I bought this drive to increase the storage available for my movies and TV shows on my media server. My 4TB drive was filling up. I admit that I felt forced to buy a Sandisk drive since I had previously bought drives from Crucial. But their decision to stop commercial sales forced me to try something new. I have to say, the drives are great. I only had one issue with the drive automatically ejecting from my Macbook when it was idle, but after a Google search I downloaded the Sandisk utility and updated the firmware of the drives and so far no further issues. The drives are small and quiet. The performance is great. I went with this model because I saw a review for the new model indicating that the new drive had failed after putting it under a sustained load. So far, no problems like that with this drive. Fast, tiny, and boring in the best way across Mac and Windows

I’ve been using this SanDisk Extreme 2TB portable SSD as a grab-and-go drive across three machines: a MacBook, a Dell XPS, and a desktop. That’s the test that matters for me — not a single-computer cable drawer toy. It stays small enough that I actually carry it, and it’s plug-and-play in practice: connect it and it works. Speed has felt super fast for everyday moves between those machines, which matches what you want from this class of USB-C portable SSD (the Extreme line advertises very high sequential speeds and a ruggedized pocketable design with IP65 water/dust resistance and drop-oriented durability claims). I haven’t had reliability drama on either Mac or Windows. I don’t have a long list of complaints because there haven’t been meaningful ones in my use. I can’t believe how small this SanDisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD is! It’s incredibly compact and lightweight, making it easy to carry in a pocket or laptop bag without taking up any space. The data transfer speeds are excellent. Copying large files is quick, and it has been reliable for backing up photos, videos, and other important files. It’s a great portable drive if you need fast external storage on the go. The only downside is the price—it is definitely on the expensive side. That said, you’re paying for a combination of portability, speed, and a generous 2TB of storage. If those features are important to you, it’s a worthwhile investment. Do NOT use Sandisk encryption

The SSD sustained data transfer speeds between 350 and 400 MB/s with large files. Once I knew the disk worked and before putting it to use I thought I would give their data encryption a try. Basically it creates a tiny read-only volume with a copy of their encryption software. This could be handy when you need it to access the encrypted data on a different computer. Their software will expose the encrypted volume and mount it provided you enter the correct password. From there is works like any other volume. I used the auto-mount option which eliminates having to keep entering a password when you mount the encrypted volume. It all seemed to work well enough although I was never quite sure how secure the data actually was. I expect it was encrypting the files’ content but left the directories and filenames exposed. Next I tried to disable the auto mount feature. Everything I tried failed and the volume continued to auto-mount. I reached out to SanDisk support who were friendly enough but their suggestions were just not working. The documentation they provided for how to reconfigure was not matching with what their software was doing. After spending over a month I got tired of playing “try this” and just asked them how to restore the device back to its initial pre-encrypted condition. They discouraged this and made a point of explaining it would result in the loss of all the data. I was only testing their encryption and didn’t care about losing the test data. Again, their instructions were not matching the software. For example they mentioned that entering the incorrect password 5 times in a row will bring up additional dialog options. It did not. (You need to enter the password to reconfigure the encrypted SSD and apparently to disable encryption altogether.) Eventually I got tired of going around and around and gave the Windows disk tools a try. It is still basically a disk so I should be able to reset it at the device level. Oddly I couldn’t get any of the windows tools (like disk management tool or diskpart) to remove the read-only partition. I was able to get the rest of the disk to reset and ended up with a two volume drive (although the reset volume might still have been encrypted). I tried how to articles from the internet with no success. Finally I gave up wasting time and asked SanDisk replace my drive. SanDisk wouldn’t take the drive back but eventually agreed to exchange it for a previously used and refurbished one. The exchange took nearly 2 months. Keep this in mind if you need to use their warrantee. Two months was plenty of time to research other encryption options. I chose VeraCrypt because it was the most flexible, supports multiple platforms, has thorough encryption, and was free thanks to the open source community. The setup was easy and worked exactly as advertised. I liked it so much I decided to keep using it. Also the encrypted volume exists as a file on SSD which can be deleted (like any file) when you decide you no longer need it. ... show more

I bought the 8TB model for $839.99 and am impressed & surprised. These are my results comparing the SanDisk Extreme 8TB SSD to a Samsung T9 SSD. SPEED — best result of 3 sequential AmorphousDiskMark speed tests (on an M5 MacBook Air): • SanDisk Extreme 8TB: 984 MB/s READ and 991 MB/s WRITE (remarkably close to SanDisk's advertised 1,050 MB/s). • Samsung T9 4TB: 1,028 MB/s READ and 976 MB/s WRITE (below its advertised 2,000 MB/s, but max theoretical speed for these drives is capped by the MacBook at 1,250 MB/s). WEIGHT: • The SanDisk Extreme 8TB weighed in at 61 grams — approximately 1/2 the weight of my Samsung T9 (121 grams), despite the SanDisk having DOUBLE the storage capacity. PRICE (at the time of this review): • A 4TB Samsung T9 costs $978.98, while the 8TB SanDisk Extreme costs $839.99. So an 8TB SanDisk with DOUBLE the storage capacity of a 4TB Samsung is somehow CHEAPER. (The SanDisk Extreme 8TB is currently 48% off, but has been heavily discounted for months.) BOTTOM LINE: For ~$840, the SanDisk Extreme 8TB is SUPERIOR to the Samsung T9. An 8TB drive that is CHEAPER than a 4TB competitor — at half the weight — seems almost too good to be true. Overall, the SanDisk Extreme 8TB is an excellent combination of capacity, portability, and real-world Mac performance, especially for its current price. ... show more

Excellent storage

I got this to hold my music library for my home server. I have been using it for about a month now and I liked it enough that I bought a second one. Transfers move quickly enough that loading the library over was not something I had to sit and wait on. It stays connected without dropping or needing to be reseated. The drive is small enough to sit next to the server without taking up any real space and it doesn't get warm to the touch. The rubberized body feels solid and the carabiner loop is there if you want to clip it to something, though mine just stays put. I didn't bother with the included software.
