First Dye I've Used That Works, But Doesn't Burn Or Itch!

UPDATE: I've now ordered Schwarzkopf Simply Color Permanent Hair Color multiple times since December 2022, and after trying Medium Brown and Dark Chocolate I finally settled on Jet Black and it's just awesome. The other colors were fine, but just not as dark as they appeared in the pictures. However I'm an older male with extremely long and full, all gray, hair. So depending on your hair length and condition you'll have to experiment to find what works best for you. In any case I'm primarily updating this review because after six applications I've still never had any allergic reactions, and that sets this product heads and tails above all others I've tried over the decades. The only other additional comments I have is that, as others have noted, it's not quite "permanent" as it needs to be reapplied every 3 months or so, but this is still much longer than products like Just for Men. And finally, as the description notes, if you have longer than shoulder length hair you will indeed need two boxes. I was in a hurry once and tried getting away with one box, but with hair going almost all the way down my back, it wasn't enough and the color was much lighter. So my recommendation is to try it even if you don't have problems with allergic reactions. The color is much better, without the brassy/orange tint of products like Just For Men, and it lasts much longer. ORIGINAL REVIEW: Wow, I wasn't sure what to expect since every hair die I've used in my life has burned and/or itched like crazy. I learned long ago that it was a chemical called PPD that's in almost all dyes, but could never find anything else that worked. However this dye uses HPPS (Hydroxyethyl-p-phenylenediamine sulfate) which is similar to PPD, but doesn't cause allergic reactions in many PPD sensitive people. And wow, it worked incredibly well for me. There's been absolutely no itching or burning, and I waited 72 hours before writing a review just to be sure. And the color is great, and covered my grey as well as any other dye. I only wish I'd gotten a darker color, as the medium brown for this dye is lighter than the "Just For Men" I used to use. But it's a great shade, not brassy or orange at all. So next time I'll just get a darker brown. One final note, while the HPPS worked for me, unfortunately it won't work for everyone, and some people will be allergic to it is as well. But like I said, it causes far fewer allergic reactions than PPD, and is definitely worth a try! ... show more

If the people who make this color see this, please don't stop making it! This is the best color I've ever used. I am growing out a pixie cut. Having not seen my natural hair color in over 20 years, I decided to find out what it was. After I did that, I immediately went to the store and looked for something to color the nightmare that was my hair; a blend of salt & pepper and old orange. It was terrible. The first thing I noticed was the packaging. I appreciate that it's biodegradable and recyclable. Then I noticed the time you leave it in your hair is longer than 'regular' dyes, which to me means it's more delicate to your hair, and it was. I left it on for the recommended 30 and rinsed. My hair is very fine and delicate so I have to be careful with it. From the minute I took the towel off my head I knew I loved this color. At first, yes as I have seen in another review, the new growth is very vibrant! For me it was almost a deep violet color-which I loved. That same violet color attached itself to the gray in my hair and gave it really cool looking violet/auburn highlights, while coloring the rest of my hair a nice chocolate brown. I don't think it's too dark or too light. It's very gentle, which I appreciate. My head didn't burn once during the 30 minute wait. I can't say that about other box dyes. The smell wasn't bad at all. If you've ever used Clairol, you've lost your nose hairs a few times. This is NOTHING like that. It's very pleasant and when you rinse it off, your hair doesn't feel like straw until you put that conditioner on it. I rinsed mine out with tepid water and was very gentle with it before I conditioned it, but I still think the dye is very very gentle. This color is AWESOME and even my guy loves it. He even asked me to come to the patio door where he could look at it in the natural light and told me how cool the auburn violet streaks were. I'm very happy with this color and will keep using it as long as they keep making it. And hey, if the folks who make it read this, KEEP MAKING THE CHOCOLATE CHERRY! lol Update: my color was fading and I had a box sitting here so I decided to try it again. The only thing I missed the first time was that I was not supposed to shampoo my hair out after I rinse the dye. I typically use a cleansing conditioner not shampoo, but I was unaware I'm supposed to skip that step and go straight to the conditioner they include. No shampooing needed! In the second collage, the first picture is one month after using this dye for the first time. I tried to include a picture of it in the processing phase so you can see it doesn't get too red. I am pleased with the after shot even though it is a little darker on the ends, I expected that as they are fine and absorb color easily. It slowly fades over the course of the month but I am very pleased with this product because it is so gentle for my hair and I love the color. ... show more

This hair color exceeded my expectations. The formula was easy to mix and apply, even doing it myself at home, and the consistency wasn't runny or messy. The color came out rich and true to the box — no brassy or uneven tones — and it didn't feel drying or damaging to my hair afterward. Nice Color, But Much Darker Than Expected

I really liked this hair dye overall. It was easy to apply, covered well, and the color lasted a long time without fading quickly. My hair felt soft afterward, and I appreciated that it didn't have an overwhelming chemical smell. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that the color turned out much darker than the picture on the box. I expected a medium brown shade, but the result was significantly deeper and darker than advertised. If you're choosing a shade, you may want to consider going a little lighter than what you think you need. That said, the quality of the dye was excellent and the color stayed vibrant for weeks. LOVE THIS DYE!!! The color is great, but I would definitely suggest going a little lighter than you think you need if you have dark brown hair and want to dye it darker. I was a little too ambitious and it made my hair nearly black, but it was still super cute.

After 2 48hr allergy test that was negative, stic had reaction when applied.

UPDATE: i really wished this will work for me but did not. Just cancelled my subscription. I have tried so many options so I have several partially used dye that I wasted. I did my 48 hour allergy test twice. No reaction, so I tried it on my mustache. Thanks for your review Thomas. I got the courage to try this product. It’s only been 12 hours but Im so excited to this new discovery. I just left it for 15 minutes, has a little skin stain but Im sure it will go away, like in the skin test. So far so good. I have tried a lot of products including henna that you have to leave for hours and put saran wrap on your face. Also used Herb, which is good but you have to apply 3 times in a row just to get a little color. Then this, completely colored it in one application. That is why Im so excited. Still hoping that theres no allergic reaction more than how the color will last for me. I will for sure update this review, for sure. I have tried some dyes that says PPD free but failed on the allergy test. This said no PTD, so i guess Im allergic to both PPD and PTD. Theres a modified chemical on this that some says similar but seems to work. Please work!!! UPDATE: A few hours after, my mustache begin to itch on some area, I took loratadim and applied cortisone on my lip. So disappointed but as of right now, no rash, just itchy. New Go To Hair Dye

I know most people are coming to this product in search of a hypoallergenic hair dye so I’ll cut straight to the point. This did not irritate my allergies at ALL. I’m someone who only recently developed a hair dye allergy (after previously bragging for years that I felt no pain or burn from any type of dye or bleach) and as a natural blonde who longs to be brunette and had already been through every color of the hair dye rainbow while in high school I was very frustrated. I tried other PPD-free dyes and they all had either little to no effect on coloring my hair or would end up irritating my allergies regardless and boy did they stink! But this dye is my new holy grail. Beautiful color, simple application reminiscent of my old go to box dyes, no irritation, and no pungent odor! My hair feels great as well! While first rinsing and drying it did feel a bit dry but as soon as I brushed it out it came back to life and felt soft and smooth. I’ve seen a couple reviews saying the color seems to fade. I haven’t had the time to properly test this yet but in my experience every dye, permanent or not, will begin to fade at one point or another. This is a dye I’m willing to take the chance with. It’s been so hard to find a decent hypoallergenic dye and this works so well and is so affordable, I don’t mind if I end up having to touch it up frequently. I’ve also seen a lot of people using this for grey coverage but I used it for a full head coloring. My hair length is a bit between my collarbone and chest and it’s all decently thick and I was able to color all of it while still having some dye leftover. I cannot recommend this dye enough! Just in case you need any additional context on my personal case to see if this dye is right for your needs: I am 22. Have been bleaching and dying my hair from streaks to whole head since I was 11. My allergy developed somewhere around 2ish years ago. I do not get any kind of direct scalp irritation from regular dye besides some subtly itchiness. My allergy is mainly in the form of a rash developing on my skin wherever the dye came in contact, and will spread to surrounding areas depending how much I give into scratching it. The rash will typically last for around 3 days after dying before clearing up. Even the best recommended PPD-free dyes I’d tried before would at least irritate my ears. This dye is the first one I’ve tried to cause no irritation AND deliver true-to-color results. The shade I purchased was Chocolate Cherry. It is the color I will continue to use. I hope this review helped you out in deciding if you’d like to buy this product. Worth a try if you are allergic to other colors

Ok... I did my research.. .and lots of it. I am allergic to hair color. As I got older, the more sensitive the back of my neck became. The last time I went to my hairdresser for a color, I was sick for 2 weeks! Never again!! So I did my research. Many people have reviewed this hair color that have allergies. Some reviews were better than others. I have hair past my shoulders... so I purchased two boxes just to be safe that I would have enough. One bottle ended up being enough. First thing I learned from other reviews, this goes on darker than expected! I have chestnut brown hair... I purchased the Medium Blonde, it ended up being the exact color of my hair. The instructions are pretty simple. It said to keep on hair 30 minutes. With that said, I have gray roots, and I hate them. Those pesky grays are about 3 inches long because I have PTSD from my hairdresser almost putting me in the hospital. When the color was in my hair, the top of my head tingled... that was the extent of any reaction I had. My eczema on the back of my neck and hair line did not flare at all.... so for any of you with those allergies... this is for sure a color to try. I kept it in 30 minutes like I said and they give a conditioner to put in after you rinse it out. The bad news is I have washed my hair twice since coloring and the grays on top are back already :( In other reviews I noticed that people say it does not last long, like 8 washes... so I was hoping to make it that long. Being this color gave me no reaction... I am giving it another try in about a month. This time I may keep on my top roots longer to see if that works..... I may try to buy a shade darker as well. It's worth a try for those who have allergies or just don't want those horrible chemicals soaking in your brain. Update 2/2025 I keep the color on my grays longer, about 45-50 mins and it lasts longer!! very mild on the scalp! ... show more
