  • Only failed SSD I've owned - Seagate RMA is a nightmare - get a refurb for your failed NEW drive
Capacity: 2TB Style: 520 NVMe - Gen 4
Every Seagate HDD I've ever purchased has failed. That's maybe a dozen or so over the years, and I just stopped buying them. I've bought SSDs (SATA, M.2 NVMe, m.SATA, and even IDE or DOM), and none of these have ever failed. I've cycled them out as they've gotten older, but I've never had a drive fail. Between my home office and all the tech stuff I do, this is in the hundreds of drives (almost all Samsung, with some Crucial/Micron and Sandisk mixed in). Since SSDs are so reliable, and these drives are backed with a 5-year warranty (and good reviews). I thought it would be a fine purchase.... until it failed a mere few months later Seagate: - made the RMA process a pain - I had to pay for the RMA shipment, even though Seagate sold me a premium drive that was faulty (just outside the Amazon return Window and AMEX window) - Seagate confirmed receipt of the drive, and hasn't sent a new one - two weeks later - I have no idea when I'll receive a new drive - it's difficult to reference the RMA and get any updates or human contact In the past, Western Digital or other companies ship a NEW drive, take your credit card number, and ask you to send the drive back as they ship the replacement. As long as they receive an undamaged drive, you don't get charged. This is awesome. Seagate is the polar opposite experience. Never again! I read the fine print, and it sounds like Seagate sends a REFURB to replace your failed NEW drive. I didn't buy a refurb - I bought a new drive. Send me a new drive to replace it. This is what I get. So after decades of working on friends' and family's computers and telling them to never buy Seagate, here's the Montezuma's Revenge: my "premium" NVMe with 2TB of my favorite games just up and dies. I had to go to Best Buy to test another drive in the slot, and sure enough, that worked fine. Seagate: never again ... show more

  • Expensive, but absolutely worth it for the PlayStation 5.
Capacity: 1TB Style: 530 w/ Heatsink NVMe - Gen 4
This internal SSD can come with a heatsink pre-installed (be sure to choose that version if you are picking this up for the PS5). Install took all of 5 minutes. Hardest part was getting the face plate off the PS5, which wasn’t hard at all. I definitely recommend this for PS5 users, as a quick way to expand your internal storage. Moving games from Console storage to the new installed M.2 SSD is insanely fast! ... show more

  • WARNING: Your motherboard must be newer to realize the full advertised speeds.
Capacity: 1TB Style: 520 NVMe - Gen 4
Truthfully, I would give this drive five stars, but I posted three so that people are more likely to read this important caveat: I bought this without much research because I knew this drive would fit my motherboard's M.2 slot. After I installed it I was getting disappointing speeds. For instance my sequential read speed according to the AS SSD benchmarking software was 723 MB/s. After a little research I found that only newer PC's with PCIe 3.0 or 4.0 are capable of clocking the higher published speeds with this drive. My motherboard has an older X99 chipset which by now is several years old. HOWEVER, in my case I was able to get a pretty cheap adapter card that bumped up my sequential reads to 2780 MB/s. It's right here on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GFDVXVJ (Note, there are several adapters offered on Amazon like this to choose from.) I just removed my SSD from my motherboard's M.2 slot, installed it in the adapter's M.2 slot and installed the adapter in a spare PCI x16 slot. Voila, 4x my initial speed. Later when Intel finally comes out with a PCIe 4.0 chipset I will likely use this SSD in that and realize the full published speed. AMD has PCIe 4.0 chipsets right now, if you can't wait. Note PCIe 3.0 motherboards (i.e. X299 chipsets and later) will yield higher speeds as well, but still somewhere short of what this drive is capable of. ... show more

  • Perfect match for the PS5
Capacity: 2TB Style: 530 w/ Heatsink NVMe - Gen 4
After researching various PCIe Gen4 SSDs for the PS5 (and discovering this drive had the most votes for "best performance" across multiple review/analysis sites) I decided to give it a shot, making sure to get the one with the included heatsink (important!) I was not disappointed, like WOW... For full disclosure, I purchased the 2TB SSD with the included heatsink. # Easy to install: Sony gets points for this category as well for making it so simple to open and add/upgrade the SSD inside the PS5. We simply slid off the white cover, removed the SSD expansion door/shield, and used the already included (with the PS5) hardware to fasten the SSD into the slot. The dimensions of the SSD (including the heatsink it comes with) are a perfect match for the SSD expansion slot on the PS5. It fits like a glove (see pictures). Then it was simply a matter of closing the expansion slot, replacing the cover, and booting up the PS5! # Setup: As soon as the PS5 booted up, it recognized the new SSD and gave me the option to "format" it (required to set it up to recognize the PS5's file system). The formatting process took about 20 seconds and then it was done! It was ready to use. You must make sure you go into the PS5's 'Storage' settings to make sure you designate your new drive as the installation location for new games, or specific content (if you want to use it that way, of course). Or you can simply transfer files to and from the SSD expansion at your leisure. # Performance: While this drive claims read speeds of around 7,300MB/s your mileage may vary on the PS5. The PS5 reported around 5,700MBs - but keep in mind this is not a limitation of the SSD but the data transfer subsystem of the PS5 itself. Rest assured, it's most likely the drive is capable of up 7,300MB/s on compatible hardware, and you can sleep easy knowing that its bandwidth capabilities are well in excess of what the PS5 needs to run at peak performance. I ran a test by copying Uncharted 4: A Thief's End (57GB of data) from the PS5 local storage to the new SSD. It took around ONE MINUTE to transfer! That's insane. I then installed the new Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves collection to this storage and benchmarked the performance/load times of the game, and they were on par with the PS5's local storage, loading up an entire level in just under 2 seconds! I've read that high performance SSDs like this one can even perform a little faster than the on-board SSD that came with the PS5, but, the performance of either drive (internal or expansion) is so fast already, the differences will be too subtle to notice. Especially on PS5 optimized games that load faster than the time it probably takes to start your stopwatch and benchmark. # Final Thoughts This SSD (with the included heatsink) is clearly designed with PS5 expansion in mind. If that is why you're looking at this SSD then I can strongly recommend it. It's easy to install, fits like a glove, and performs well in excess of what the PS5 requires. It has been going strong in my PS5 for 6 weeks now and I am extremely happy with this purchase. ... show more
