Description

Defender Security U 9560 Brass Lock and Door Reinforcer assists in preventing forced entry by reinforcing the weak spot of an entry door. It can be used to reinforce and repair both metal and wood doors. Made of solid brass construction, the lock reinforcer plate comes finished in brassl. All the necessary mounting hardware is included for a quick and easy installation. The lock reinforcement plate is pre-punched for mounting. The reinforcer is designed for 1-3/4 inch thick doors that have mortise or drive-in latches. It features two 2-1/8 inch bores that are 3-5/8 inch on center, with 2-3/8 inch backsets. The door reinforcer is non-recessed. Please refer to the line art drawing for dimensions and compare to your needs before purchasing (Not Universal).

While the Prime-Line U 9537 Lock and Door Reinforcer is primarily marketed for security, I purchased it for a different, yet equally important, reason: protecting my door from constant abuse. Specifically, I wanted a durable plate to act as a barrier against dirty hand prints and scuffs, particularly those left by my kids near the handle. I am delighted with the result. The plate installed easily and looks fantastic, it blends seamlessly with the hardware and gives the door a clean, finished appearance. After many months of heavy use and daily contact, the area covered by the reinforcer has completely shielded the original paint. My newly painted door still looks fantastic and has zero scuff marks or smudges where the plate is installed. This small investment has saved me from constant cleaning and potential touch-ups.     • Fairly decent reinforcement for 5-1/2" spaced locks

This review is for a U-9537 Lock & Door Reinforcer sold by Gladden Unlimited. Received the product ordered, unopened and undamaged. I used it to re-inforce an (undamaged) metal-skinned door. These reinforcers should be used in combination with a security strike plate. Metal skin doors are particularly vulnerable to kick-in, as the wood from the edge only extends into the door about one inch. When you pull out the lock all you will see is foam insulation because the wood doesn't make it that far. To top it off, the hole bored for the latch bolt/s leaves you with hardly any wood at those points, making for a very weak spot. Beware there are different "standards" for the spacing between the door locks. This particular model is for 5-1/2 inch hole spacing (distance between bolt centers). It's a mystery to me why this amazon page does not list this critical measurement. I had to check the manufacture's web site to verify which model to buy. Other hole spacing available from the same manufacturer are 3-5/8" and 6". There are 14 different double-lock kits in all for a variety of hole and backset spacing. Check the manufacture's web site for the complete list of measurements and colors at: defender-security.net Unfortunately they do not offer it in white. The installation was mostly painless. I was able to get the door to shut without shaving down the edge of the door. The instructions recommend using a wood file to remove 1/32" from the edge of the door if it will not close with the reinforcer on. That should be doable, but you can't file down the mounting plates of the latch bolts, so how this is supposed to work is another mystery. There might be enough play in the inner works to let them sink in 1/32, but you would likely have to spend some time doing careful chiseling to allow that to happen. Because the metal skin of these doors typically does not extend all the way to the edge, with the wood core protruding about 1/8" more, the door insulation was displaced at the the top and bottom edges of the reinforcer. It pushes on the insulation more than the door does. End result was daylight seen from the inside at those points. Carefully making partial slits in the insulation at those points improved the seal greatly. Since the plate wraps around the door it essentially bypasses the core insulation, and I can tell it conducts some cold in. I don't think there's any way to help this; trading a little bit of insulation efficiency for increased security seems required with these doors. It remains to be seen how effective this is, but of course I hope it's never put to the test. I'd rather see this with much thicker metal, but that would require extensive door mods to accommodate.
