Find a good set of cobalt drill bits... add to cart. 3. Checkout. 4. Drill correct size hole in the center of bolt. At least as deep as the extractor tip. 5. insert and tap in appropriate sized extractor. 6. Use socket wrench or breaker bar to turn the extractor and watch magic unfold. 7. High five everyone you see after cursing at that damn bolt for days. I used this to extract a seized rotor set screw from my E46 BMW. No other methods worked, I tried heat, hammering in torx bits, drilling out the head... nothing worked. I wish I could have seen my own smile on my face when the bolt came out. I recently replaced my transfer case and tightened the fill plug to tight to the point that when trying to take it off I completely stripped it out. I originally tried welding a nut to it and then I stripped the nut, then I tried welding a ratchet extension to it and I broke the extension. After blowtorching it for 30 minutes and using a chisel to get the nut and extension off I drilled it out and tried this extractor. I tried 4 sizes first with no luck. After going to Home Depot and buying a bigger drill bit I tried the 11/16th size. I drilled it out, hammered it in, torched the plug for a solid 5 minutes and just like that, it broke lose. (With the help of a 3 foot cheater bar). I thought for sure I was going to have to take it to a machine shop and have them drill it out and rethread it, then disassemble the transfer case to get the shavings out. The good reviews swayed me to purchase this set. I have other screw extractors, but none have worked great. This set looked like just what I needed. I had a small ATV head with a broken exhaust stud. The top of the broken stud was a completely smooth break. I used a center punch and made my mark. I used a very small left hand drill bit and drilled the hole to the correct depth. Next I used a 1/8" Left hand bit to enlarge the hole. 1/8" was the drill bit to use for the smallest extractor in the set. When the hole was the correct depth, I inserted the extractor. I gave it a light tap with a small rubber mallet to get it seated. The using a wrench, I slowly turned it in. It went in very nicely and perfectly straight. I felt it get tight once it reached the maximum depth. Then I gave it a little pressure. I don't think the wrench moved much more than a 1/2" and the extractor snapped off completely flush with the top of the broken stud.. Either these extractors are to soft and break way to easily or they are to brittle and break off way to easily. Now I can tell it is hardened steel because I have to drill into the extractor in the middle of the stud now and it is not drilling easily at all. I really got screwed over with this set.
