away from where we live. The rack worked well for about 40 miles, but after that our bikes would loosen the straps and nearly fall of the rack. In about a 10 mile span on the express way I had to pull over 3 times to tighten the straps because they were nearly entirely undone. When I finally got home I was sad to find that the bikes had scratched my new car from moving around so much. I would not recommend this bike rack to anyone. ... show more

    • Long upper straps work for small hatchback with rear spoiler
Not the greatest design or quality, but it works for my needs, i.e. only one bike, and I couldn't find another affordable rack that would work with the rear spoiler on my small car. I use Velcro to secure my bike to the notched holding bars.

Bought this as a used item but you wouldn't be able to tell. Packaged in original packaging and appears unused. For the deal, couldn't go wrong. They probably spent half the price on shipping. Holds our 2 bikes perfectly, with room to spare since it is rated for 3. Mounts sturdy on the back of an SUV. Haven't tried it on a car trunk yet. ... show more

As a first time bike rack buyer, this rack is super easy to attach because I had my son do it - but if I HAD to do it I could have no problem! Holds a women's bike with no additional equipment. Easy on & off & easy to secure the bike. Highly recommend. Outstanding equipment for the price.
