A (mostly) solid laser printer -- (mostly) what you would expect from a business class HP Printer

HP makes reliable business-class laser printers, and the M554 is (generally) not an exception. It's sturdy, quick to wake up, quick to put its first page out, and quick to print the rest of your job. But to my surprise and disappointment, the first machine I received came from an "HP Returns" center, and sans HP foiled logo on the front of the unit. Furthermore, the unit was missing its customary orange shipping straps -- a secondary but persuasive indication that I got a "refurbished" product at best, at the new price. If I bought a second-hand machine with disclosed wear-and-tear, I'd think nothing of it. But I bought a new machine at its new price -- but that's not what I received. HP, you're a mega-giant -- I get it -- and you won't blink if I take my $880 to Lexmark or elsewhere. But, come on. Step up your QC. Amazon was great, however, and made me happy with a replacement.

LOVE THIS PRINTER

I'm just so happy with this printer. I've had it a bit over 6 months and just love it. No problems at all yet. Fast, quiet. I hope the fact that it's a pretty new design that it will continue to hold up over the years. I was hesitant to order a printer model that had been out for a decade.

I love the printer, but I do not like that I can't disable sleep mode and have to go push buttons and such to "Wake up" the printer if I send it a job. That gets annoying after a little while... Give me the option to disable it when I pay this much for an "ENTERPRISE" class printer for heaven's sake. Other than that though, it is a GREAT printer. Quality and speed are outstanding, and the interface is HP quality and intuitive.

When is HP going to allow you to disable Sleep Mode

For a long time the company has refused to allow the ability to completely turn off Sleep mode in the name of "energy saving" or "enviromental conservation". It's Bull****. You sacrifice a printer that goes into a deep sleep after a long period that you can never choose "Never" and have to physically wake up the printer in order to print a job. Who at HP thought that was anything anyone wanted? Whether you use a printer at home or in a high traffic area where printing is essential, after a certain period - that you have to choose - the printer will shut down. So after coming back after closing hours, you are doing work and go to print something only to be told the printer is "offline", forcing you to get up go over to the printer (doesn't matter if it's right next to you or in another room) you have to hit a button to 'wake it up' and then resend the job. Please, for the love for all that is holy, do not buy HP printers until they bring back the option of turning completely off Sleep Mode. Who even wants that.
