I ordered these as a gift for someone who recently had her hearing aids stolen. I was skeptical about the quality because the price seemed too good to be true, but I was impressed. She has thanked me over and over again for not having to miss out on moments with the family again. Says they are so comfortable that she would probably forget she had them in if it wasn’t for the fact that she could hear lol. I suppose we have to accept that we are all growing older and eventually our body doesn’t work quite the way it used to. This is often the case with hearing and I’m finding it increasingly difficult to follow conversations especially if there’s background noise like with a crowded room, machinery running, or loud music. I have annual hearing tests and the last test indicated that my hearing was still good at lower frequencies but I had mild to medium impairment in the higher registers – hence the difficulty in following speech. My otolaryngologist indicated that I wasn’t quite ready for hearing aids, but that moment was getting closer. Prescription hearing aids are professionally administered and come at a premium price often in the order of a few thousand dollars. Over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids became available in the USA in 2022 at a much lower price. They can still cost several hundred dollars but are much cheaper than prescription devices. I felt that one of these might be a good way for me to find out whether hearing aids would help with my hearing as it currently stands. At less than $400, these hearing aids from Kingwell are less expensive than most other OTC products but they appeared to offer a good range of features for the price. The product comprises two earpieces (one for each ear 😊), a charging/storage case, 5 pairs of different sized replacement silicone eartips, 3 pairs of silicone spirally things, a cleaning cloth, a printed quick-start guide, and a detailed set of instructions. This product appears to be very well designed and well made. The earpieces are white in color and resemble Apple AirPods so other people don’t really notice my affliction. 2 pairs of the eartips are labeled as being “No Hole” and the others as “Hole” I couldn’t see any differences between them – no explanation was provided. I don’t know how to use the silicone spirally things and the instructions don’t mention them – they appear to be described as “Anti-Lost Ear Fins” in the Amazon listing, which didn’t really help either. Otherwise, the instructions are very detailed and give excellent advice on how to use the product. Each earpiece has a battery that seems to last all day. The charging/storage case contains its own (larger) battery so that the earpieces can be recharged 2 or 3 times without access to a mains outlet – which is great when traveling. Simply placing the earpieces in the case will initiate a charging cycle which takes between 1 and 2 hours. The case takes about 3 hours to recharge. The USB-C cable is used to recharge the case, but no mains adapter is provided. The instructions don’t indicate what type of power supply should be used but I used a 5V 2A phone charger with no problems. It appears that the earpieces can be recharged while the case is being recharged. I needed to use the small-sized eartips to make the earpieces fit comfortably in my ears. Inserting the earpieces had to be done quickly or else they started shrieking very loudly and deafened me – presumably a feedback effect. I think a longer delay before activating the earpieces is needed. Once in place, the earpieces could be operated in two modes: “Hear In Noise” and “All Around”. The mode is changed by tapping one of the earpieces twice while active. The former mode applies background noise suppression so that conversations could proceed in a noisy environment. I found this to be ineffective for me – everything seemed to become very muted, and I couldn’t really hear any conversation. The “All Around” mode seemed to work very well although it took a long time to get used to the very different way of hearing. The instructions suggest that this could take several weeks. One unsettling effect was the way that it greatly amplified my own voice. There’s not much detail in the instructions about the mobile app that can drive these earpieces. I installed this app on my Android phone and it transformed my listening experience and I see it as critical to getting the most out of this product. The main benefit was that the hearing response of each of my ears could be calibrated by this software and an appropriate equalization profile would be applied to each earpiece amplification. This effectively balanced the perceived frequency response in both ears – high frequency sounds are heard at a similar level to low frequencies. I recently had my hearing tested by a professional and the hearing profiles from those tests were matched almost precisely by those produced using this app. The other main benefit for me was that once the earpieces were linked to app, I could take phone calls. I tried streaming music but found that I much preferred using high quality headphones with a suitable equalization applied. In summary, this appears to be a very well made and thought-out product. I think it does help with my hearing but it’s not totally perfect and it took me some time to get used to it, but this would probably apply to any hearing aid when worn for the first time. The app is needed to get the best performance out of this product. Is it worth the money? Yes, I think so – other similar OTC products seem to cost more, and professionally prescribed devices would cost up to 10x more.
