I always set up my external drives for us on a Mac. That process is quick! Now, this drive isn't speedy if you are transferring terabytes of data to it? But when doing off loading and Time Machine backups, this drive does the job! If I fill this drive up before the end of the year? I will purchase another, organize the files by month and year. This device is fragile and poorly designed. I’ve used WD most of my life and wanted to try a different brand. Well, that didn’t go so well. Right after, (not exaggerating here) I transferred my life to this HD it fell 1 feet, onto a highly carpeted floor wheel it was in an insulated case. The USB C connector is a great benefit of the Seagate Ultra Touch HDD 5TB. Most portable drives like this use a USB Micro B connector on the drive. The USB Micro B connector has a long history of early failures due to a design which is not very strong and a wide profile that allows the user to apply a force with leverage that over time breaks wires in the connector. For some reason, typical reviewers of portable HDDs focus on cost only and ignore this problem with USB Micro B connectors. For Windows users, save yourself some future trouble and format as NTFS. The NTFS format allows some file types that the default exFAT format cannot handle. When you back up a large collection of files, there is a good chance that there are one or more files that exFAT does not handle. ... show more

I loved this thing since I got it at the tail end of 2019. I save all my important docs, pictures, emulators, etc on this drive. I do not use it for automated backup and I use a Miscrosoft Surface Book 2. My issue with this hard drive is sometimes it takes a while for it to load after putting in my password. The high probability of constantly troubleshooting and losing all of my precious data freaks me out. I can deal with unplugging and re-plugging once or twice to get it to work. Tonight I tried to get it to load for 3 hours, doing combinations of laptop restarts, unplugging and re-plugging, switching power cords, trying to use Toolkit to deactivate the password feature (that's where it always seems to freeze and stop responding). It seems like it doesn't stay powered on long enough through the loading process and just stops responding. I have not tried calling customer support yet as it's almost 23:00 EST as of this writing, but I may try tomorrow. If it is something that is easily fixed, I would love to give it 5 stars. UPDATE 2/22/21: I was finally able to disable password encryption and no issues! 4 stars only because I'm not sure if it will act up again when I re-enable it. ... show more

First I love the compact size and then the price for 2T is very good. It wasn't hard to set up with my MacBookPro. Once I went through the downloaded installer and was able to go to the Time Machine in my system preferences and check this as my preferred backup device. The first backup is a little over one hour but I have a lot to download so the time to do this is fine with me. I also liked the fact that it came with a USB-C adaptor so I didn't have to go to an Apple dongle. I have used G Drives in the past but the prices are extremely high now if all you are doing is backing up to your personal computer. I am not a tech savvy person but I didn't need any tech support to get this running. ... show more

I received the drive and it continually threw up file errors regardless of the computer or cable I used. Called tech support who confirmed it was defective. Was told they would ship one in7-10 days, and then I would ship the bad one back. No one said shipping would be at my expense. Called 15 days later about not receiving the replacement. Was first told, 'Well RMA was only created 2 days ago, you need to give us time.' I provided proof of the original conversation that it had been OVER 15 days. Then they switched tack, and told me I had to ship it to them, first, on my own dime (contradicting their 1st set of instructions) before they'd send out a replacement. At this point, I realized I could just ship it back to Amazon FOR FREE and take the credit and buy a drive from a different manufacturer. Of course, I could have shipped it back to Amazon for free, and asked for a replacement as well (but they had pissed me off by this point). So, in the future, why bother to even use technical support for a defective product when I can get it more easily replaced through Amazon itself? Charging clients to ship back a defective product should be illegal. If it is defective, return shipping should be on Seagate's dime, not mine. ... show more

I have a 2017 MacBook Pro with only a 256gb SSD. I've been able to manage thus far, until my job has transitioned into more media and editing. Using primarily Photoshop & Adobe Illustrator has made this external hard drive a necessity. I formatted it to Mac OS Extended (journaled) using DIsk Utility and have it set up as my scratch disk for my Adobe Cloud and it has been perfect for my needs. Easy and fast and it's quiet too. Small footprint makes it easy to throw in my bag and bring it with me. I'm very pleased! *One important thing to note that can be seen in the stock photos, but not gleaned from the title: the unit itself is NOT usb c...but rather they include a usb 2 to usb 3 adapter. At 2TB...I should be good to go for a very long time! ... show more
