This external is absolutely perfect for my needs. I bought the 2TB version and it has become my "everything" drive. I love having all of this space in such a portable form factor! It's actually smaller than I expected it to be and it slips perfectly in my pocket and disappears because it's so lightweight. Of course, don't rely on a drive like this alone as your only backup. I have a 12TB NAS with redundancy that I use to back up this SSD (among other things) and my NAS is automatically backed up via Backblaze, so I have three locations (Backblaze being remote), and I have redundancy on my NAS so if one of those drives fails then I can replace it without losing anything. Unfortunately I cannot harness the full speed of this drive because I'm using a 2014 MacBook Pro which only has USB-3, which is about half the speed of USB-C, furthermore I have this plugged into a powered USB hub. That being said, to my surprise I'm actually getting around 405 MB/s writes and 425 MB/s reads, which is significantly better than I thought I would get, this is a little over 4X faster than real world performance of a standard non-SSD external drive, so it's still plenty zippy for my needs! To test a sustained load I moved over my existing Kontakt library (music production plugins and such). A 160GB transfer took me 8 minutes and 23 seconds, which is perfectly fine, when moving using a standard non-SSD external it takes almost 35 minutes! A more reasonable 3GB transfer takes around 7-8 seconds, doing the same file transfer over to my WD EasyStore (standard HDD) takes about 38 seconds. For fun I tested transferring 3GB to my NAS and it took 1 minute 36 seconds. I expected it to be slow because I don't have the best internal network plus I'm using slow (but reliable) drives and it has to write the data multiple times. The NAS is just for bulk storage. The icing on top is the added durability. This is IP55 rated which means it can withstand dust and splashing, which means it's great for outdoor use for storing photos and such. Furthermore, it's rated to withstand a 2 meter (roughly 6.5 foot) drop. This is a great little drive! My MBP only has a 500GB drive and all of my plugins and samples were eating up hundreds of gigs and I was becoming really tired of constantly having to go through everything and try to maintain space. I wasn't even able to download all of my Kontakt content locally because I simply didn't have enough room, so I had to pick and choose what plugins I wanted to have locally, trying to store everything on the NAS was error-prone because Kontakt didn't like it for some reason but it was also way too slow. This drive is fast enough to where I can work on Logic Pro X projects directly on it without having to create scratch space locally, something I couldn't do with a normal non-SSD external (way too cumbersome). Now instead of having only 10-20GB local storage I’m back up to around 320GB - much better! I can breathe! Just remember - don't rely on any external as your only backup! Try to back up your most important data in three locations, one being a remote location, if possible.

I have a 2014 iMac desktop with a fusion drive that died on me. The cost to repair was over $1200, so that wasn't going to happen. I began looking into creating a boot drive from an external hard drive. After looking at HDD's with high storage, usually around 2-3TB, it was suggested that an SSD would perform much faster. Given the price discrepancy between HDD and SSD, I opted for the smaller storage with faster performance. It also appears to be common knowledge that SSDs are more reliable than HDD. So I went with this SanDisk 500GB SSD external. It was incredibly easy to setup, almost as easy and plug and play. I reformatted the drive to run macOS, which only uses about 12GB, from my MacBook. This took maybe 30 mins. The USB 3.0 is incredible, the data transfer took maybe a minute to complete. I was then able to reboot the laptop and start the OS from the SanDisk. It worked perfectly and I was able to setup a new desktop that ran off the external. With that done, I disconnected from the laptop and plugged it into my iMac. Booted from the SanDisk and voila, works perfectly. Very few differences in the overall performance and unless you look behind the monitor, you'd never realize the external drive was there. I've currently been using the iMac for 4-5 hours today and just checked the drive for heat. I can feel that it's warm and definitely not hot to the touch, not even very warm. Maybe with more intense use I would notice the heat levels other reviewers have noted but I have yet to experience that. Overall, this Mac-compatible SSD external drive has been excellent and for $110, certainly a more cost-effective method for replacing a damaged internal drive than taking to Apple. Two thumbs way up!

I cannot believe you can get such a perfect drive with so much memory packed into such a tiny package that works so well for such a low price. Sorry for the run-on sentence, but this little hard drive blows me away. Using it with a Macbook Pro. For Apple users only: when you get it, get rid of the pre-loaded software. This is very easy to do even if you are a complete novice. Go to Disk Utility and Erase. Name it whatever you want. Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), Scheme GUID Partition Map. That's it! You now have the most versatile solid-state portable external drive out there. One note: it does get quite warm if you transfer a lot of data over extended periods, but that hasn't affected its performance for me in the slightest. Lightning fast, even with USB 2.0.

This SSD feels expensive and is housed in a very nice protective shell. It's small and thin, perfect for traveling. The performance is great with extreme transfer speeds. I am a professional photographer and it is perfect for keeping all your photos/videos while I'm on an assignment or on vacation. If you're a travel photographer or like to save a lot of space while traveling, this is the perfect hard drive. I also have a few movies on there for long plane rides. You do have to buy an aftermarket hardshell case for it if you want to be extra safe and have space for the USB-C cord and USB-C to USB 2.0 converter it comes with. Overall great product. Have a 500gb and a 1tb SSD. Highly recommend!

A blazingly fast, amazingly tiny 2tb SSD with a great loop for hooking to backpack via carabiner. Using the included USB A adapter to transfer a 300gb folder of pictures to this SSD I achieved a throughput averaging 250 mb/s on my SurfaceBook. That's faster than any USB storage I've ever connected to a computer. I've owned a number of external SSDs as well as tons of external hard drives of every variety and spin speed, and this thing is blazingly faster than the rest. In fact, I think it's faster than a 1tb internal Samsung SSD I have in a NUC. Tiny, convenient and with a solidly bulletproof feel to boot. And, on Prime Day, I was able to purchase it for $399. This thing is wonderful. I plan to keep it with me in my messenger bag as backup and for media files that won't fit on my laptop's 512gb SSD. If you buy one of these drives, consider adding the co2crea Hard Travel Case for SanDisk 250GB/500GB/1TB Extreme Portable SSD SDSSDE60. It's a well-made little accessory, and with the included cord it's possible to attach the case to a ring inside your laptop bag.

8/2/20 Update: Both SanDisk 2TB SSDs continue providing terrific service. I am pleased & highly recommend, with the caveat about SSD heating up (see my descriptions below). I periodically touch the mounted SSD, feeling heat level & depending immediate task needs, will dismount the SSD allowing cooling, which is fairly quick. I carry out this routine as I do not want overheating resulting in shorter, SSD lifespan. So far, I feel this approach will result in longest possible lifespan (short of an actual SSD failure). This is a very good product. Updated: I purchased 2 units on 8/29/19; placed both into service after formatting for macOS - 1 SSD for cloning formatted APFS & 1 SSD formatted HFS+ for Time Machine backups. (I'm connecting to my MBP 15 i7 - 2016 - which has TB3 ports & I'm using TB3 (.5m) cables.) Amazing how small these SSDs are & to think they hold about 2TB! I like these SSDs; and, they are fast. Ok, here's some initial observation... While these SSDs work very well, I was surprised how hot they can become during extensive read / write tasks (emphasize, extensive - meaning task runs longer than 10 - 20 minutes). Added Note: If task is short duration, 2 - 5 minutes, SSD does not get hot - may get warm, but not hot. However if SSD remains connected, albeit dismounted, for an extended time, the SSD slowly heats up to eventually, be hot. I intended keeping these SSDs continually connected for convenience, but dismounted when not in use. However after extensive tasks and SSD got hot, the SSD didn't really cool down, even when dismounted but remaining connected. ...So I will be dismounting & disconnecting after completing extensive tasks, particularly for Time Machine which if set to Auto, would initiate a backup once an hour, causing SSD to tend towards hot. [My concern is that extensive use, causing SSD to be hot for extended periods, would diminish longterm reliability and lifespan.] ...When the SSD is disconnected, it cools down very, very quickly. I think it's fair to characterize I'm not using these SSDs as design intended (meaning, short-period connection & task), as these SSDs are intended for convenient, mobile backup of photos, videos, etc. and won't be connected (and used) for extended periods. I do recommend; but one must be aware about SSDs heating up. Nonetheless for 2TB of SSD space, this SanDisk model is a good value ...but, time will tell about longevity.

I purchased three of these to replace 2 LaCie Rugged HDs and one LaCie D2 because I've had them over 5 years and was worried about mechanical failure. SSDs have come down in price dramatically since I got the LaCie's so it was time to switch instead of waiting for them to fail. Works right out of the box, or you can format to your liking. The SanDisks are about the size of 2 stacked Graham Crackers, reduced a lot of clutter on my desk. They don't make any noise, are faster and cooler running. They're definitely portable, although that's not why I got them, they just stay home; I use these even smaller SSDs (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ZYNHDT4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) if I want to take files with me. I have them connected to a MacBook Pro - one for Time Machine, one for documents, and one for photos. (I don't store any files on the MacBook's SSD.) I purchased this drive after buying several Samsung T3 and T5 drives. I wanted to give SanDisk a shot given the price and my own history with their cards. Others have reported this drive gets very hot - I have not experienced that at all - I have so far used it to manage my 120GB photo library and transfer large amounts of data back and forth. I'm very pleased to this point. Speed testing shows this drive to be very slightly slower than the samsung for write speed and very slightly faster for read speed - really - the difference was 3-5 MB/S --> Not a lot of difference and still blazing fast. I got the 2TB model and got a great deal (for now) - it will be my primary travel drive - tons of space, tiny form factor, fast and so far (2 weeks in) very reliable with daily use.
