I have spent the last few weeks trying to find the perfect cooler, and I think I nailed it. I've had a Yeti hard sided cooler for years and I love it, but as most know, LOTS of insulation, little storage. That works for long outings, and keeping ICE or food cold for extended adventures. It's a necessary part of backcountry camping, or just long stays w/ no electricity. For a backpack, that's not really necessary. The things that are key for a backpack are, comfort, usability, and keeping things cold for a day. Just a day. Maybe even a 1/2 day is ok really. For fishing, maybe enough room for a catch or 2. Enter, Pelican. They aren't really a marketing machine like the major brand, and this backpack didn't pop up in my original amazon searches. I only found it on google after some deep diving. I've had a ATA Pelican case, and it's bad-ass. Never thought about looking at their coolers. This thing was designed for exactly what most people need. And I'll tell you, I was a bit worried it wound't add up. But it does exactly what it should. And frankly, I think they have a superior product for a few reasons: 1: Bottom cooler / It's designed with the dry zipper. Perfect for keeping drinks and food cold for extended outings. It's great for cans, bottles, sammiches, whatever. It works GREAT with any kind of good ice pack. I use a gel pack that stays frozen all day. Access is a bit of a PITA because the zipper is tight (needs to be). A bit hard for constant access, which is ACTUALLY why I decided against the Backflip (YETI), as the zipper is the ONLY access. 2: Top / It's a dry bag with an easy access roll top. But what either isn't clear, or isn't advertised, or they don't want to commit to, is that Pelican has decided to make a kind of medium insulated cooler with easy access for the top... and it either can be a dry bag, or a cooler. Because they don't explain this very well, I decided to test it for cold retention and leak-proofness. I dropped ice in about 1/3 of the way up to the top, put 2 cold beers in and left it outside for 12 hours in the Texas summer heat. The result? ICE cold beer 12 hours later. Condensation, sure. Melted ice, definitely. But less than I would have expected. Leaking? No. So, for a day trip, you wont have ANY issue using the top for cold rosé... Awesome that it's tall enough for a bottle or 4 of wine. MY plan is to get ice packs for the top, and it'll be great for a few bottles of wine, maybe 4, and a 6 pack, sammiches, etc etc. The outer storage back holds a tackle kit, my telescoping fishing rod, loops for caribeners to hook in hats, bait kits, waterbottle, whatever. So, it's perfect for real life, and real fun, and looks cool as hell. Haven't stopped wanting to use it yet. (UPDATE) After a couple weeks of pretty light use I'm noticing the stitching unraveling at some high stress points. It hasn't fully let go yet, and maybe it wont, but I think this is the thing people have said: Looks like the stitching just isn't as durable as the rest of the bag, which is too bad since it is otherwise perfect. ... show more

This backpack is awesome. Holds a lot of cans and you don’t even no the weight is there when it is on your back. Had a issue with shipping but that was fixed no questions asked. Very good customer service. I am usually a yeti guy but I think I might have to change that. This pelican is flawless.

Does not keep things cold, and is not rigid enough. Everything in the bottom compartment gets smashed and it is a pain to open. I wish I wasn’t past 30 days so I could return it. Should have bought the yeti. Don’t buy this POS
