  • Good price, BUT....
Purchased this set (and also the Efficere metric set) as an "upgrade" to a 15 year old Japanese set I have, but the smaller dies (1/4" and smaller) are really "burr city"! Pros and Cons follow... PROS: -The "bearing steel" construction and RC60 hardness (if both true) should mean these tools are a level above the multitude of "carbon steel" sets often found in this price range. -Good selection of sizes -Better (though bulkier) case than my older Japanese HSS set. -Imprinted rather than "etched' sizing identification - The taps and "most" of the dies have a reasonably decent machined finish to their cutting surfaces CONS: -The "handles" are definitely low quality/low utility items... definitely "lower quality" than those included with ANY budget tap/die set I've ever seen. Fortunately, I already have good quality tap wrenches/ handles available. - BURRS!!!! The smaller dies (in both the EFFICERE SAE and Metric sets I purchased) have VERY PROMINENT burring at both the leading and trailing edges of the cutting teeth. A few also show evidence of "overheating" during the machining process (localized blue colorization on lead-in teeth). This is likely due to excessive feed speed during machining or "dull" cutting tool usage during manufacture. - Overall quality assessment... No one will EVER confuse these tools with those produced by Greenlee or Hanson and Whitney (both machinist level quality). In using these I hope I don't at some miserable point end up trading one problem (buggered up threads) for an even worse one (a broken tap in a "hard to access" area such as with an engine component...making removal a lengthy and likely difficult process). Summary: I have a small accumulation of top quality USA produced taps (and a fewer number of dies) in the sizes I most often need. I'm keeping the EFFICERE sets to "fill in" the sizes (typically fine thread and Metric) that I don't have in either my U.S. collection or the Japanese HSS set I have. I wish I still had access to hardness and metallurgy equipment to validate the material and hardness claims made by the manufacturer. I don't... but they are likely at least "no worse" than other typical "budget sets" except for burring on the affected dies. The prevalence of the "VERY OBVIOUS" burrs on the smaller dies however is quite troubling to me... even for a "budget" die set. I can't fathom how ANY manufacturer would willingly put items with such obvious machining defects (major burring) on the market... and this makes me at least "question" other quality aspects of the product no so readily determinable by the typical buyer (hardness, material used, size accuracy,etc.). FINALLY: As time allows, I'll probably run a "mid-grade" bolt/screw through the dies impacted by the burr issue to see if the burrs will perhaps "self-shed" after a use or two. I'll also try a "low grade" bolt to see if the burred dies tend to ruin existing threading. I also expect to thread a couple of appropriate size steel rods to see if "this" promotes the burrs to "self-shed" or is at least capable of producing a "usable thread" (I'm not at all sure that the burrs will allow the die's cutting edges to properly engage un-threaded metal in order to actually form a proper thread) In any event... I'll likely use these tools (especially the dies) on an "as necessary" basis, for instances in which I don't have a known "good quality" threading tool to substitute... and only when addressing a "non-critical/non-expensive component". Kind of sad in a way... a bit more attention to quality control and this might actually be a "five star" threading set based on value and suitability for "general use" in a home shop environment. I'm at an age to where investing in a "high quality" tap and die set doesn't make much sense... especially based on how seldom I actually have to "cut threads" on the items I work on these days. Having a very good set of dedicated thread chasers, plus a good multi-size SAE/Metric Heli-Coil kit (for the "more severe" thread issues one encounters) I'm relatively well set to tackle most issues I normally deal with in this regard. In the meantime... with the new Efficere sets, use plenty of good quality cutting fluid, plenty of reverse motions to clear chips, and use extreme caution at the FIRST sign of needing "excessive" pressure to continue forming threads with these items. Again... don't exchange the relatively minor problem of needing to form or "chase" threads in an item, for the potentially MUCH GREATER problem of figuring out how best to remove a hardened broke tap from a hole, or having to deal with malformed threads created by a poor quality die. ... show more

  • Can't go wrong here!
These tools are both inexpensive and durable! You get so many different sizes, and for the price of a single tap at a hardware store, you can buy a whole set of these!

  • High Quality Tap & Die Set That Can Cut Stainless
I needed to cut some 6-32 threads in some stainless steel rods used to secure engine baffles underneath the engine for a Vans RV-9 Home-built Aircraft. I tried to make the threads with my Harbor Freight die that is made of carbon steel but it would not even scratch the surface of the stainless rods. I needed a much harder die that could cut stainless steel. I did some research and found that high quality dies that are made of Cobalt Steel, Titanium Steel, or High Speed Steel (HHS) could cut stainless. I happened to find this set and the product description said it is made of GCr15 Bearing Steel hardened to Rockwell 60 and could cut stainless. I didn't know what GCr15 steel was but I found the following definition online: GCr15 steel is one of the most commonly used Chinese bearing steels, it’s a high carbon chromium bearing steel with high hardenability, high & uniform hardness after heat treatment. I also looked up the rockwell 60 number which is based on a standard hardness scale that goes up to 62 so 60 is at the top of the range when it comes to hard steel. I was still a little skeptical since the price of this set was very low compared to other sets or individual dies I could find for cutting stainless. I decided to take a chance and try this set out since it had lots of good reviews saying the taps and dies in this set seemed to work well for most everyone who bought them and also several good comments about the customer service willing to refund customers who had any dissatisfaction with the product. My set arrived from Amazon in 2 days from ordering. I tried them out over the weekend and they cut very nice accurate threads in my stainless steel rods very easily while using a couple drops of tap magic oil. This set performs as advertised, it is made of industrial quality steel that can cut stainless steel. The other reviews also said the handles the set comes with are lower quality but I would say the handles are comparable to the ones that come in a Harbor Freight set. I also found on Amazon a very handy 5 piece set of GearWrench ratcheting handles for taps and dies that fit perfectly with this set and made the job easy. For the money, I don't think there is anything out there that compares to the quality of the steel in this set for cutting hard material. ... show more

  • Good buy for the money
I bought this tap and die set for occasional use in my shop while restoring an old barber chair. It doesn't get used for heavy duty projects so can't attest for continuous use but it's great for light work.
