Picked up three HGST Ultrastar 7K6000 6 TB drives, and this benchmark is from one of them. Despite being roughly 10 years old, they’re still going strong. Disks came looking clean, and in good condition as if I were buying them as new old stock. Tested on Ubuntu 24.04 using KDiskMark (fio backend) Read: 215 MB/s Write: 209 MB/s (8 GiB × 3 passes) Performance was consistent with no dips or latency spikes. SMART health: Passed Power-on hours across the three drives range from just over 300 hours to about 80,000 hours—it’s pretty much a roll of the dice what you’ll get. All three came with zero reallocated or pending sectors, though, so no complaints there. Noise level: noticeable hum and seek chatter, but nothing obnoxious. About the same as a cheap NAS or DVR drive. If you’re building a SnapRAID, NAS, or bulk storage setup, these are a fantastic value. Built for 24/7 uptime, and clearly, they still deliver after a decade.

I bought mine from GoHardDrive by selecting the Amazon seller. If you know how to read SMART data (as long as the current column is _GREATER_ than threshold column, it's healthy), skip this review and look at the pictures. If you don't, then proceed to read the rest of this review. To test this drive, I did 10 64GB read/writes with CrystalDiskMark. I took pictures of the SMART data before and after. Other than a slight increase in temperature, I didn't have any changes in the SMART data, which tells me this is a good drive. Let's start with the bad. Most people would shriek in horror at the drive having a 4.5 year power on time. But since the drive hasn't had any errors, 19 spin ups, this tells me the drives weren't really used that much. After all, did I expect a brand new 6TB hard drive for $67? Of course not. Would I trust this more than a refurbished Seagate? Absolutely, HGST is pretty reliable. (If you don't believe me, look at Backblaze's HDD stats.) The good: Cheap Surprisingly quiet SMART data is clean and healthy SMART data wasn't reflashed -- GoHardDrive appears honest The bad: Long Power On Hours (4.5 years) That being said, should you use this with important data? Probably not. Only use this if you need a cheap drive.

I've been a professional systems and storage engineer for many years, so when I told my coworkers I'd ordered a refurbished HDD, they were shocked that I'd even consider one. But I'm reasonably well-protected against data loss: the storage array is running with double redundancy (RAID-Z2) and my data is backed up on-site, off-site and online. Plus, BackBlaze's regular drive reports show HGSTs to be the most reliable out there, so I was pretty comfortable taking a chance. This drive's little brother (4TB, refurbished) has been running in my file server for about a year without issue, so when yet another Seagate 3TB disk died I had little hesitation in buying refurbed HGST again. It arrived earlier than expected (a pleasant surprise from Amazon, especially lately), with drives well-sealed and well-packed, so I opened one and ran it through its paces before it went into the array. A full badblocks run on Ubuntu 18.05 using an external USB3/SATA dock took just over three days and returned no errors. Better still, reads were steady at about 200MB/sec and writes were usually over 150MB/s. Nice. The SMART usage stats were a bit higher than expected but not terrible: Power_on_hours was over 3300, and both load_cycle_count and power-off_retract_count were over 3000. Frankly, if this disk had shown 0's I would have been concerned. And really, at six months an HGST disk should just be getting started. Summary from a professional storage geek: these are a good value and should last you a long time.

I had some trouble installing 4 of these hard drives at first. The devices was not recognized in the bio, than after a bit of tinkering I hear a lot of noise. I realized that 4 hard drive on a single Sata power cable is generating too munch voltage drop. Therefore, the internal motor is stalling. Stalling motor requires even more power than normal running motor. Creating even more voltage drop. So, I split the power between two Sata power cables and everything is fine. Works like a charm.

deceptive practices like clearing smart readings, means that i couldnt trust the goHardDrive vendor again. just leave the smart alone, so that i can quickly judge how safe the drive is to use somewhere. looking in crystal disk, it had zeros across the board, but since i know i purchased refreshed, i put it in a linux machine and found that it had 61k hours on it. thats fine and dandy, not a problem for a drive with 2million hours rating. however, underhandedly clearing the smart and now i cant see any problems at all in its history... id say their drives are ok for raids, especially ones where you could lose more than one drive without losing data. it will live in my media pc, as a copy of media only. have to buy a new drive or maybe even tape for long term reliable storage.

I received my HGST 6 Tb 7200 RPM drive on 5 Feb 2020. I’m using it in a home Win10 PC in a non-RAID configuration. Sound is ok. I can hear the head seeking but no problem at all. The SMART data indicates no previous power on cycles and zero hours. Drive temperature is 96F in a 69F room. The drive was well packaged with two cardboard boxes. They drive was suspended in the inner box with two plastic holders. There was a card with a NY phone number for tech support. The card also stated the warranty was 2.5 years and the warranty display on Amazon page was 3 years. I called the seller with the number on the card. I related the difference in warranty period, so he emailed me a certificate stating the warranty was 3 years. He said the card was old and had the wrong warranty period. So far I am happy with my renewed HGST Ultrastar 7K6000 drive.

I have purchased these exact same drives from this company before and had a great experience with what I received. That is not the case this time. Both drives I ordered this time ramp up to an insanely loud volume which makes them unusable for me because I do A/V editing and recording work in the same space. It might be OK if you are attaching them to a machine in a room that has other loud noises. To make matters worse, one of the drives was not even recognized as a device by my computer. In either case, they're not usable as they came. I returned these and bought Seagate drives instead.
