I’m a novice at self coloring. Now, in my early 40’s my biggest pain point is stubborn grays that are framing my face (mostly) and throughout my hairline. The goal for me was to color my root growth & I had to enlist the help of my 14 year old to work the back half section through because I couldn’t see what I was doing. The goal for me was to extend the time between salon visits. Overall, it was good but recommend you asking your salon colorist which hue you need (ash or red). This matters a lot for blending purposes. For example; I chose “ash” mistakenly when I should have chose “red”. It’s not noticeable to the general public but to me I see the differences. I’m sure my colorist will notice but she’ll be able to fix when I do my whole head coloring in a month. For reference: I need to do root touch ups every 2 weeks. This bought me about a month before I have to schedule my salon appointment, so I’d be going to the salon every 6 weeks vs. every 2. PSA: the smell wasn’t pleasant; I smelled like I smoked a pack of unfiltered cigarettes.

This is the one and only box color I’ll use on my hair. Outside of a professional salon, nothing else compares to Madison Reed’s ease of use, overall quality, stubborn grey coverage, natural yet radiant color, shine, and kindness to my hair. Oh…and no eyewatering smell. The price is more than reasonable for all this, too. I’m very picky about believable, rich haircolor and at this point I’ve pretty much tried them all, including some regrettable decisions. Live and learn! Madison Reed is, again, the ONLY box color I’ll use if I’m not going to the salon. No, it’s not balayage or highlights. Yes, it does look good and have loads of life—it’s not ever dull, flat or harsh-looking (all of which look cheap). If you have any questions about getting your Madison Reed color right, or aren’t satisfied, call them. They’re great. If you have any real issues it’s probably your hair (overprocessed or too damaged to begin with, or straying too far from the correct color). (I haven’t gotten anything for free and haven’t been compensated for this review. It’s my honest opinion.)

I purchase Madison Reed color in 5N Torino brown to cover grays. The color is the perfect match to my natural dark brown color. It does not give me red/orange brassy undertones. It’s a beautiful natural chocolate brown. The mix does not irritate my scalp and is very gentle, no awful Oder. The kit gives you everything you need properly color your hair at home. Barrier cream, clean up wipes, gloves etc. I used to order this color through the Madison Reed website, but they ship so slowly, it often took 2 weeks to get my product. Amazon sells it for the same price and ships quickly! It’s a win win! Once you try Madison Reed, you won’t use any other color.

I used Light Golden Red, &7NCG, Genova Red. On the package, the color looked like an exact match for my original hair color. (I have just enough grey, here & there throughout my hair, to want to cover it... for now, anyway. Vanity... right? lol ) I fell in love with Madison Reed's packaging and the thoughtfulness shown in this very complete hair color kit. The messaging in it dazzled me, as well. Using the product, I didn't care for the smell of it, but it wasn't nearly as bad as some ammonia-based hair color products. So far, so good. In addition, I was impressed by how much hair color was included. Even with long, thick hair, I was able to cover everything from the roots to the very longest tips of my hair, and do so completely. The included shampoo and conditioner were both lavish and generous. Again, as someone with very thick hair, this was appreciated. But then, fresh from the shower, I looked in the mirror. Umm... It looked like the color coverage wasn't consistent. Not even close. Worse, when my hair was dry, the color at the top of my head was spectacular, but starting at about ear level, the color was much darker. Indoors, it looks almost black. On someone as fair-skinned as me, the effect was jarring. Suddenly, every freckle and laugh line seemed more obvious. This was NOT flattering. Oddly, the ends of my hair barely took any color at all. That was fine, because naturally colored hair is usually lighter (sun bleached) at the ends. In the accompanying photo, my head is tilted, so I'm looking up. You're seeing the top of my head as well as my back. Also, that picture was taken on a slightly overcast day, so the variations in color aren't due to extreme lighting. It looks far worse indoors, but I think the photo conveys the essense of the problem. Note: It's been a few years since I was a hair model, but I picked up a lot of hair coloring tips from the pros. So, I'm still mindful of the importance of coloring my hair thoroughly and consistently, and following package directions - to the letter - for the best results. In other words, it's not as if I smothered the top of my head with hair dye, and just loosely spread the rest of my hair with far lighter coverage. Likewise, I didn't douse the middle (now darkest) band of my hair with extra color, or omit coloring the ends, either. To me, it looks like this hair color should not be used on long, previously colored hair. I'd ask for a refund if I had anything to return to the seller, but - of course - I used the complete package. So, at best, that was a waste of $30. I'm going to wait a week so my hair has time to recover, and then I'll be using an "oops!" products to remove the Madison Reed hair color. Fingers crossed, it'll restore how my hair looked before using Madison Reed's hair color. (If that doesn't work, Plan B is to streak my hair with blonde. At worst, it'll look "artsy.") I'll agree that the Madison Reed hair color at the top of my head looks exactly as I'd hoped. It's very close to the color shown on the product's packaging. The probem is: The rest of my hair looks awful. If your hair is short - and, preferably, has never been colored before - you may love Madison Reed. For me, this was an extremely distressing experience. Fortunately, I work at home. This week, only my family will see my hair. If I go out, I'll wear a hat. Then, my hair will look oddly dark with almost blonde sun-bleaching at the ends. Short-term, I'm okay with that. I was tempted to give this product two stars because the packaging was a delight to read, and the included gloves, cap, shampoo, and conditioner were wonderful extras. However, I'm so disappointed by the product itself, I have to give this one star, and share my experience with others, so they don't make a similar mistake.

I purchased the product in the shade Pescara Black Pros - 90% grey coverage - Leaves hair super shiny and smooth - Gorgeous shade, multidimensional for a black hair color. Super deep without pulling blue or looking witchy. - Comes with a guard cream and wipe, and two pairs of gloves. Good to do some bathroom cleaning while you wait. It also comes with a cap. - The shampoo and conditioner are awesome. I wish I could purchase them separately. Cons - I actually wished it had a scent. Its almost scentless, but the little remaining scent there is is not particularly pleasant Overall will settle with this brand and stop exploring, even if the price is almost twice as other box brands, it is definitely worth it.
