  • Fast and Reliable. What More Can You Ask For?
I purchased this 2TB Rugged after struggling over whether or not to buy a solid state external hard drive. But after doing the usual Internet research, visiting the LaCie web site, reading reviews on Amazon.com and speaking with a few more-tech-savvy-than-me friends -- as well as trying to justify the price for a 1TB solid state model -- I decided to stay with a mechanical drive but take advantage of Thunderbolt technology that came with my new MacBook Pro. I've been using this LaCie Rugged Thunderbolt hard drive for about a month, and after using it to store primarily back-ups of my photos, music and videos, haven't experienced any problems at all. I've only used the built-in Thunderbolt wire to connect it to my MacBook Pro Retina, and overall performance and upload speeds have exceeded my expectations "right out of the box." As with other LaCie Ruggeds I've used in the past -- and am still using -- this Thunderbolt version was a snail to install and start using with a Mac. As mentioned in some of the online reviews, the unit itself gets a little bit warm during extended periods of use, but definitely not hot. And using care not to stretch or twist the attached Thunderbolt cable, I haven't had any problems at all with my connections. Overall, this particular 2TB model seems just as well made and reliable as all of the previous LaCie Rugged versions I've purchased and used over the past 15 years... only a lot faster thanks to the Thunderbolt connection. ... show more

  • Great External Option for Sluggish Macs
Capacity: 1TB Style: USB 3.0
I work in an office where IT support for Macs is limited to say the least. A coworker recently ran into an issue where their iMac had slowed down pretty badly due to lack of disk space (under 50GB) bc of Dropbox synced folders/files. Projects varied by day, so selective syncing wasn't a great option, and IT wasn't about to pay for Apple or another business to upgrade the internal hard drive. I wasn't about to start removing the glass and monitor of a company computer, so I Googled for some trusted thunderbolt external hard drives. I found a lot of positive reviews for the 1TB thunderbolt LaCie, and I have to say it worked like a dream – Dropbox synced GBs of data fairly quickly for an external drive, and the iMac is back up running like new. Went out and bought my own 1TB thunderbolt LaCie for the MacBook at home. ... show more

  • Fantastic for video editing on my MacBook
I use this handy little drive to store my iPhoto library and old FCPX project libraries. It has been handy, rugged, and performed flawlessly for me for the past 5 months. I use a late 2013 MacBook Pro and a Panasonic GH4 to shoot 4K video. In my video projects, I use 1080p b-roll that is stored on the LaCie and it works great with no lag. When I'm finished with a video project, I archive the library on the LaCie. File transfers are fast and the thing is so handy to use because there is no power cord. Now I've got a monster video project coming up, and I'm buying two more of these drives to store the original video, and also to store the proxy media that I will use during the edit. Love these drives! ... show more

  • Great Drive, Should Be a Little Cheaper
I've owned a LaCie Rugged before. I bought this because my new Mac doesn't have Firewire and — rather than getting a Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter for my old drive — I wanted to take advantage of the full Thunderbolt speed. The drive is nice. Standard LaCie Rugged, if you're familiar with them. It provides a level of comfort knowing that you don't have to be overly delicate with the unit when it's not in use. My favorite feature with this is that the Thunderbolt cable is built in and fits integrally into the rubber bumper. I won't miss having to keep track of a separate cable or rubber-band it to the drive. Regarding speed, I'm sure it's there but my application for the drive isn't taking full advantage of it. I'm using it as a dedicated Time Machine drive, so there's a bunch of processing slowing the information transfer down. The one issue I have is price, and it's enough of an issue to knock off a star. I'm all for things being priced appropriately, even if the price is high. At long as the value of the item matches the price, I wouldn't take off a star. In this case I think they're taking advantage of the LaCie name plus the use of the Thunderbolt cable, and are hiking the price. You can get 1TB external drives for $80, to the $180 I paid for this. Sure, it's a LaCie Rugged, so that would make $100-120 a fair range. Add the Thunderbolt and I can see $140-150. $180 is really pushing it but — as I'm sure they're counting on — I wanted this configuration and this was the only one to get, so I paid it. ... show more

  • and it has been perfect for my files and backup
Capacity: 1TB Style: USB 3.0
I received this external drive as a gift, and it has been perfect for my files and backup. The connection to a Macbook Pro is simple and speedy with Thunderbolt, and it gives you the option to set up space for files you wish to be compatible with a PC as well. The customization potential is a very nice feature. I also really like the cover: it protects the drive and holds the Thunderbolt connection cord. I'd definitely recommend this product. ... show more

  • Fantastic hard drive!
Capacity: 1TB Style: USB 3.0
FAST little HD. I've used it to transfer data from my 13" MacBook Pro using both Thunderbolt and USB 3 and the speed isn't very impressive. The integrated thunderbolts cable make it so easy to store in a laptop bag without a spaghetti of cables floating around. Just unwrap the cable and plug it in! Still blows my mind that 1TB can fit in such a small package considering the technology a decade ago. Killer HD! ... show more

  • Very Fast!
Capacity: 1TB Style: USB 3.0
Incredibly fast! Use this to store footage and video software save files. The extra storage and fast data transfers have greatly sped up my workflow. Would even recommend this drive over an external SSD, as the speeds are very close to SSD speed, but its price is so much lower. Whether you use the thunderbolt connection of the USB 3.0 connection you will have highly satisfying speeds. ... show more
