  • Decent value assuming they hold up
I use these as a bare drive in a drive dock to incrementally back up my two laptops (one Windows and another macOS). As with any hard drive, the marks of quality are longevity, speed and accuracy. So far, they have worked accurately as expected for a week. If they fail prematurely, I’m sure I will update my review. I thought the price was decent for a 7,200 RPM 2.5” 1TB HDD. It’s hard for me to buy into the “SSHD” branding - this is far from as fast as a real SSD, I don’t see any speed advantage with whatever small portion of the drive is solid state, and I would never use it as a primary gaming drive. For a backup drive operating in the background, it’s fine. (After using SSDs for so long, one forgets how slow HDDs really are. Maybe this is much faster than a standard 7,200 RPM HDD but my subjective frame of reference is so far off now. And I haven’t spent the time to objectively speed test them.) If I’m using a drive for any primary purpose, I’d pony up the extra cash for a SSD - the significant speed savings of a SSD is worth the extra money. The price on these drives seems to fluctuate more than most products on Amazon, so that plays into the value equation. Today, the cost is 30% more than when I bought them a week ago. That sort of increase would push me to look at alternatives, of which there are many. Plenty of people are very loyal to specific HDD brands due to good or bad past experiences. I’ve had both types of experiences with every brand around, so it usually comes down to price for similar specs unless there’s a clear manufacturing defect with a specific batch of drives. If I can get these at or under the amount I paid and they continue to hold up, I will probably keep buying them. ... show more

  • Great Drop-In Upgrade For PS4
As a Dad's Day gift for my Son-in-Law (and fellow gamer, abeit a Console Peasant) I decided to repair his Sony Playstation 4. It had suffered stuffered a drive failure and he's not been in funds to make repairs (what with his paycheck going to pay for toys and oatmeal for my grandsons). So I thought for Dad's Day it'd be a nice surprise to source a replacement drive and put his PS4 back in service -- Call of Duty won't play itself, you know. This was as easy an install as I've ever experienced -- popped the left-side cover off, unscrewed the retaining screw holding the drive tray in, pulled out and swapped drives, and then reversed the process. Visited Sony.com and downloaded the latest firmware version to a USB thumb drive (NOTE: You'll want to grab the "New Drive" version, not the "Upgrade" version) and then installed it in a few minutes. According to my Son-in-Law, the speed on this thing is stupid-quick compared to the old version -- he's very pleased with the results, which is all to the good as far as I'm concerned. Good value for price, good performance, and he's able to game again. What's not to like? TL;DR: Great drop-in upgrade for the PS4, perfect fit, tons of room, speed to match. ... show more

  • Excellent drive
I ordered this to add to my son’s hp omen gaming laptop. The NVMe drive that came in it was great but very limiting at 250gb. With the addition of the 1TB drive he was able to keep boot up files on the NVMe drive and all his game files loaded to the new firecuda. Now it is gaming excellence. It worked so well that after a while I ordered one for his PS4 slim and it completely breathed new life into that machine. Boot up time was cut in half and game load times were reduced by almost as much. Nearly anything with a HDD would benefit from one of these, especially at the price point vs a non hybrid ssd ... show more

  • Great Choice
I am not a gamer, unless you count solitiare, but I wanted a drive with some extra performance. At first i was about to return it. It felt warmer to the touch than some of my other HDDs and my external adapter was also warmer. I also did some reading and found that these types of drives do tend to run warmer. I decided to go ahead and clone my drive and give it a try. Using Seagate's utility the clone took 2.5 hours for 600gig. The utility was easy to use and their download was easy to find. Once done I dropped it in my laptop and aside from seeming to take forever on the first booth it came up fine. Performance is great. Doing a *.jpg in a folder with over 1,000 medium resolution jpg files was awesome. The files were found and thumbnails displayed faster than I have ever seen. I wiil probably buy more drives. ... show more

  • Not the new model as advertised, Works fine
Edit: Installed in my son’s Xbox One as the internal drive. Worked fine and it doubled his storage. Not sure if the hybrid drive will perform any better. Probably should have just got an SSD. Maybe once the 1tb price comes down a little. Overall, nothing wrong with this drive. The model number difference might just be retail vs oem packaging with no real difference to the drive itself. The drive was sealed, but the models don’t match up like other reviewer. The box is labeled ST1000LXZ15, but received ST1000LX015. Weird thing is the box has the new model number on it but says it contains the old one. Not sure what type of mind games they are trying to play. Either way, order the older model for a couple dollars cheaper because that’s what you will get if you order this one. Have yet to install it, but it’s sealed so I am confident it’ll work. ... show more

  • PS4 Replacement
Games are so big today. So detailed they take forever to load from my 4TB external storage. Replaced the internal drive with this and moved current games to internal storage with great results.
