  • It's a Winco 40QT pot
I brew 5 gallon batches of beer and make huge pots of soups and stews with this thing. The lid fits great. It's a heavy pot and I consider that a plus. To make my final decision on what 10 gallon stainless steel pot I was going to buy, I looked at the shipping weights and picked the heaviest one. The handles are attached well and it feels very secure while lifting 9.5 gallons of liquid. The only thing that bothered me is when I tilt the pot (while empty) I can hear a small piece of something rattling around the inside of the clad bottom. I didn't mark off a star for that but I didn't know the bottom had a hollow void. It's very bottom heavy and if the rattle wasn't there, I wouldn't have known. It takes a bit of power to heat all that metal up but the even heat distribution is nice. I have a 100,000btu propane burner that I use while brewing beer. I use the "Brew In A Bag" (BIAB) method and have never scorched or melted my bags or mash. If you are thinking about brewing 5 gallon all grain batches using the BIAB method, I would go with a larger pot. You can use this one, and I do, but a larger pot would have been better. Because of the water displacement of the grain; when I brew high gravity beers I can't add all of the water from the start (along with all of the grain). Around 15 gallons would be luxurious for that application but I make it work and it works well. But onto soups and stews... The pot has a stout stance that works well on top of a stove top. Because the pot has a wide circumference and shorter height, the height makes it easy to work inside the pot without needing a step stool. I do wish that the pot was more finely polished but at this price you really can't complain too much. I have a new but inexpensive stove and this pot really pushes the BTUs to the limit. I have my heat on full blast and it's just enough. Works well but I don't think I could use a larger pot without having to upgrade my stove top to a more powerful model. I bought it because I believed it was the most pot I could buy at this price range (Sounds like a cheech and chong movie quote). And after using it for a couple of months, I still believe that it is the best deal for what I wanted. Clad bottom, stainless steel, riveted handles, heavy and stout. Oh one other thing to consider, it's probably too wide to fit into your sink. ... show more

  • Qaulity large pot - recommended
This is a quality LARGE pot. It fits over two burners on our Kenmore Gas range which is nice so that I can run two burners on medium. This has a THICK heavy bottom which really helps prevent scorching. We had 30 quarts of tomato juice simmering in this pot for 9 hours as we boiled it down and thickened it for homemade spaghetti sauce. This pot worked wonderfully for that and didn't scorch over the burners like thin bottomed pots do. The handles seem sturdy, though I don't know that I would want to move this if it was full. I'm sure the handles would be fine, but the pot is so large that it would very heavy and be awkward to carry if the weight caused you to have to carry down near your legs. For cleaning, as this will not fit in most sinks, we took it outside after scrubbing with soap and a srcubby in the counter and used the hose to clean it out and rinse it off. Seemed to work fine. We also boiled a turkey in this pot. A 22lb turkey fit just about right though I'm sure a larger one would fit just fine too, we shredded and canned the turkey meat as well as the broth. If you were going to boil chickens I would imagine you could get about 10 in the pot. I took off one star as out pot was slightly damaged during shipping, it seems that the pot is now oblong shaped instead of round and the lid doesn't fit very well anymore. In fact, when we first got it it wouldn't fit at all. I put my arms around the pot and squeezed and stretched the inside edges with my hands to get the lid to fit. It fits now but is VERY tight at two points, and loose at two others due to the slight oval shaping. The shipping box was in fine condition though, so its possible the pot just came this way with no shipping damage? Anyways thats the explination for 4 stars. I'm sure amazon would have taken it back but I didn't have the time to wait as the tomatos were on and being juiced when I purchased and I don't feel right sending back a used pot. ... show more

  • Appears to be a good pot, but be aware of quality control and handling abuse
This stock pot arrived fine and works fine as a stock pot. I'm using this item along with an outdoor propane cooker for making large stews and boiled peanuts. While the item will work fine as received, I did see some clear signs of abuse and poor quality control, which likely occurred at the factory. I was looking inside the pot and noticed an inward dent where the bottom of the pot curves into the pot's side. I looked at the same place on the outside of the pot, and there was an obvious strike point where the bottom clad and the pot bottom joined. Even the edge of the clad piece was dented. It looks like the bottom edge of the pot was either struck with a hammer or banged against the edge of a hard work surface based on the shape of the dent. This was a hard strike that likely did not occur after the pot was packed because a hit this hard to this small of an area would have left a visible indication on the box, and the box was fine. There were other small scuffs and scrapes on the stainless, but it's very difficult to find pristine stainless on a pot this big. While I don't intend to send this back, future purchasers should be aware that (like other reviewers have mentioned) the quality control and abuse factor is in-line with what we've come to expect these days. The pot should cook fine, but I gave only 4 stars for the quality control issue. ... show more
