  • UPDATED: The Shark and My Two Hairy Doggies
Style: Matrix Self-Empty
I've owned and used the Matrix shark self-emptying vacuum now every 2 days for about 5 months now. I am ready to report "The Great and Could Be Better". It vacuums about 700SF normally and weekly 1200SF. Here are my likes and dislikes. Keep in mind I have two dogs, a Golden Retriever (otherwise known as a hair shedding machine) and a lab mutt. LIKES: 1. My (****all hardwood and vinyl****) floors stay consistently vacuumed clean due to the 2 day vacuuming cycle I'm on. I like it that it keeps the areas below my bed clean as well. There is NO WAY I can keep the floors so clean manually. I'm older and besides, I don't want to dedicate hours each week to that task. COULD BE BETTER: 1. Battery charging. I had a older unit from a different manufacturer and it would clean the same house and floors and have at least 30% charge still remaining after completion. The Shark ALWAYS must pause and go to charge mode for at least a couple of hours with every use cleaning my 700SF space. It's like Shark used a small battery. If you think this is no big deal because it returns to the dock and self charges, you'd be wrong. Although it does in fact recharge flawlessly. While it is recharging it sits quietly..... BUT... But the vacuum also sometimes needs manual cleaning if hair wraps around the brush or isn't fully expended during docking cycles. So, more times than I'd like (a couple a week I'd say), I stop hearing the unit running thinking that it completed the cleaning and is now charging... but it didn't. Said another way, I may be thinking it's charging when in fact it's ill from ingesting too much dog hair! It's not the end of the world, I deal with it. But it is ANNOYING after the 20th time. Granted, a notice comes to the app. But you have to remember to open the app. I don't mean to make this sound worse than it is. It's the difference between a vacuum that overall does a better job than vacuuming manually, and one that is perfect. The shark is NOT perfect. 2. Speaking of cleaning - mine is the 45 day version which only manages a week or so because of my 2 dogs. So I make it a habit every couple of vacuums to empty the canister. It's not a huge deal. But if you have dogs, don't expect 45 days. At all. 3. This is not their top of the line model. The higher version is much more sensitive to detecting and acting on ground clutter. A babies rattle left on the floor etc. I knew that when I bought it. However, as I found out, using the app's scheduling system (e.g., vacuum every tuesday automatically) fairly useless and I stopped trying. The reason is I must properly police and prepare the house immediately before it vacuums. Instead, I do a visual and tidy of the house first and then press the clean button. Had I known then what I know now, I would have bought the more sensitive shark. CONCLUSION: It may seem that I have knocked the unit, and I guess in some of the annoyances I have. But overall, I have a cleaner house because of it. And that matters in the deep south. I won't bore you with the details but keeping my floors always clean keeps the brown recluse spiders at bay. My last vacuum did that, then when it died I did not have one for a year. The spiders enjoyed a comeback because there was a lot more smaller bugs drawn to the dog hair and floor dust. Then I got shaky and after a few months, we are back in a safer house. True story. ... show more

  • Caveat Emptor
Style: AI Ultra Self-Empty
I rarely write 1 star reviews, preferring to give the benefit of the doubt. But I will definitely make and exception in this case, in hopes of preventing anyone else from going thru what I have with this product. This is not my first Shark Robot vacuum, it is my second. The first one worked pretty well for almost a year, and there was an accident and the robot got wet. I called, and asked if it could be serviced, as I was willing to pay to have it repaired. The support person said they don't service them, but offered to sell me a battery. If the battery didn't fix the problem, I could send it back for a refund, minus shipping, which one way was almost half of the cost of the battery. I opted out. They offered me a discount, on a new one, but it was still way to expensive to buy it direct. Instead, i opted to check reviews and purchased this model. It took a while to get, as in over a week and a half, maybe two, so we were anxious to get it back up and running. I purchased the Shark because of how well the previous model worked. From the start it had issues. My house is large enough that it can't complete the cleaning run without return and recharge, a feature it is supposed to carry out. Unfortunately, long before it would get half way thru the run, the robot would stop, often in the middle of the floor, and the message would be my roller is stuck and I cannot move.... since it was scheduled to run while we were at work, by the time we got home the battery would be dead and it would have to be put back on the base to charge and try the next day. The next day, if I didn't check it before leaving for work, it would not run because it was disconnected. I had to hold the clean button down until it completely turned off and then put it back on the base to have it reconnect. The next time it failed it said it could not empty the dust bin. This robot is not very different from the previous model, which I had cleaned weekly for almost a year, so I am very familiar with disassembly and cleaning the robot, I checked, there is nothing blocking the ports and the bin was completely empty on the robot and the docking station. At this point I felt there was something wrong, so I called Shark Ninja, the wait time was over 90 minutes, so I opted for a return call. It took about an hour before they called back, and I was on the call for almost 30 minutes. The tech determined that it was a firmware issue and that the update would need 24 to 48 hours to run. He had me cancel the scheduled run, this was at 2032 local time on Tuesday evening. It was scheduled to run again on Friday morning. He told me this would be plenty of time, and that it should run just fine. I did as instructed, confirmed with him that the robot was on the dock, and not scheduled to run before Friday, and was connected according to the app. Fast forward to Friday morning, I prepped the house making sure there were no obvious obstructions, and when I opened the app to make sure it was scheduled to run, it was disconnected again. I thought perhaps this was a result of the firmware update, as I'm an IT guy by trade and familiar with electronics and firmware updates. I held the button down and turned it off, put it back on the dock and watched to make sure it said connected before leaving for work. I came home and it was on the dock, and my message was that it could not empty the dust bin. I checked, there was nothing in the bin, and there were no obstructions in the dock or the robot that would prevent emptying if it had anything to empty. I called tech support again, and the guy started making excuses that it takes 48 business hours for the firmware update and that it hadn't been long enough and wanted me to leave it for 48 business hours to see if it would update. I told him I was tired of waiting on them, and that I wanted to return it, which is an inconvenience in itself, and have them send me another one. He refused, I told him he could rest assured this was the last Shark product I would purchase, and that I still had time on my Amazon order to return it. I filed for the return, and it tells me I may have to wait another 30 days after they receive it before I get my refund. Buyer BEWARE!!! If you buy one and it works, great! if not, you will spend countless frustrating hours on the phone with Shark Ninja support trying to get a resolution. Me, I'm going to buy another brand. I've got a cheapo Yeedi at my business that works better than this! If I could give negative stars, I would! ... show more

  • Lazy cleaning at its finest.
Style: IQ Self-Empty
I like this vacuum. I could clean areas two and three times in a day and still have a charged battery. And better yet, I don’t have to be home to do so. I am satisfied with my vacuum. Definitely for people who get tired of pushing a vacuum cleaner back and forth. You do have to set “no-go” zones for some spots on your cleaning map in your home. Other than that, this vacuum is easy to set up, and use. The app gives you full control of the vacuum, and sometimes when it “falls off a cliff” you can find the vacuuming easily with the app. You may have to use the “Matrix” cleaning setting to get that deep cleaning you want, but not necessary when you set the vacuum for routine cleaning throughout the week. A great buy for lazy people who still like cleanliness. ... show more
