  • Worth it!
This can be difficult to deep clean, but it really doesn’t need to be deep cleaned that often as long as you make sure to dump the drawer everyday and change out the litter regularly. I’ve went months without taking it apart to clean it fully. It is pretty heavy, but it doesn’t take up an unreasonable amount of space. I have it in a corner by my trashcan. Depending on the type of litter, there isn’t much of a smell unless it has just been used. I use Dr. Elsey’s litter. A hard clumping litter definitely works best. Don’t overfill it or you will lose a lot of litter that ends up in the drawer. I don’t go by the percentages shown in the app or on the screen as I’ve not found them to be accurate. I just look at it to check the level isn’t below the minimum. There is a scented spray that’s included that sprays periodically and that seems to work well as I hardly ever notice a smell until it runs out. One bottle of the spray lasts months. I had this 10 months and there was a power failure. At first it wouldn’t turn on at all. After a few hours, it turned back on but the screen wouldn’t work. The box worked as normal but I couldn’t see any of the settings on the screen. I contacted PETKIT and they sent me a brand new one within a couple of weeks. It wasn’t a difficult process to get the replacement and the customer service was excellent. They also didn’t ask that I ship the broken one back which is awesome since it technically still works for the most part, so I can keep it as a backup if I ever need one. The app for this could definitely use some upgrades, but I don’t really use it anyway. Do we really need an app for everything? Just dump the waste out daily and pay attention to the amount of litter in the box. I do keep the app to force it to do an extra clean or spray extra air freshener and it works fine for that. The sensors work VERY well, and it will stop whatever it’s doing when the kitties walk up. At first they were curious and would poke their heads in when it started to clean to see what was happening. It stops immediately as soon as they are in range. I never worry about them being hurt by it like I’ve seen happen with some of the other self-cleaning litter boxes. All in all, this is 100% worth the money. I can’t imagine going back to the “easy clean” rolling litter box or scooping. ... show more

  • This thing is complete garbage
Keep in mind throughout this review that we have also had another brand of self-cleaning litter box for two years prior to buying this one and have had zero issues with the other brand. We've had this unit for under 1.5 years. I hate this thing with the intensity of 1000 suns. The Petkit X has been more of a pain than it's worth since the day we bought it and it just keeps getting worse. Its never been reliable. It's forever complaining about something that keeps it from cycling. It requires power cycles sometimes to get it working again. About 1% of the time, it will actually tell us the collection bin is full and the other 99% of the time, it stops mid-cycle and tells us there's a cat in the box. When you remove the full collection bin, it's so full that the clumps scrape across the front collection bin sensors and unless you clean them, it won't stop saying the bin is full. The only way to clean them is to get your arm under there and get nasty waste litter all over your hands and wrists. Also, when it scrapes off while removing the bin, used litter gets all over the floor under it. Because of the "cat in the box" error, when you remove the full bin, it will start to rotate because it no longer thinks there's a cat in the box and depending on where it was stopped, it will dump litter on the floor if you don't pause it fast enough. At one point it wouldn't stop saying that a cat has entered the litter box. I had to totally tear it down and I found litter all over inside the chassis that was throwing off the weight sensors. You have to remove the lid to fill it which I don't have to do with the other one. It's also a pain to clean because there's always stuck litter inside the chassis and on the under side. The deodorizing unit inside failed and it took them forever to replace it under warranty. It also continually tells us the deodorizer is empty when it's not. If you happen to over fill it a little with fresh litter, the first time it cycles it will dump the excess litter all over the place inside and in the collection bin, wasting fresh litter. Now, the rubber insert that holds the clean litter is ripped in three spots toward the front. This rubber insert is way thinner than the rubber insert in the other brand litter box we have. After contacting Petkit, they requested pictures. Fine. Then they requested a video. A video of what? Are the rips intermittent? Do they only happen sometimes? After all that, they told us they wouldn't replace it because it was out of warranty and instead, told us that a replacement cat litter pad for the Petkit Max would fit, so we bought one. Well, the pad from the Max doesn't fit. It's not the same shape and there's nothing in the X to hold the pad from the Max in place. So now we have to return that and meanwhile, the rips in the rubber insert are still there to dump litter all over the place inside the unit if we use it. I'm going to have to tape it or something and hope it holds because we can't buy replacement parts as far as we can tell. As of right now, we have a $500 plastic toy for the cats to play in. Don't buy the Petkit X. Go with the other brand. Update as of 4/29/2023: The deodorizer has stopped working again. The wires at the piezo sprayer have broken again; same problem as the last one. The deodorizing liquid corrodes the wires away and they break. I re-soldered and it still won't work. I connected an oscilloscope to the wires and there's no output from the board inside the unit. At this point, I would love the satisfaction of throwing this thing out of an airplane at 5,000 feet and watching it smash into a million bits. Then collect all the bits and send it all to Petkit. UPDATE 9/18/2023: This thing has completely lost it's mind at this point. At 12:30 AM today, it started cycling. And cycling. And cycling. It never stops. It just goes round and round forever. It's like the song that never ends, except in kitty litter box form. No amount of power cycling, resetting, disassembling, or anything stops it. Plug it in, it sits for about a minute, then just starts cycling forever. The app doesn't show it's cycling at all. If I could give this thing negative 10 stars, it still wouldn't be a low enough score. ... show more
