  • Love it
The other external drive started malfunctioning and I replaced it with this one before it died. So far, all's well.

  • It does the job, but is a pain to setup.
I bought this attractive little backup drive to do just that. Backup and look nice on my desk. It can do that and is doing that. But, it filled up after only 64GB and needed to be formatted. And that was not well explained by Seagate. It took their tech support a number of days to get back to me. By that time, I had read up online about format issues on backup drives and got it working. It is what it is. But if you're not well versed in computers, this could be an issue. It is not as plug and play as the RavPower SSD backup drive I got to be my "portable" drive, even tho these are both portable. And the Toolkit utility that comes with it is annoying to use. But, at the end of the day, it did what it was designed to do. Backup files and look nice on my desk. ... show more

  • Worked for almost 2 years, then almost lost all my data...
First - external storage drives are almost always a crapshoot, especially with HDD rather than SSD, as the former can have hardware malfunctions at the slightest breeze. This I knew beforehand, but even with that being said, I doubt after this drive that I'll be buying a Seagate HDD again. I've had a total of 3 of these Backup Plus Slim drives over the last 5 years, and each one lasted almost 2 years before I started seeing telltale signs of the drive malfunctioning and needed to make a mad rush to transfer my files to a new drive before it died. The first 2 drives were for full-time portable use, and they held up fairly well for being carried around and plugged into many machines. They have always generally been easy to use, and I had very little issues with compatibility, etc. I wasn't surprised or dissatisfied with their lifespan being about 2 years and figured that was appropriate for their level of use. This most recent one, however, was plugged into my desktop and stationary for almost its entire lifetime. It was used on the go less than 10 times total, so I figured there was less of a likelihood of it dying early (sure, most drives last only 3-5 years, but 22 months is still significantly less than I expected). I started noticing error messages pop up when connected that the drive needed to be scanned, fixed, and repaired, but the windows repair service would stay at 99% indefinitely, and upon exiting the troubleshooter, the drive functioned like normal. It was still not a good sign, though, so I went ahead and placed an order for a new drive (an SSD from another brand this time), hoping it would arrive in time to make a transfer. No such luck. A few days later, upon booting up, my computer didn't recognize the drive. After 2 afternoons on the phone with Seagate customer service--who were as accomodating as they could be, and even sent me a complimentary copy of the file recovery software to attempt to recover my data from home--I was resigned to the fact that the drive had been corrupted and my data was lost. Regarding backups - of course, in general, any data that isn't backed up is a danger waiting to happen. Half of my data was backed up to my desktop, but the main purpose for the Seagate drive was that I did not have 2 TB of storage anywhere else to be able to store the files, so half were just living on this drive. A misjudgment on my part, one I won't make again, but my last hope was that I purchased a Rescue Data Recovery plan with this drive. For anyone choosing to buy a storage device from anywhere for any reason, I highly recommend data recovery (I would even consider it imperative), and Rescue Data was well worth the small additional cost to the purchase. The gentleman I spoke with on the phone when I called to submit a claim assuaged my concerns in a moment, with more confidence than any of the Seagate customer service reps I spoke with (no diss to them, they probably thought the data was lost as well). He let me know that the lab has an 85% success rate of data recovery and that if they aren't able to recover it, the customer receives a form of compensation to help make up for the loss. The process takes about a month, which was a bit hard to swallow, but without the data recovery I would be going a lot longer than a month without access to my files. I quickly shipped off my drive and tried to keep my expectations low to avoid disappointment. Lo and behold, a month later, I received word that my data was recovered successfully and they were shipping it back on a new drive. This review is here with two messages: first, a glowing endorsement of Rescue Data Recovery plans, even though this isn't their product page (I'm heading there next), and second, that I decided life is too short to continue buying Seagate backup slim drives every 2 years with the fear that I'll lose all of my files. ... show more

  • So far so good
So far so good. Bought this to replace a unit that was making noises and giving the impression it was going bad. Having previously lost data due to not paying attention to these little signals, I purchased this Seagate and quickly transferred everything to this new unit. The transfer time was quick – – much quicker than two other units I currently use for backing up data. At minimum, there’s peace of mind when your data may be transferred quickly and reliably to a new unit made by a well-known company like Seagate. Love the red color, too! ... show more

  • Takes a licking, keeps on "ticking."
I've taken this drive with me on my travels, over the past year. One time, I dropped the drive on an airport floor, and was surprized that it came back to life, unscathed. The drive holds many photographs, videos, and other high-capacity storage items. I can stream directly from the drive to my computer easily, for any format or use. ... show more

  • Great Little Backup
I've only used this once so far, but it worked just great and was easy to use. I backed up all my photos and videos from my main computers hard drive. I have plenty of space left. I now that the reassurance that my photos anf videos are safe.

  • cable attachment doesn't work well
The portable disk drive is ok, but every time I try to use it, the computer says it is not detected unless I hold the cable in the hard drive a certain way.
