  • Inexpensive BUT Very High Quality
No. The NEIKO 00911A SAE Tap and Die Set is not the Holy Grail of T&D sets. BUT, for the money it is an excellent alternative to the $220-$300 sets we all wish for. For the casual user, it is difficult to justify the expense of the the "ultra sets." (I really tried to - those chrome sets are so cool!) The size markings are clear to read and the titanium coating ensures smooth operation and extended life. ... show more

  • really nice set for the money
I was going to give this a 4 star, but then I thought to myself that there really isn't anything wrong with it and it is priced well so I adjusted it to a 5 star. This is a good home do-it-yourselfer quality tap and die set. The taps and dies are clearly marked, the tap/die wrenches are decent and it contains most, if not all of the common sizes one would want. I wouldn't call it industrial quality, but then it is priced at 1/5th of some of the other sets. If used with care (don't over exert and do use cutting oil), it should provide you years of life. One tip I will share about tap wrenches - I always loctite the left hand thread handle on the tap wrench because it never needs to be loosened and it will typically spin loose when you are adjusting the tap jaws. ... show more

  • Great set of Taps and Dies
Neiko while being a cheaper alternative tends to put out a halfway decent quality product and these seem to continue in that assessment. The cut quality of the threads are clean and precise. The taps and dies seem to be quality made and hold their edge after several uses no problem. The tap wrench is a bit cheap feeling and it's build quality is less than great but other than that I'd recommend. ... show more

  • Very handy set to have laying around
The product was inexpensive but I thought I would give it a try based on the reviews. There was only one job a tap was needed for so if the kit worked on that job I would be happy. The tap in question did work fine on the required job. Then since the kit was setting there I began to use it one every old rusty hole in the car I am working on. I felt a real sense of accomplishment reaming out all those old rusty holes that I would have just forced a bolt into with a 1/2 inch ratchet before. I was really impressed to discover there was a vertical style tool for the taps because at first all I saw was the horizontal style. That tool does not work in tight spaces so a crescent wrench was being used on those taps until I spotted the little baby vertical tool. I would recommend this kit without reservation for the price. ... show more

  • Seems pretty good so far with metal work
This is my first time in my life using a tap and die set and I decided to pick this set. It was easier than I thought to use a tap and die set. So far, I used the thread chasers to make some threads on a 2"x4" wood, 5052 aluminum, DOM tubing, ERW tubing, and a steel chassis. Keep in mind that I am using this Neiko tap and die set as a hobbyist and I use the set with hand tools, no drill or anything. I can't say much on how long it will last if you need this for your job but overall, I think it's a great set on the budget if you're doing some projects at home and you plan on using the tools by hand. ... show more

  • Dies seem good. Handle and case are awful
I don’t have experience with any other tap and die set, but these dies seem good so far. I’ve used the 3/8” die to extend the threads about two inches on six carriage bolts. The dies cut well, and cutting the sixth bolt felt the same as cutting the first. However, after I threaded the second bolt, the screw hole for the locking screw in the die handle has completely stripped. The die handle is made from some sort of soft cheap metal, maybe cast iron. This does not give me confidence in the kit as a whole. I have a feeling other handles are more comfortable, too. This one is super basic. The case is pretty terrible. Everything just sets in place. Nothing is friction locked in place. You must handle it with care when open to avoid dumping everything. I accidentally closed it the wrong way, and every single piece dumped out. It’s incredibly unsatisfying placing pieces back and just sitting them loosely especially when I have other similar tool cases where the tools snap in place. ... show more

  • Had just what I needed
I purchased a couple of saddle bag locking levers for my Harley Davidson motorcycle however disappointingly, the levers although coming with mounting screws were not tapped (why would Harley Davidson sell a product like this? But that's for another discussion). I didn't have a 8/32 tap, so I had to purchase the Neiko Tap and Die set to tap the locking levers. The levers were made of cast aluminum so the 8/32 tap sliced through it like a hot knife through butter. Was able to do it without a vice which was nice because I don't have one. The kit is very nicely put together with a storage case and is high quality. I am sure this will last me the rest of my life for any future times where I might need to tap a screw hole. ... show more

  • solid tool for the price
I like it better than what I found at Harbor Freight. I only occasionally need a tap and die, I have used it twice, for the one job I bought it for and an unexpected job, I'm pretty sure you never expect to have to use a tap and die. It worked, no complaints.
