I’ve tried a lot of at-home hair color, and this is one of the few that actually covered my stubborn gray hairs without leaving my hair feeling dry or damaged. The 8N Light Blonde gave me a natural-looking color with nice shine, not that flat “box dye” look. I also love that it’s ammonia-free and doesn’t have the overpowering chemical smell most hair dyes do. I am very satisfied with this product. One of the best things is that it doesn’t smell like this terrible ammonia that I had to leave the bathroom because I couldn’t even breathe, those things are so dangerous but with this it feels so good and the result color is so amazing (light blond) . I really love it so I’m subscribed now and I will not change this. Also with the balm included my hair is so soft and wonderful. My scalp was always irritated but now it feels amazing. Thank you.

It's high summer here in zone 9, Central Florida, and I'm outside daily, so I do expect a bit of sun-fading over the two weeks before I color my roots again. The photo in my review is Day 1 of my fresh color. I use a combination of 6N + 6D, with just a shot of 5N + 5D to make my roots just subtly darker than the rest of my hair, and to provide a little depth to the color when I do the "drag through" the length in the last 10 minutes of total color time. I've been using Herbatint since I started going gray in high school....so....well over 40 years now, and I love how the Herbatint colors can be mixed, so one can achieve the most "natural" looking tone and base color at any age, and any "season," so that one's hair color compliments one's skin tone, whether in a "tan" time of year or a more "faded," sun-deprived "winter" skin tone. Our highly chlorinated municipal water can really fade any color, and may sometimes cause tint changes that can make the "tone" of the color more "red" or "orange." Should that occur, I always keep some "C" (Ash) tone colors, for example "6C" or "5C" on hand, in case I decide to add a shot of the "C" tone to mellow out any "too red" or "brassy" tones. This doesn't happen often, especially now that we have chlorine filters on all of our shower heads and wands, but I thought you'd want to know how even "golden" or "warm" colored hair that might get "too red" can be corrected back to what YOU want the color to look like for your skin tone. The older I get the more "sensitive" I've become to many, many shampoos, conditioners, and colors, and Herbatint COLOR has NEVER given me any allergic response (no burning, no bumps), however I cannot use the Herbatint after-color conditioner that they provide in the box; I am highly allergic to their conditioner. I'm highly allergic to MOST conditioners, even the "fragrance free" ones. Even the vanicream free and clear conditioner gives me a little itchy scalp, but so far, vanicream free and clear is the LEAST itchy, most tolerable conditioner I've found. But....it's not a great conditioner (see picture: this is day 1 of my Herbatint 6N 6D color, washed with vanicream free and clear shampoo, and conditioned with vanicream free and clear conditioner. Herbatint provides excellent coverage of white / gray roots (I always mix an "N" Natural Series Herbatint color with the desired tint color - like the Golden "D" colors) just to make sure I cover my white roots well and quickly (I process for about 25 minutes before a 10 minute "drag through" or for about 30 to 35 minutes when I'm just doing my roots). It's a bit expensive, but I only use a partial bottle of each color each time I color (because I'm mixing colors), so for me 1 box of each color lasts at least through 2 colorings.

Grab your coffee, this is a long one! I've tried multiple brands and shade variations over the years, with the HERBATINT brand being my favorite so far (for color shade, color lasting and overall ingredient preferences). This color, 5N is the best shade for me. 5N's from other brands looked similar after applying, however faded much faster (2.5 - 3 weeks) and gave a weird brassy look. This brand's color holds up pretty well until i get around to coloring it (6-8 weeks). My adult hair is medium brown with hairline gray, which was mostly gray in the past (more on that later...). New hair growth is mostly coming in as my adult medium brown color. My childhood hair was light-medium brown with some strawberry blonde mixed in, which is important to note because my hair picks up red tones regardless of the shade of brown I pick. I've tried the lights, mediums and darks and all pick up my red undertones. The color always looks different in the sun, shade and indoors. I judge what I like on how it looks indoors or in the shade. Photo #1 - taken inside in the bathroom, day after coloring. Photo #4 - taken outside in the sunlight, same day as photo #1, . --Photos 1 and 4 reflect coloring using 1/2 oz argan oil mixed into HERBATINT coloring (can still be applied using a brush)-- Photo #2 - taken outside in the shade, the day after coloring. Photo #3 - taken outside in sunlight, the day after coloring. --Photos 2 and 3 reflect using 1 oz argan oil mixed into HERBATINT coloring (must be applied using a bottle)-- Manipulating the color using Argan Oil... When I first tried this product it dried my hair out, feeling a bit coarse. I really liked the color result, so I decided to alter the formula by adding argan oil, which made a huge difference in how my hair felt after coloring. The more argan oil use, the lighter the color result. You can do an argan oil treatment the day before coloring and still get the moisturizing benefits when you color, but mixing in about 1/2 oz with the color makes it much easier to apply. Hair feels better afterwards too. After I apply color to the roots as instructed, I then thoroughly mix the argan oil into the coloring and apply, starting again at the roots and going all the way down. I've experimented using up to an ounce. As you can see in the photos, the amount of argan oil used changes the color depth. Using 1/2 oz argan, as in pics 1 and 4, definitely gives a deeper color, both indoors and out. Using 1 oz lightens it up quite a bit, but it's still a nice color. Graying... Many years ago I was very I'll. Among other issues, my hair began graying everywhere quickly and falling out fast, yet I was only in my 30's! Unusual hair loss and graying is considered a sign/symptom of something else. In my case it was poor gut health. Do a nutrient check! Deficiencies in B12, B9, D, iron, copper and zinc are all associated with premature graying. After radically cleaning up my diet and lifestyle habits, my gut health began to improve, as did my skin health. New hair growth was mostly coming in as my normal adult color and hair loss was also normalizing. Remember, long hair falling out in the shower looks like a lot more hair than short hair does, when it's sitting in a clump on the drain top. Just get to know what's normal for you and you'll know if improvements are happening, regardless of what you're monitoring (hair loss, effects of dietary/lifestyle changes, supplement use, etc.). Scalp health, normalizing sebum... 100% Jojoba oil is something I began using as I cleaned up the chemicals and additives in my my skincare products. I used to apply it to my scalp every other night to normalize sebum production, which in turn normalizes overly dry or overly oily skin, which in turn affects premature graying and hair loss. Now that my sebum production is more normal, I use it once or twice a month on my scalp. Using jojoba all over my body after showing tremendously improved my dry skin, without being oily. Doing this after each showering... Adding a few drops of 100% pure peppermint essential oil to jojoba oil when applying to the scalp will energize the scalp, stimulating even more hair growth. Adding a few drops of 100% pure rosemary essential oil to the mix is even better. I do this at night, massaging it in with my fingertips on the scalp area. I use cotton sheets and the oil residue doesn't stain them. If not applying overnight, then leave on for at least an hour before showering. Depending on how much peppermint you use, you may feel a slight tingling on the scalp. The feeling will intensity when showering. I like it.

(the best way to apply the dye is using a bowl and brush. A set with different sizes of brushes that make it easier to color smaller areas,like behind the ears. In reading the bad reviews for this I can only think the person used it on oily hair,in which case the dye stuck to oil or other hair care products (sprays,gels,leave in conditioner,conditioner/product build up which coats the hair;or hair that was unwashed/oily("dirty"). ) Other bad reviews show the person doesn't understand the product and had heavy-chemical mass produced/commercial haircolor products expectations in mind. Other bad reviews indicate they didn't allow processing time. I have used this product for over 15 years,only doing the roots to cover grey/silver that comes with being past 40. My results have been very good. This product does not lighten hair,though colors 8N and above can lighten hair. The way to get a truly lighter shade result might be to remove the color from your hair first,using a dye remover or professional hair bleach and THEN applying the dye (and subsequently doing the same process to the roots to achieve a uniform hair color;) But contacting herbatint first on using the product that way is the only thing to do. They might be able to give a better answer or a more accurate answer. I do know THE ONLY way to dramatically change hair from a darker color to a blond is to bleach your hair first,or use a dye remover from a beauty supply house if you have dyed your hair,and THEN apply the blond shade. THIS will give a true blond color. I have done this process using a commercial grade hair color,way back around 1980. I used Clairol or something as my blond hair dye. A hair coloring bowl and brush is the best way to apply the dye. There are several to choose from with a wide range of prices. If quality is part of it I suppose the brushes could be a better quality,and some sets or kits have a choice of brush sizes or include hair clips to seperate hair into sections to see and dye the roots more easily. I think the clips are awkward,myself but having the hair sectioned into seperate areas has advantages and lets you apply the dye more quickly. Small pony tail bands might be better for fine hair,which is what I have. Leaving herbatint on for the full processing time is needed. If I have a larger area to cover,instead of taking the time with a larger application,which takes longer to apply,I will do it in two applications so I don't have to worry about dye being on my hair for longer than 40 minutes,with the dye last applied being in the 35 to 40 minute time frame. The processing time being too short will be another reason grey coverage was not achieved,along with the dye washing-off if the hair was oily or coated with other hair care products when it was used. The dye will stick to the gunk or oil on the hair. Instead of being on the strands of hair themselves,the dye instead is on hair care coatings or hair oil,all of which wash off,taking the dye right along with it. Also,the dye is DARKER on the hair after being applied. And the hair stays darker for about 2 weeks. If a chestnut or lighter color was used,the hair will look much darker than anticipated,for about 2 weeks,7 to 10 washings in 14 days. It DOES lose the heavy pigmentation and lighten up after normal washing,after about 2 weeks. Possibly my good results are because I don't use the dye,at all,on anything but the roots. I don't add color to hair that has already been colored at the roots. And my hair is very natural looking. And healthy looking. Also I periodically,6 to 10 times a year,use an undiluted straight foodgrade white vinegar rinse on my hair,which removes shampoo and conditioner residue from the hair. And so when I use the dye,my hair has minimal or no hair care products build up on it. (this is just using about 16 ozs white vinegar in a large bowl). Kneeling in the bath tub I put the top of my head in the bowl. Then I use a comb and plastic 1/2 cup measuring cup to scoop the vinegar onto my hair and pour it over my hair,combing it through with a detangling comb. The half cup measuring cup is an arbitrary thing. It was what I grabbed the first time I did this so I just stuck with it. After putting the vinegar on (starting with dry,not wet or freshly washed hair),I rinse it out,thoroughly,in the shower,and then wash and condition my hair . White vinegar is a GREAT soap scum buster and removes shampoo and conditioner build up on the hair. In recommending this I have to stress,DO NOT get vinegar in your eyes. It burns like crazy. I don't think it damages them but it feels like it could be doing damage,because it burns and stings. Being Very Careful and also keeping a wet cloth nearby to wipe across the area if or when some vinegar might get in is the thing to do. Also,undiluted vinegar on the skin,face neck,back,chest and shoulder area,causes an alarming reddening of the skin. This is temporary. For people with skin problems or skin conditions,asking doctor or looking up info online is important to see if you shouldn't use undiluted white vinegar. Also it shouldn't be used where sores or broken skin can be affected by it because it would sting and burn when it entered the wound or broken skin or the irritated skin if someone has a definite skin condition that is known or diagnosed. If skin reddening concerns you,put a teaspoonful of undiluted white vinegar on your shoulder or neck ;or just put it on the inside of your forearm where allergy patch-tests are most often recommended [it is only vinegar but there are a small percentage of people who have skin conditions that could make using it a bad idea,so my cautionary note is along the lines of "don't use or immerse blow dryer while you are in the bath tub". ] If the skin reddens then the redness goes away within 10 or 20 minutes,that is normal. If you have concerns,don't use it or consult your doctor or dermatologist first. Erring on the side of caution because certain people might be adversely affected using undiluted white vinegar. But for what it does,if it doesn't bother someone in what it does under normal circumstances,it certainly is effective and worthwhile to use. And so is the herbatint N series permanent hair dye. You get good results and grey coverage and the product meets expectations as long as you use it the way the directions say to use it and don't have unrealistic expectations when using it. This,the Normalizing Shampoo and also the Royal Cream Conditioner are vegan. Not all of the herbatint products are vegan but the permanent hair color and the shampoo and conditioner mentioned here are. I'm not sure if the temporary hair color gel is or not. Hope this helps. It is a good product and does what it says it does. If what you expect differs from the product description,consulting a licensed stylist or using a product that says it does what you expect it to do is the only solution. A product can't be blamed for mistakes the consumer made or if someone expected results this product makes no claim to achieve. I think I have bought this item at amazon at least one time. If not I assume the 'verified purchase' will not show up.

I’m not really sure where to start so I’ll just say I’ve been dying my own hair for years. I’ve had every color under the sun, but started a new job and had to dye some of my funky colors back to just natural black. I’ve used this hair dye once before, and I wasn’t the biggest fan of the consistency, it’s very liquidy with not a lot to hold it together. The hair dye lasted long enough, and it did cover up my grays. Fast-forward a year, I went to use it again. I’m not sure what happened, if they changed the formula to include PPD or PTD (those I am allergic to, confirmed through an allergy test) as my scalp was furiously itchy, as well as anywhere the hair dye got like behind my ears. I woke up the next morning, and both of my eyes were puffy and almost swollen shut. Really disappointing as the color came out beautiful, my hair feels nice without being dried out or brittle but my scalp itches so badly and my ears are on fire. Had to take tons of antihistamines to carry myself through it and ended up using a dandruff shampoo to get majority of the hair dye out. Be sure to do a swatch test before using this dye - because I had used it once before I assumed I didn’t have to this time but with how materials are changing and companies are cutting product products with different additives or formula changes, better safe than sorry.

I have been using this product for 2 years and love it! No chemical smells, instructions are easy to follow, and application is a breeze! But...I do not have much gray to cover. I only use for the rich color, condition, and shine. I use maybe once a month or every 6 weeks. I have thin, above shoulder length hair, so one box lasts me for 3 applications. My friend has LOTS of hair and more gray to cover, she is from Spain, and has used this product forever. She just uses more than one box. Her hair always looks amazing!

I really wanted to like this hair dye, but unfortunately I just cannot recommend it. First the positives: While it does still have a smell, it is extremely slight and not bad at all. Least amount of smell I've used of any hair dye. Second, the color is very pigmented and seems very true to the tone. Though I got a color too dark (my own fault), I was a little worried when I was mixing it up because I wanted a cool tone and the mixed up color looked straight up red. However once it processed it was definitely cool. It was my first (and only) time using this so I don't know how it will fade out as my hair always turns warm anyways. I'll be interested to see how long it takes to turn brassy. The dye is extremely pigmented. Cons: I made the mistake of only getting one box because the advertising made it seem like it had more product than a regular store-bought box of dye (they say they include reusable bottles for touch ups). I should have researched that more and gotten another bottle just in case though. That's my fault. My hair is a few inches below my shoulders (near my collar bone) so not crazy long, but it is fine, and I have a lot of it. I ran out about close to 3/4 of the way working through my hair and ended up having to order another box to finish up another day. Luckily I didn't have to go anywhere. Again, this is somewhat my fault for not ordering a backup box. Now, the biggest issue I have with this product is the application. The formula is extremely unique in that I've never used another dye like it, and I have used a lot of different brands. It's supposed to be a no-drip formula. Well if you're like me, it will still drip. However, I think that it unfortunately makes the formula difficult to work with. The two parts are basically liquid until you mix them and they become this thick almost-jelly like substance. The problem I had was that it has very little slip and did not spread easily through the hair. I think because it's supposed to be that "no-drip" formula it stays in place pretty easily where you put it, and does not spread out easily. This made for extremely patchy coverage. And because I got a color too dark (again my own fault) it made the patchy parts stand out a lot because my starting hair was so much lighter. (Hello tiger stripes) Even after I got the second box to finish off my hair, I went back over some of the patchy spots and the coverage still looked off. I actually think a regular applicator bottle would work better for this type of formula instead of a brush so you can spread it thickly all over each strand and work it in with your hands. A brush just didn't apply easily, and if you're a beginner or doing a much different/darker color it's not going to be an easy formula to hide application mistakes like a lot of other box dyes. Also, once it gets on your hair it feels like it sucks all the moisture of your hair. It was bizarre. My hair became almost like a hard shell while it was processing. And because of that, trying to wet it in the shower and brush through with my fingers to make sure the water was penetrating every part made me shed a LOT more hair than normal because it felt so matted and dried together. I used the provided conditioner with it, which was okay, but I did not feel like it was conditioning enough based on how dry my hair felt after rinsing, so I added my own hair mask to my ends to give it some extra moisture and conditioning. Overall, I just can't recommend this hair dye, especially if you're beginner or looking for a more fool-proof dye to make sure your application is even.
