I was skeptical because of the mixed reviews but as it turned out it was the exact model (which I loved until it died) as the one I had for 10 years. I was shocked that it was an exact fit as I was contemplating the need to do some piping from the main feed pipe. As it turned out it was an exact for and other than the rubber Gromit use I just used the existing piping. This was the easiest replacement that I have ever done. We now have whole house softened and filtered water, which I love. I think my only criticism I would have is for the seller to show a picture of the manual cover so people know if there is difference in their model and what they have if they are replacing an existing one. Mine turned out off the charts easy and I could not be more please except I wish I would have pulled the trigger on Cyber Monday:) ... show more

    • Terrible Dissapointment

I installed this unit as a "direct replacement" for one of the models listed in the description. It's not. The height of the outlet from the floor is 42.5 inches and not 41.5 inches as shown on the installation diagram. The 42.5 inches does not match the height of the older units either. So I had to modify my supply plumbing. A second deviation is the valve drain line connection - on my older model it was a "garden hose" style threaded connection. This model has a barb fitting for tubing which means it no longer integrates with my sanitary piping. So now I have to kludge something together. So much for a "direct replacement". Final comments are that the joint between the rotary valve and the top of the "resin tank" leaks, the siphon tube to the venturi assembly is so stiff that it cocks the venturi assembly and will not maintain the critical seal for the salt tank siphon to work - which means that the unit will not brine (and fill water remains in the salt tank). I loved my old sears/Kenmore unit - I've rebuilt is a couple of times over the two decades or more that I had it. The controller electronics failed an they are no longer available. But it was so good I purchased this unit thinking that Kenmore had its act together. Not with the unit that I got. Now I have to go through the hassle of uninstalling this 80 pound beast, draining it, scooping the salt out, getting it back into the box, and returning it to Amazon. Called Kenmore customer service and the lady I spoke with was nice and knew the product but she didn't have sufficient definitive guidance to help me fix it - it was more "try this / try that". I know you are looking at this unit to save money particularly with a DIY install that should have been easy, but I've wasted more than two days on this thing. Very disappointing. ... show more

The description said that this was a direct replacement for a Kenmore 625.388450 (which is what I had, and mine was 25 years old). And it actually was - installation was fast and easy, given no plumbing modifications were required. The only minor issue encountered was that the electronics are an integral part of the top cover (which, in my opinion, should be removed for installation) - so, if you want the cover entirely out of the way, 4 or so connectors to the electronics and the brine tank light need to be temporarily removed. On the old unit, the electronics were not integrated into the cover, so disconnecting them to get full access to the softener internals was not necessary. Thus 4 starts instead of 5. ... show more

The last one has done a marvelous job for the past 12 years and still functions, but I thought it's time to change particularly because of the carbon filtration system. Like ease of installation and taste of softened water. Clorine odor and taste are completely removed by our Kenmore Model 520 softener. This model is pricey, but the value is there. Unit is two weeks old Jan 2025, I am glad that we choose a Kenmore to replace our old (10 Years) Sears water softener.

I bought this Kenmore water softener in hoping to have an easy setup and good product to use for my family. I item shipped to me was defected. Installation was going good and simple however, the Venturi valve didn’t work, which allowed the water in the brine tank to rise and flooded my garage.
