  • Read if cloning hard drive
Capacity: 1TB
This drive is very fast and install was easy. This is down in the weeds a bit, but an important note is that it uses 4k byte sectors and has no 512 byte emulation (512e). This minor detail cost me 12+ hours of trying to figure out how to make the drive work with what I needed to do with it (clone and encrypt my OS). For clean installs, this should not be a problem. Cloning a hard drive is a problem, however, because you will need to have cloning software that can convert 512 byte sectors to 4k sectors, and even then, the cloning software may not be able to convert the boot partition (which happened to me), which will result in it being impossible to boot your computer. Most modern hard drives have 4k physical sectors (like this one) but emulate 512 byte sectors for compatibility purposes (some programs still are only compatible with 512 byte sectors). This drive does not emulate, which causes the above-mentioned issues. If doing a clean install of Windows, the drive should be fine and is very fast, but cloning did not work for me. Be aware that there may be other compatibility issues with programs, however. My laptop is less than one year old and has a SATA SSD, so this doesn't just affect traditional hard drives. As a side note, the lack of 512e may also affect the encryption and backup of your hard drive. Popular encryption software VeraCrypt only supports 512 byte sectors, and I could not get Bitlocker to work properly after a clean install of Windows using this hard drive (could have been user error, but I worked on it for a few hours). I decided to send the drive back so I did not attempt to back up the hard drive, but it is also possible that the lack of 512e would also affect the ability to back up this hard drive to another hard drive with 512e, even if the backup drive has 4k physical sectors. Just do your homework on these issues before purchasing the drive. ... show more

  • Warning, Sabrent has quietly changed design
Capacity: 1TB
This was fulfilled by amazon although the invoice clearly states sold by store4pc which is a Sabrent channel parter / distributer. The product is clearly not genuine as confirmed by Sabrent Tech support. They don't use Kensington chipsets, they use a Phishon controller and toshiba chipset. EDIT.. several days later this changed, see end of review. the card behaved strangely and poor performance, less than 1/3 rated speed. investigated further and found the card was running 512e not the native 4k nor was SMART available. that was red flag 1 placed the drive in windows10 and used sabrents software to format to 4k, it kept telling me after reboots re-running the software that it was still 512e. put it back in my other platform and it was indeed telling me it was running 4k but performance still was nowhere near spec. removed device from the heatsink and examined, you can clearly see that the chipset does not match the mfg photos. The kingston controller is not covered by the label, and the P HL chip by the pci-e notch is not there.. the layout of the entire board is not spec. sent photos to the mfg that confirmed the drive as counterfeit .. buyer beware ..... EDIT Sabrent technical called me back several days later and confirmed that manufacturing has changed the specification and design of the product and did bother to tell anyone, even the tech support at Sabrent as I stated, if you compare the chip layout paying specific attention to the resistors and cache chip by the pci-e connector.. you can see that it does not match the picture posted here on amazon by the Mfg. Further, if you look at the photo of the 3 reference layouts for Phison, you will notice that the card on the right, the reference E12 layout is what the Mfg advertises it uses, however if you look at the photo of the part that I received, it more closely resembled the E8 layout from 2017. I did not even get the E8 level of performance out of the drive. photos dont lie. the Mfg changed the specification, or their mfg faculty could not keep up with demand and are re-branding old stock in the hope the consumer doest notice. This is becoming all too typical with tech companies, release a product, get too reviews, then change the design specification to make it cheaper at the cost of performance without notifying the customer... its a bait and switch can't recommend Sabrent products at this time, until the company steps up... but be wary of what is advertised or specified on Sabrents website might not be the product you get in the end. ... show more

  • 6 drives, 50% DOA rate (updated 5/28/19, now 67% are dead)
Capacity: 2TB
bought a 2TB model and 5 1TB models for office use. the 2TB models worked fine. the first 1TB drive would not get detected in any system, not even seen in the BIOS. 2 other 1TB drives kept going corrupt during windows 10 install. only 3 worked, but only for 1 week so far. will be returning the 3 dead ones and never buying this brand again. they obviously cut corners somewhere. Exactly 2 months after i started using these, one of the 1TB just croaked. no warning, just stopped powering on. it was used in a Dell precision workstation (in use 50-60 hours a week running CAD and photo editing software) that stopped detecting this morning. tried it in other computer, no dice. completely dead. the current dead count is 4 out of 6. ... show more

  • Ok, Initial Thoughts ... WOW ... And they continue ...
Capacity: 2TB
So a couple things, I bought this to upgrade my m.2 SSD (Samsung OEM) 512GB that was in my Razer 2017 14". As someone else noted, BUYER BEWARE because this is a 4k byte size allocation versus the standard 512 byte setup. That means you CANNOT DIRECTLY CLONE THE DRIVE UNLESS IT IS A 4K DRIVE AS WELL. I saw that post and should have read it more closely but of course, I 'knew' better ... yeah would have saved me like 48 hours of headaches. So does that mean you cannot move your stuff over? Nope it just means it takes a bit more work. I had to image my existing drive to an external drive (USB), create a bootable Windows PE disc with the imaging software, install the new drive, boot into Windows PE and then restore the image from the image file. If you do that, it will work flawlessly (though it will take QUITE awhile). Speed tests so far are phenomenal. Arbitrarily it is loading into Windows faster. DEFINITELY loads into Division 2 faster. Transferring of files seems snappier and encoding definitely is probably 2x faster. Overall VERY happy with my purchase, but like I said ... this takes a bit of work. Now we all will eventually have to upgrade to this style anyway so I guess I have future proofed myself at this point. Toodles everyone ... show more
