This is a good model for a starter. I can tell it cannot sense very deep but lots of stuff can be found in the shallows. It will make you want to spend more money on a professional unit. The pic of items included shows a pile of gold, I didn't get the gold. Seriously, I am ticked off the item showed up much cheaper right after I bought mine. This is a great beginner to intermediate model. It does everything a beginner would want. And is good enough to compete with the more expensive models. It has great sensor recovery speed and it discriminates very well. From my research the more expensive doesn't mean better. I've had this one for a month. It will pick up a nickel at 8" underground. It can sense a bb at only one inch or touching, kind of a bummer there but it's small and hard to read, but it will find most of what you're looking for. Do your research and come back to this one . It will let you get into metal detecting without breaking the bank. If you like the hobby get a nicer one with more control or bells and whistles. Or discover enough treasure to buy another one, this would be a great back up. The only real disappointment here is it's not made in the USA. I wanted the bounty hunter tracker 4 but the two tone function of this one pushed me to this one. Bounty hunter should copy this functionality. ... show more

Story: When I was a tiny human, I often thought "How cool would it be to walk around using radio frequencies to locate and extract precious metals from the soil?" Turns out the answer to that question is "Meh". Being an adult with bills to pay and not a lot of reason to spend a ridiculous amount of money on some NASA certified gadget that tells me what minute percentage of nickel alloy lies 6 inches below the surface, I found this. It does this reasonably well if you learn how to use it. I bought it to locate garbage under the soil that may rise up and smite my lawnmower. To that extent, it works great. I have also found coins and some jewelry. Tons of garbage, chains, pop cans, chip bags, nails, zippers, buttons, tools. I think if you are a hobbyist that is happy with learning how things work and don't know if you are going to like a new hobby, this would be a reasonable starter. I think if you are familiar with the hobby and already know you are going to spend a lot of time doing it, you may want to spend a little more. This was my second attempt at a metal detector. The first was one from a brick n mortar store which ended up as a return, and thus landed me on Amazon looking at reviews and trying to make an informed decision. Searching through the multitude of metal detectors, the conflicting reviews (on all of them) made it difficult. Please know that there is a science behind metal detecting, based on your settings, and what type of metal the device is actually detecting, so it's important to understand how to adjust the settings and practice with coins and other metal that you find around your house before going out to the field... this is important. Once you practice with the different metals and settings, you will learn the "personality" of your detector which you apply directly to your success in the field. The directions for this device were straight forward and easy to follow. Putting the device together was a breeze, but note: it requires 2 9 volt batteries to function, so make sure you have them on hand. There was a slight discrepancy in the directions which lead to my earlier comment about the personality of the the machine.... I noticed on my machine that the disc setting to ignore iron the disc knob had to be @ 1:00 not 11:00, nickel was 2:00 not 12:00, zinc 4:00. Once I figured this out the device became a much easier to operate. The device was a little heavy for a 6 year old long and cumbersome - my eight year old however could use it. But quite honestly they had more fun digging in the dirt hunting the treasure detected by the machine. We took it camping with us last weekend, the picture shows some of the junk and not so junk we found in the soil around the campsite. It's certainly added an element of adventure to our trip as it seemed like we are on a treasure hunt. Maybe it was buried in the description, (pun intended) but the item also comes with a little steel army like shovel that you put together, it certainly aided in the digging process of looking for what was beneath the soil. Honestly I was on the fence on either getting this one or the popular "science magazine" version which was about 2xs the $$. I'm glad I chose this one.
