  • "She's fast enough for you, old man."
Capacity: 1TB Style: SSD ONLY
So. This SSD promises to be, well, ultra fast. Is it? In a word: Yes! First a little discussion - this is very much a gaming-focused SSD, complete with new custom firmware and an extremely quick controller. The custom firmware is based on Phison's I/O+ which Sabrent calls O2GO. It is ideal for gaming, especially for DirectStorage (more on which in a minute). Now, it goes without saying (or it should, anyway) that this is a Gen 4 drive, and a realistic test/review would be using this on a Gen 4 system. Even in an enclosure is a bit of an imprecise test, since there's so much in a USB-C chain that has to be correct. The version of the USB (Gen 1, or today called USB Gen 3.1) limits you to 5Gbps, which is well below what this drive is capable of. The enclosure itself also needs to support the SSD Gen 4. And so on. It WILL work in a Gen 3 system, but you won't get advertised speeds. Anyway. First things first. I couldn't care less about the box it comes in. I couldn't care less about the fancy sticker. Put it in a brown cardboard box for all I care. Whatevs. Now, a word about DirectStorage. It's a new API that's coming to Windows 11, but it's important to realize that it isn't released yet. So what we have here is a drive that WILL take advantage of DS 1.1 when it's released, and that has some interesting (and exciting) implications for DirectStorage SSDs. Installation is simple, no pitfalls. I will say though that while Sabrent "recommends" the use of a heatsink, the reality is that one is very much required. This generates heat, and heat diminishes the speed of the drive. The system itself is also a constraint (a thin laptop has a harder problem with thermals than a large case with lots of space for air circulation). But, that out of the way.... We're talking serious speed here. With all the constraints and such as mitigated as possible, I got 7Gbps sequential read and a bit over 6Gbps sequential write (see screenshot). While this is a bit below advertised speeds, it's not THAT much lower, and frankly if I tinkered more it would likely get up there. This is with the SSD directly on the motherboard (not an enclosure) with a fully modern Gen 4 slot and a fairly decent (but not league-leading) heatsink. So yes - in the words of Han Solo...she's fast enough for you, old man. Again though, to hammer home the point...without the requisite hardware and cooling...the drive's performance is wasted. Now then - I have two drives in my system, the other being a Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus. I'll say that they are mostly comparable (both have the newer 176 layer TLC) and raw speeds are generally comparable. To my way of thinking, the differences (besides $10 in the price as of this writing) is the O2GO firmware that optimizes this drive for gaming, or really anything that requires really rapid calls for high-end PCs. It's a waste for a gaming console, but for an upper tier gaming rig...this is fantastic. Last word on this rather lengthy review (and thanks for sticking with me here). After installation you really want to go to Sabrent's website and download a couple of things. First is the Sabrent Rocket Control Panel - this, despite looking like a basic rebadged version of Samsung Magician, will be the way you update firmware, monitor temperatures, and so on. The second is to download Acronis, which is a very handy tool provided by Sabrent for things like disk cloning (very handy if this is replacing a boot drive...). Both are free. So that's it. From where I sit, this offers performance that fits well in high end gaming computers, along with a very clear upgrade path with DirectStorage. Any consideration to the prettiness of the box is facile at best...what's important is how it works, and this one....works very well. ... show more

Easy to install, quick to setup and a beautiful case was provided. Games run much smoother on this nvme compared to my old 1tb nvme. No stutters and it's very fast for the money.

  • Only for gaming
Capacity: 2TB Style: SSD ONLY
I bought it for gaming only. I installed it in my: 2 TB SSD Acer Nitro 5, Ryzen 7, Nvidia GTX 3070, 32 GDDR5 and it really helps with the speed. Just make sure you buy the warranty because it has been my experience that SSD crash after so many uses. And 2 years is their max.

  • Best alternative to the Samsung 990 right now
Capacity: 2TB Style: SSD ONLY
I've always used Samsung for SSDs of all versions. That said, with the issues with the Samsung 990 series right now, I returned it and bought the Sabrent on the recommendation of a major integrator that uses them in their high end workstation builds. I'm now a Sabrent convert; this will now be my go to NVMe drive. Benchmarked out as advertised, and has run solid. ... show more

  • A very capable drive with a very gimmicky selling point
Capacity: 1TB Style: SSD ONLY
TLDR: this is the Rocket 4 Plus* with an even more custom firmware that claims to be better for DirectStorage API workloads that Microsoft is rolling out and making available to games. The hardware is otherwise similar to the Rocket 4 Plus non-G (which is an excellent SSD), but because of how new DirectStorage is, it might take some time for a games to take advantage of the technology, which means the whole selling point of this drive is, well, something you can't even take advantage of yet. *okay I technically lied, the Rocket 4 plus non-G technically uses other NAND types, such as Micron's 96-layer and Kioxia's 112-layer NAND (from what I've read in the reviews for the non-G drive) in addition to the Micron 176-layer NAND. Longer version: (Disclaimer: I lost my CrystalDiskMark results but the performance I got using CrystalDiskMark matches to what I've seen in reputable reviews such as ones from TomsHardware) This drive, is basically Sabrent's Rocket 4 Plus with even more custom firmware that optimizes for DirectStorage, which is part of Microsoft's DirectX API that basically allows games to read data off of drives faster while using less system resources. The hardware is still the same as the Rocket 4 Plus non-G, using the same Phison E18 controller and 176-layer Micron TLC NAND. Now, technically the Rocket 4 Plus non-G uses other NAND in addition to Micron's 176-layer, so it's not exactly a direct comparison depending on which Rocket 4 Plus non-G. The last time I bought a Sabrent SSD was their PCIE Gen 3 Rocket, and it turns out between then and now Sabrent's moved to using some very fancy packaging not only on their memory but also their SSDs. The drive is packaged with a metallic box inside a paper outer box, it's very fancy to the point it feels excessive. I mean you can probably reuse the box to store some small things (it's about the right size to store mints, although that might not be the best idea). The top sticker looks very pretty, which is very unfortunate because you'll probably be keeping this under a heatsink to keep the drive cool. The 1TB is single-sided, I'm not sure if the other capacities are however. BTW, you probably need to be using a heatsink for this drive. Flagship Gen 4 NVME SSDs need ample cooling, and this is definitely no exception. It did do okay when I ran it on my Asrock X570 Steel Legend, where the heatsink kept it I think below 55C during a stress test. Sabrent actually includes a warning on the packaging to suggest that you use some sort of additional cooling for this drive. If you're using this in a laptop, just make sure there's some sort way that's conducting the heat away from the drive (thermal pad, maybe the laptop has an integrated heatsink, etc.). The main problem I have with this is less of the price but more of the "feature". I'm not concerned about the price "because Sabrent's launch prices are always pretty high up and drop down over time", I say that in quotes though because some of Sabrent's products may not adjust to the market that accordingly... The whole selling point of this drive is that it's "optimized for DirectStorage workloads", which no games take advantage of so far on PC. I mean, both the latest Xbox series X and PS5 have some kind of DirectStorage implemented (it's not called that in PlayStation), but this drive is intended for the PC market which there are no games that implement DirectStorage yet. This makes the whole selling point more or less a gimmick. I mean sure, you won't go wrong with getting this drive for a PC/laptop, the performance is excellent and it should also be PS5 compatible, but it feels like it's trading that gimmicky-selling point for a very high price. At the time of this review, a 1TB will set you back $170, the 2TB $300 and the 4TB $800. A Solidigm P44 Pro (which is a SK Hynix P41 Platinum w/ some optimizations) at the time of this review is $130 for 1TB and $220 for 2TB (do keep in mind that the P41 Platinum did go as low as $110 for 1TB and $170 for 2TB). The price of this drive at the time of this review is more comparable with Samsung's recently launched 990 Pro, which is $170 for 1TB and $305 for 2TB, but that's arguably a better-performing SSD with better efficiency than this drive (although technically less than the P44). This means for the same money, you can either buy "the best" PCIE Gen 4 NVME SSD in the form of Samsung's 990 Pro, save some money and get better performance and best-efficiency in the form of SK Hynix's P41/Solidigm P44, or save a lot more money and get something like a XPG S70 Blade. The thing about these SSDs is that they're flagship PCIE Gen 4 NVME SSDs, and you probably won't feel any of the differences in daily use. In the end, I can't recommend against it because it is an excellent drive with great performance (and a cool looking box), but I feel like it's price is affected by its selling point and its selling point feels like a gimmick at the time of this review. Maybe when DirectStorage becomes more implemented by games from game developers, who knows, maybe this drive will blow away everything else. However 1) DirectStorage hasn't been implemented that much yet and 2) these drives have such good performance I doubt the custom firmware of this drive would make that much of a difference anyways. ... show more
