  • Manual Duplex Hell! Difficult Setup for non-technical people.
It is an older printer. (New in Box, but old model). If you are computer illiterate, installing will be difficult. My wife, and parents will not be able to figure out the instructions. My home network: 1 cable modem, 2 wireless routers (A&B), multiple switches on router A. Systems range from Win7, Win8.1, Win10, and Android. Followed the directions "exactly" as they were written from a currently patched and fully updated Win-7 laptop. The install seemed to have locked up near the end of the instructions. I forget exactly where, but after 30 minutes of waiting for completion and ZERO progress, I rebooted my laptop. After my laptop rebooted, I re-ran Setup, and it completed. The printer was available to ALL computers that were attached to the same LAN as the laptop I used to install the printer. I have NOT been able to get it to print via Android (but I haven't really spent that much time troubleshooting). I would not expect my parents to get this to work. I am a certified ethical hacker and been working with computer communications since 1992. Easy for me, but unexpected errors did cause me to raise an eyebrow a few times. Quality: The printer wakes up quickly, and prints very well (for a cheap and older laser printer). The printer does NOT have a manual Duplex option. I attempted to print 71 pages (duplex with office 2013 Word). I flipped the pages and re-inserted into the printer. The printer did NOT reverse the pages, so basically it printed as such. 1,3,5,7,...(flipped pages to put 7 on top) 2,4,6,8. Confused?? Well, this put page 8 behind page 1, instead of page 2 behind page 1. See my problem???? Since I was trying to print 71 pages, I would have had to manually flip/reverse 36 pages in order to get page 2 to appear on the back of page 1 and page 70 to match with page 69. I apologize for the confusion, but if you try it, you'll realize what I'm talking about. ... show more

  • This printer does not install correctly under Debian Linux - PROBLEM NOW SOLVED
Review updated with the solution to the problem (see below) Be wary of buying this printer if you use Linux! While Hewlett-Packard DO say that it's usable from Linux, it requires a PROPRIETARY plug-in to print correctly, and the only way that I've been able to find to get this plug-in is via H-P's own software. The problem is that their software states that there is a checksum error in the file as downloaded, and that's as far as you can get, it's a fatal error as far as the installer is concerned. Using the stand-alone plug-in downloader (hp-plugin) gives substantially the same error messages. I have tried contacting H-P's support, I can only advise you to save your time. Phone support refers you to their chat support ("They do the website and Linux"), but chat support says they only do Windows and Mac, and all they can do is to refer you back to the website from which you downloaded the original installer and from where you got the links to call H-P support. Round and round and round we go... I hate having to write this review. I've used Hewlett Packard printers since the early 1980s, and this printer was meant to be a replacement for my ancient LaserJet 5N which finally died. Their support has gone downhill like you wouldn't believe, unfortunately. Now all this may well be Linux-specific. For all I know, the printer works like a champ under Windows or a Mac. If I manage to find some way to get it to work under Linux (I have two weeks before it goes back to Amazon) then I will post a follow-up - but for the moment, all I can do is to repeat what I said at the start, do NOT buy one of these printers if you're a Linux user. THE SOLUTION, thanks to one of the members of the Debian users mailing list. (Anybody not using Linux, please don't bother reading this! (: ) OK, thanks to one of the people on the Debian users mailing list, I have the solution. 1) Uninstall the copy of HPLIP which you probably have installed from your distro's repositories. At least for the Debian version, it's not recognised. 2) Download and install HPLIP from [...] 3) Go to [...] and download the latest *.run. 4. 'mkdir plugin' and move your file into it. 5. The file is a shell script containing needed plugins and other files. Make it executable with 'chmod 755 *.run' and look at its help with './*.run -h'. 6. Check what you are going to install by using './*.run --tar vxf' to extract the files from the script. 7. Install (as root) with './*.run'. Works for me, at any rate. ... show more

  • exactly what I was looking for, wifi connected, mobile printing, black and white, fast and tons of printing per cartridge
I had done a lot of research before finally deciding to purchase this printer. I had a hp photosmart printer that seemed to need ink every time we needed to print anything, making it frustrating and very costly to print anything. I love the wifi feature and the fact that you could print from a mobile device so that is what I was looking for. Then I came upon this printer, it had the features I was looking for and read many reviews about how well it did using the toner cartridge, so I purchased it. It has been really awesome, my first experience with a laser jet in the home setting and it fills all the needs of this family. As far as the toner goes, several people have been printing anything and everything they need without fear of making another trip to the store for a ink cartridge. I would estimate that we are around 200 or so pages printed and I'm still at half and that is with the toner cartridge that was provided, and we know that those are sort of like sample cartridges. The only Con I have with this printer is that the set up was a little challenging and when our wifi goes out, it takes a little bit of tech to get it back up and running so if you have trouble with setting up wireless devices you might need to ask someone with a little more know how to help but beside that it has been very reliable ... show more
