Real-World Performance: The Numbers Don't Lie The specs are impressive (up to 7,250 MB/s read), but the real-world results are what matter. Here’s what I saw after cloning my Windows 11 Pro installation and my main games over: Windows Boot Time: Cut from ~25 seconds to under 8 seconds. Game Load Times: Loading into my save file in Cyberpunk 2077 went from over 30 seconds to about 9 seconds. Levels in other demanding games load almost instantly. File Transfers: Moving a 100GB game folder from my old drive to this one took just a couple of minutes, a task that used to take over 15 minutes. The PCIe Gen 4 interface is the key here. Day-to-day use is incredibly snappy, and the drive doesn't slow down even when installing a huge game while running other programs, thanks to the Intelligent TurboWrite 2.0 cache. Installation & A Note on Heatsinks The M.2 2280 form factor made installation a breeze on my ASUS PRIME Z690-P motherboard. One of the main "cons" of this drive is that it doesn't include a heatsink. I upgraded from a 256 GB OEM Samsung NVMe drive to a budget 1 TB SSD, and finally to the Samsung 990 EVO Plus. The difference is immediately noticeable. My original OEM drive was responsive but limited in capacity, while the budget SSD I tried next offered more space but felt slower in everyday use due to higher latency and weaker random performance. The 990 EVO Plus is a clear improvement over both. Windows boots faster, applications open quickly, and the overall system feels smooth and consistent. Even without DRAM, this model handles small files, multitasking, and general OS work much better thanks to its optimized controller, TurboWrite cache, and HMB support. On a PCIe 3.0 system, it still reaches excellent speeds and maintains low latency. I bought this SSD for a fast external enclosure to use with my VMs and AI models. It works great, speed is quite good, and in fact basically maxes out the high speed port on my Mac Mini. It gets warm in the enclosure, but they all do, and I have not noticed any thermal throttling. Overall, at this price in this market, I am very pleased with this unit.

Samsung has it going with their drives, nearly every Samsung SSD or NVMe I've owned lasted well past it's designed life and usually keeps going until it's obsolete, this NVMe drive is fast, runs cool (usually between 30-50c, or 40-45c with heat sink), so far it seems durable & stable for the long haul (hopefully) and is backed by a 5-year warranty, I believe the write capacity is 1,200 TBW for the 2gb, which is plenty if you just write a game to it occasionally or store files that just sit there forever, but it should also have no problem handling active files and daily writes without too much impact. I was deciding this one, or the WB_Black series, but the Samsung has a bunch of features not found in many other brands, for example security features (automatic encryption (SED), TClass 0 (AES 256), TCG/Opal v2.0, MS eDrive (IEEE1667)) encryption, typically these features were in the pro models, but it was nice to see them trickle down to the plus line, all these features are important to me for data security, plus these drives are fast, support firmware updates, and can take advantage of 'over provisioning' to increase life of the drive even further. Going forward, I have recently decided to get NVMe drives now over conventional mechanical hard drives which in recent years seem to be made cheaply and have less and less warranty, where with NVMe storage size is getting comparable with 2-4 TB range, just large enough where a failure won't be too impactful (compared to a large 12-20 gig hard drive), not to mention the data speeds with NVMe is off the charts making backups a breeze, the small compact size and portable nature is also really nice as-well toss it in an enclosure and use it anywhere. Overall I highly recommend, drives are easy to install and compatible with a wide range of systems PCIe 2.0-5.0 (speed varies with PCIe generation), if your motherboard doesn't offer a built-in slot, PCI-E adapters or USB 3 enclosures are available if needed, of course if anything happens with this drive I will update my review but so far no issues.

I bought the Samsung 990 EVO Plus 4TB back in February for my MSI GL75 Leopard, which I originally bought years ago from Costco. It originally came with a 256GB Kingston SSD, and that eventually became a huge limitation once I got into video editing and started working with larger files. At one point I was down into the teens in available storage, which is what finally pushed me to upgrade. I honestly didn’t realize how bad it had gotten until Windows updates and normal day to day use basically left me out of space. At this point, storage isn’t just a convenience thing for me anymore. I rely heavily on SSD storage for my work, especially dealing with large 4K video files, project archives, exports, and footage backups. Running out of usable space in the middle of active work becomes a real problem fast, especially when projects start stacking up. A single project can eat through storage way quicker than people realize. I installed this as my main OS drive with a fresh Windows install, then reinstalled my applications and moved my editing projects over manually. I did try cloning the original drive first, but after troubleshooting it for a while and running into issues, I eventually gave up and went with a clean install instead. Looking back, that honestly ended up being the better and more stable option anyway. So far, I really haven’t had any performance issues with it. The biggest improvement wasn’t even just the speed, it was finally having enough storage space for the system to function normally again. No more constantly juggling files, deleting projects, or worrying about running out of storage in the middle of editing. For video editing specifically, it made the laptop feel usable again. I can keep footage, active projects, exports, and other files all on the same drive without constantly offloading things just to continue working. The speeds have felt fast enough for what I’m doing, but the real value for me was removing the storage bottleneck that had been slowing everything down. I also noticed the system feels more stable under heavier workloads now compared to before. Around the same time, I upgraded the laptop to 64GB of RAM and started using a Llano cooling pad, so the improvement isn’t entirely from the SSD alone, but the whole setup together definitely feels less strained under load than it used to. The only thing that really caught me off guard was the pricing change. I paid around $440 back in February, and seeing it jump close to $700 just a few months later is honestly hard to ignore. At the price I paid, it felt like a really strong upgrade. At the current pricing, I’d probably hesitate more before buying another one. I really don’t have any complaints about the drive itself though. It does exactly what it’s supposed to do and solved the biggest limitation I was dealing with.
