  • Awful software!
Style: Printer Only
This product is a disappointment. MFP's are mature products - basically, the only significant differences between different OEM products are with the software. I have had many HP, Lexmark, and Brother MFP's and all of these manufacturers have better software than Canon. Example: if I select Scan-to-Email, the printer wants me to enter the email address on the small touchpad. Why not offer the option -- like all of the other OEM's -- to send the file to your email program? The printer wants to hold your contact list and manage it from the small touchpad. I have over 4000 entries in my contact list and Outlook already manages those easily, so why do I want the printer to manage them....actually, who would want a printer to hold their contacts? It really comes down to one thing. Canon has designed the printer to be a good standalone device and has foregone any attempts to work/integrate with other products. Designing the product so that the touchpad is the primary input device is a fundamental design choice that limits the usability of the product, especially since the touchpad is a really slow and imprecise input device . As far as the image-to-paper hardware goes, it seems to work fine. Oh, one other example of how out-of-touch Canon is...when you register the product on-line, Canon wants to know your OS. Windows users are given the choices of XP, Vista, and Win7. There are no choices for Win8 or Win10! Really? The only choices are for OS's that are so old that they are out of support? You can select "Other" and then type in the name of your OS, but it is a perfect example of how little Canon knows/cares about what happens outside of their little white boxes. I really regret the purchase. I suggest that you would be happier with any other mainstream MFP. LATER EDIT: I found a link of a forum that may change my review....more to follow. ... show more

  • A mid-duty all-in-one that punches way above its class
Style: Printer Only
Nice all in one that has a foot print and solid feel not unlike the old, bulletproof HP 4000 series Laser Jets. 20 minutes to set up to run using a Windows 10 desktop. Fast (really instant!) print, copy and surprisingly, scan speeds. Easy to use and articulate touch screen controls. Initial power up or wake up within 10 seconds. Totally capable of working well within the standard setup protocol. If you have a multi station intranet with specific needs, there are many setup options to keep your IT department happy. Observations: Make sure you download newest firmware (via the printer touch pad) and latest software (via your computer). I'm using 5g wifi to interface. No connectivity drops when sleeping or fully turned off. Speed is virtually indistinguishable from a hardwired interface. Plus I get to print remotely using Google print...priceless! Do yourself a favor and use the WPS "push button method" to initially connect to your router- easy peasy. Pay attention to miriad paper options that specify both type and weight of your copy paper. Don't tempt fate printing on 24# Bond when the machine is set on 16# recycled. I can only guess there would be bleed/fusing issues and maybe even feed problems due to this operator error. Ps. Did I mention how cool it is freaking out unsuspecting office peeps when I shoot something to the printer via Google Print.. You Tube worthy! ... show more

This printer is a great value! In general I am very pleased with this printer and my experience. This is a solid machine with some impressive features like automatic double sided printing, double sided copying, double sided scanning, and double sided faxing! I run Windows 10 pro, and some printers have trouble with Windows 10. So far this printer has given me no trouble and I have tested every function (print, copy, scan, and fax). The machine seems well built and is heavier than other multi-function printers I have experienced. I like heavy. I did a network installation that went very smoothly. The MF424dw installs fairly easily though some computer experience helps (e.g., knowing that the computer must be configured as well as the printer (like adding a printer using the Windows Control Panel)). If you can't get a function to work and you have followed the Canon "Getting Started" instructions, think about what settings the computer needs to interface with a new peripheral. I find the (color) display sequences to be a little counter intuitive and use a touch screen stylus to press the buttons to be sure I get the correct setting - particularly during configuration. I'm sure I will get used to the display as time goes on. Finally, if you feel there is not enough information in the multi-lingual green covered "Getting Started" paper document packed with the printer, load the companion CD and look at the comprehensive 700+ page English language "MF424dw Users Guide". Embedded in this Users Guide is a 96 page "Setting Up" document which is a lot less intimidating than 700 pages and has more detail than paper Getting Started booklet. ... show more
