  • Best Roomba So Far
Update April 2021: I've had my S9 now for over a year. It worked great from Jan 2020 until summer of 2020 when they sent an update to the app and then to the robot. The update removed the ability for me to set my robot to clean one room at high speed one day and the same or another room at a lower speed another day. One of the main reasons I got it was the ultra high vacuum, but I do not need it for the hard surface areas and like to clean at a lower power daily and once a week do a deep clean. This change was on purpose, so in my opinion they took away a feature that I paid a lot of money for. I have been in contact with service and was told there would be a work around for this issue but it's been over 9 months and things have only gone downhill so I am not hopeful at this point. I feel that this change is a downgrade for the robot functionality so I took off 2 stars for that. To add insult to injury they updated the robots firmware too, and then if I set my app at high clean power, when it would go back to charge it would revert to medium power. So if I was not around to go into the app and increase the vacuum power I would end up getting medium. This went on from fall of 2020 until late dec to Jan, when an update seemed to fix that. I only had that update for a week or two though and they rolled it back because a lot of users were having major issues. In the fall they replaced my unit which I appreciated but the problems were basically the same. It did fix a few minor issues though. I appreciated that but I had to get mad before they sent a new one, which I did not appreciate. Last week my new one started going out and it would drive to the room it was supposed to do, go back and forth a time or two ...like 1-2 minutes and then just stop and play the song like it was done and on it's charger but it just shut down in the middle of the room. I tried several things like re-starting it etc. Nothing worked so I did a factory reset. This of course wipes out all your maps so it took me an entire day to re-do all my maps. I did contact support and was told someone would get back to me. That was last week sometime and it's now the following monday and I have yet to hear from anyone. I'm just so disappointed in this and no longer recommend it. I regret spending so much money on something that is supposed to make life easier and instead had created more work. Waste of money! I'm leaving my original review below but changing my start rating from 5 to 2. I'm giving it 2 because it's not completely worthless, but it's not what I paid for. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- I've owned practically all of the versions of Roomba for the past 20 years and this one is by far the best. A few things that have been issues in all the past versions are solved. The biggest one is that Roomba can now clean dark colored carpets without getting stuck. The next improvement is that this Roomba does not require any virtual walls. My previously ones required me to use several virtual walls and now I can create walls on the app. I can also create block out zones like for the dog dishes. Another big improvement is that the brushes on this Roomba are wider than all the past Roombas. They reconfigured the wheels and gave the front a straight edge so that the brushes can go closer to the edges of the unit instead of having to fit between the wheels. The dust bin on this Roomba is also improved in that I can lift out the dust bin, and hold it over the trash can and press a button and the dirt falls out the bottom. Also this dirt bin can be washed out which is nice. There is one area that this Roomba needs to go back to the prior version and that is the dust filter. The new filter does not have the mesh layer on the dirt side of the filter. I used to be able to vacuum off the filter more easily because the dirt was not all wedged into the folds of the filter. The new Roomba filter does not have this mesh, so it's going to need to be replaced more frequently. I am hoping that they decide to add the mesh to this filter in the future. The vacuum power of this Roomba appears to be much stronger than previous versions. On the strongest suction power it's pretty intense. My previous Roomba was the 980 which did have the power boost so it could be a pretty strong vacuum, but this one surpasses that. One nice thing is that the app I was using for the 980 I can also use for the s9. The app keeps them both straight, so I can adjust settings, and also with Alexa, I can use voice commands to start or stop either of my Roomba's. With the ability to map out rooms on this s9, I can tell Alexa to vacuum the family room and she knows to send the s9 to vacuum only the room I told her to. I can also schedule my s9 to clean only certain rooms in certain ways on certain days or times. I could have the s9 clean one room deeply in the morning and another room lightly in the afternoon. I can set up multiple schedules on every day of the week cleaning different rooms in different ways every time. The battery on the s9 seems longer lasting than previous versions especially on the lower level cleaning settings. The initial set up was not too hard. I did have an issue with an error message where it kept telling me that the lid was open. I contacted iRobot and they sent me a new lid and a new dust bin because it seemed to be sitting up a bit too high. I got these items within a couple days and everything is working great. I love how iRobot stands behind their product and always makes things right. To get the mapping set up, you have to run roomba a few times to get a complete set of maps. You can just send it out on a mapping run with no vacuuming so that it can do all the mapping without having to recharge. I have a pretty big first floor so I did use that a couple days in a row and then my map was all done. Once that was done it was super easy to divide the rooms. The app actually makes some room lines for you and then you can add move or remove any of the lines, and name the rooms. You can also add keep out zones so it won't run over cords or dog dishes or things like that. Overall I have to say I am thrilled with this roomba. I named her Rosie, and my old roomba I named Mac. Rosie was the maid on the Jetsons and Mac was Rosies boyfriend. I'm having so much fun with my new robot helper. Thanks for reading my review Becky Brooks ... show more

  • This is why I got a robot vacuum!
This is a HUGE upgrade from the Neato Botvac we got 4 years ago. Not having to empty the bin after each cleaning is awesome; hair no longer gets tangled around the brush roll; Roomba is less likely to get stuck under our sofa or around other furniture; it's better at getting into corners... this is ticking all the boxes of why I want a robot vacuum at all. So happy with my purchase! PROS: - self-emptying dustbin means way less manual maintenance - excellent suction - 2-pass cleaning is at least as good as our upright - no need for magnetic strips or other hardware to keep out of areas: once it's got your place mapped you can manually wall-off areas - really good at getting into corners - does not get tangled in our Persian-carpet fringe (with Neato I had to tuck the fringe under before each cleaning to keep it from getting stuck there) - main brush rollers far less likely to get hair/etc stuck around it - ability to start the robot while away - will dock & empty itself if full during a cleaning - will dock, charge & continue if it runs out of charge during a cleaning CONS: - fairly loud on medium & high power (low power is about as loud as Neato) - though once I'm no longer working from home 5 days/week this shouldn't matter - took 4 full-house runs to completely map our 900 sq foot condo - occasionally gets 'confused' on start when I select a 1-room cleaning (I just pick it up, move it a few inches & restart and it goes) - self-emptying bin requires regular purchase of bags - cleaning takes a long time - on 'Detailed Clean' it takes 1.25-2 hours to clean place. Maybe it'll get 'smarter' over time, but it does seem to run a long time. ... show more

  • Awesome robot with minor issues
I have the 960 and just bought the s9 for upstairs. It does a phenomenal job, really awesome. Almost too awesome; I have to empty it halfway through a job due to the amount of fluff it pulls off the rugs (-0.5 stars). I know that there's an emptying system available for an extra $300 but it's huge and unsightly. I don't want our vacuum dock to be a feature in our living room. The main gripe I have with the s9 over the 960 is the dirt detect feature seems to have gotten dumber. I watched it spend 5 minutes trying to vacuum up one of the heating vents because it thought it was dirt. 960 never did that (-0.5 stars) It certainly does get better coverage than the 960 though. The maps it sends back are way more detailed. It has had some issues with docking but that doesn't bother me too much since I don't use the scheduling feature. The s9 has never been stuck, not once. The 960 gets stuck almost every time we run it (which isn't a huge problem since we're always at home when we run it). The obstruction detection has improved out of sight. If you're deciding between the 960 and s9: - if you're like me and are always at home when you run it (i.e. it's never unattended) then the 960 is probably good enough. If you're planning to use it on schedule/unattended, s9 (get the + if you can afford it and don't mind the unsightliness of the dock) - if you have a lot of bumps/ridges/uneven surfaces, get the s9. It's a much better climber that the 960 because it has wheels in the middle and powered rollers up front (i.e. 4 wheel drive) whereas the 960 has the rollers in the middle, near the wheels, so it's more like a 2WD. - if you have long thick strong hair, don't bother with the dock. It collects hair in the rollers and you'll need to remove it long before you'll need to empty the big dock (5 stars for picking up hair!). I'd really love if Roomba could add little razors or something to slice the hair before it wraps around the rollers rather than just let it bunch up. If they did I'd be a lot more tempted to get the dock. ... show more
