  • UPDATE: It now works for me.
This is well-made magnetic holder with much thought given to execution, but it is not universal in application. It's designed to clip to a car's air vent and provide a magnetic mounting point for a cellphone. The vents in my car have horizontal vanes which are curved like the top of a wing of an airplane. They don't move; as in most cars the vent to which they are attached tilts up and down within the dash. There is also a slight downward tilt to the vanes. My phone uses a Mophie Juice Pack Air, so it's heavier than most phones with standard cases. The vents tilt up and down to adjust air direction, with very little effort. So the weight of the iTap when combined with the phone, Mophie, and the shape and angle of the vent, tilts the vent to its maximum downward position. The phone now faces downward making it impossible to view. The iTap does indeed *rotate* 360º but it doesn't *tilt* or *pivot* much. It can't pivot upward nearly enough to compensate. It doesn't have any method of limiting the downward travel, making it useless for my application. The pinchers didn't grip the vane as tightly as I would have liked, but that's possibly because the vane is curved (front to back, like a wing) with little surface area to grab. Still, with the iTap mounted all the way to the right edge of the vent (so it wouldn't slide any further) I was able to lift the right side of the phone up to break the magnetic grip with one hand, and remove it with the mount properly in place. The thickness of the Mophie precludes the use of the larger inner plate. The smaller outer plate is a little wider than the inner plate and I had to bend it slightly to match the slight curve of the Mophie. Another point of consideration is the thickness of the plate (approximately 1/32") and its edge. There's a noticeable ridge when mounted on the back of the case and it might cause wear in a pants pocket. The iTap's inability to stabilize the phone and position it in a comfortable viewing angle made it absolutely unusable for me. It was not a defective unit; it just was not adaptable to my car. This is really disappointing because the ability to just "throw" the phone up to a small and unobtrusive mount and have it stick and being able to rotate it horizontally when desired, can't be overstated. I have to carefully place it in my current mount which can't be tilted towards me or turned horizontally. It's not a big deal until you experience the convenience of a magnetic mount. If your car has vents that are very stiff in positioning (or a gradually sloping dash) the iTap may work for you. It's well made, attractive, fairly inconspicuous, and potentially very convenient. * * * * * * * UPDATE: Shortly after my initial review, iOttie sent my a new and improved version said to provide a better grip, with a film backing for your phone (to protect the back and provide easier removal) and a different-sized outer plate. After several months of daily use, I now say "Well done, iOttie!" One of my criticisms was the thick, large metal plate for the back. It didn't fit the back of my curved Mophie Juice case (but would fit the flat back of a phone very well) and I felt the thick edge of the plate would wear a pocket quickly. IMPROVEMENT: iOttie now provides a thinner, smaller plate that will fit on the back of most any reasonably flat phone. It wasn't needed for a bare iPhone but fits on my Mophie perfectly. Well done, iOttie. Another criticism was the weak grip of the jaws that clamp onto thee vanes of an air vent. Attempting to remove the phone pulled the mount from the vent, making the mount useless. UPDATE: The new version is *very* grippy. While holding the heavy Mophie/iPhone combo absolutely securely, it stays perfectly put when I pull the phone off the magnetic mount. Well done, iOttie. My last critique was the limited pivoting range of the mount. To be fair, my car is more to blame than the mount. As I said in my initial review, the lack of slope of my dashboard and vent compared to newer cars gives the phone a slight down angle. The iOttie would have to be completely redesigned to accommodate a near vertical dashboard. This might mean a thinner post attached to the magnet. That might make a less durable mount. So I happily give iOttie a pass on this one. I didn't try the plastic film since the plate was still attached to the case very firmly and it seemed like a good idea to leave it be. The improved grip was a major improvement and made the mount eminently useable. It's a pleasure to get in the car and just put the phone on the mount and forget it until it's needed. Getting out of the car, just grab the phone and pull. Nothing could be easier. The new plate and film were nice touches, above and beyond, in my book. The iOttie Magnetic Mount is well made and very durable. Again, it's best suited for cars that have a sloping dashboard which would allow for a better viewing angle, but not unusable for near-vertical dashboards. This is head and shoulders superior to every vent mount I've tried so far. And kudos to iOttie Customer Service for their follow-up. I've raised my review from three stars to 4.8. I'm a very satisfied customer and would buy this again in a heartbeat. ... show more

  • When it works it works, when not, its a hit or miss..
I purchased this mount back in July of 2018 and have been using for quite sometime. When I got this I had a ASUS ZenFone AR with a insignia phone case (hard shell outside, rubber inside.) Firstly I want to say that this type of mount will work for some phones better then others, and the case will also play a BIG factor in if this mount will work for you. For me, it took some time of trial and error, and trying different methods and finally it came down to using the included plastic film with the round metal disc on the outside of the case. Honestly speaking, it was not ideal, it looked ugly as the parts of the case not covered by the plastic faded leaving a big square of bright red surrounded by the dull red, but functionally it worked fine and I never had the phone fall off the mount when driving. Prior to settling on the plastic plus circle disc I tried all the other configurations that they suggest. I used the big plate inside between the hard shell and the rubber. This worked somewhat but the phone would still fall off when going over big enough bumps. I then tried using the small circle on the outside without the plastic as they suggested. Sadly, this did not work either as it would not stick flush to the back of the case most likely due to the very slight curve of the phone backing which is why I ultimately stuck with the plastic and metal disc option. At present I have just changed phones over to the Pixel 3a XL and I am running into the same issue that I did when I first got this mount. With that I have now changed cases and so when I tried to remove the metal disc from the back of the old case, the plastic that I was using to stick the disc to the case was completely destroyed. I have since then placed the metal disc inside my case and it is not enough to keep the phone mounted on the vent even though it is a lighter phone then the ASUS, and the case IMO is thinner then the insignia one. I have yet to try the metal square inside the case as for the life of me I cannot find the box this came in, nor can I find the metal square that they included. It is disappointing that the discs seem to be one time use objects, and at best seem to be very situational if they will work with your case mostly being in my situation as I cannot stick it to the outside of the case since 1) it is fabric and 2) even if I had a plastic case I do not have the plastic sheet anymore the metal disc sticks to. In the end, If you get this mount make sure you are using a phone and phone case you plan to keep for a while, or a case that is thin enough you do not need to go to the extreme like I did with the plastic sheet and the metal disc as they really do seem to be consumable goods since if you do not, it can be quite dangerous with having the phone fall off while driving. One such example for me was when the phone fell off the mount unexpectedly while using the metal disc inside, one of the times it fell on my way home from work at like 6:30pm, I had started to move into a intersection from a stop at a red light and the phone just fell. I tried to catch the phone with my right hand and I accidentally hit my gear shift, shifting the car into neutral while moving across the intersection, was pretty freaking scary and unexpected too. ... show more
