  • Works perfectly, looks good. Great pice. G-Drive quality and efficiency.
Capacity: 4TB Style: Drive
This is about the fifth G-Drive unit I've bought over the years and I've always been impressed. This is used as the Time Machine back to my iMac and sits along side an earlier G-Drive 3TB unit I use to store my photos. So with these two, plus cloud back up of the whole system, I feel somewhat secure! The unit arrived fast and as I found in the past is no problem to set up - essentially plug and play. It just works. It's quiet (even quieter than the older 3TB unit). It's doesn't get hot, just slightly warm. It looks good sitting on my desk along side the 3TB model and the brushed metal finish matches the iMac. I don't want to tempt fate, but I've never had a G-Drive failure. I'm sure it will happen eventually but so far they've all been impressive. ... show more

  • So far, so good!
Capacity: 4TB Style: Drive
I noticed there was a lot of negative reviews on this device. I was skeptical about buying it at first but it was also an Amazon choice as well and, most of the time, I trust those options. Other online stores that have the same brand were filled with positive reviews but were overpriced. I had my eye on this particular external hard drive for a while and I needed one quick because I do audio/music production, I was afraid that my computer was going to slow down due to the fact that I had a lot of audio plugin software that uses an enormous amount of power. In spite of the fact that I still had a LOT of storage left on my computer, I wanted to save it some power to have a smoother and faster workflow. I chose the G-Technology external hard drive because it looks very attractive and, as of now, I haven't had any problems with it so far after one week of usage. It works great and everything seems to be working according to the plan. Hopefully, it'll stay this way for as long as possible. I do vocal recording, audio engineering and music production on the same computer as my workflow has gotten even better because of the external hard drive. I love it! ... show more

  • Works perfectly for my use...just ordered a second drive for redundancy
Capacity: 4TB Style: Drive
I’m a long time G Drive fan and have been using them since 2007 (I still have two 500 gigabyte drives that I use for music and photos). My current 4tb G drive is exactly two years old and works perfectly as a time machine back up for my MacBook Pro. I toyed with purchasing a NAS but by purchasing a second 4tb G Drive for an alternating time machine back up I’ll effectively have a RAID array. I already save important files (photos, music, ebooks, etc) separately on other back up drives so the additional second drive is an additional fail safe. I was initially a bit concerned about the large number of one star reviews but if I receive a faulty drive I’ll simply return it or submit a warranty claim. These drives don’t receive gentle handling from delivery companies. While they are durable drives some aren’t going to survive unscathed when being tossed around during the delivery process. I’ll update this review after I’ve used the second drive (arriving today). Hopefully I’ll continue to have a good experience! Update 10/19: my second unit arrived. After unpacking and letting it acclimate to room temperature I set it up as my second time machine drive. Everything works as expected with zero issues. Both drives function perfectly, aren’t noisy, and just run smoothly in the background. If that changes, I’ll update accordingly. ... show more

  • Easy backup tool, works with Apple Time Machine
Capacity: 4TB Style: Drive
Set up was easy, worked with Apple Time Machine right out of the box. I bought it to replace an Apple Sirport Express which had crashed. Airport is a router that also has an internal storage disk, and Time Machine backs up your device(s) to Airport automatically. The only feature about G-Technology 4TB G-Drive USB External hard drive is that it does not work (that is, I can't figure out how to make it work) through the network; that is, through the wireless router. You have to plug your device into the G-Technology 4TB G-Drive USB External hard drive to back up the device. Which it does quickly & easily, which is what I really wanted most of all. ... show more

  • Great drive especially for the price
Capacity: 6TB Style: Drive
The drive was recognized as soon as I plugged it into my Macbook Pro (mid-2009) (the quick start mentions the on/off power-button in case you didn't notice it), but I did First Aid and erased disk anyway. I was worried (based on other reviews) about noise and heat. I'm currently 10% into a TimeMachine backup of 500G and the case is only warm to the touch and much quieter than my older 7200rpm external drive (which has a fan). You do hear head servo seek noises but not loud nor unexpected for a mechanical drive. This is plugged into my older MBP (with USB) but I plan to use it with my soon-to-arrive new MBP (with Thunderbolt 3). I don't particularly care about speed since I plan to only do TimeMachine so I didn't benchmark it; TimeMachine estimated 21 hr for a full backup which converts into 6MB/s all in at the app layer, which is fine with me for incrementals. Will update if my experience changes using my new MBP or if problems arise later. Note that I selected a wall-powered 7200rpm because this is only for backups done from my desk and not portable use (I have cloud backup for on-the-go and I like using my big-screen monitor for working). If you need a truly portable option, the USB-powered 5400rpm, would be a better (but somewhat slower) option. ... show more

  • Very satisfied - quality product
Capacity: 4TB Style: Drive
I am very pleased with the quality of this hard drive. It was plug-n-play (for a Mac), just as advertised. I took it out of the box, plugged it in, and off we went. I had previously had a Seagate external hard drive which has lasted happily for many years, so originally I ordered another Seagate (3 TB). As soon as I took the new Seagate out of the box I could see it was cheaply made. The sheet metal case had sharp corners that would cut skin. I sent it back immediately. A friend of mine has a portable (1 TB) G-Tech drive, one of two we trade back and forth to store our date off-site at each other's h comes. I had been very impressed with the quality of my friend's little G-Tech drive, so I ordered my 4 TB G-Tech drive (which lives permanently in my house for backup). I had read online reviews which rated G-Tech drives highly. It has the look and feel of a quality product. I have not had it long enough to make any statements about how it will hold up over time. But it was one of the few I found that has an ON/OFF SWITCH - a very important feature to me, since switching on the drive only when I want to back up saves greatly on wear on the drive, as opposed to other drives which are left running full time. G-Tech's tech support was very helpful in answering my questions before I bought the unit. ... show more

  • Hot-running drive with the illusion of a heat dissipating case
Capacity: 6TB Style: Drive
Review of: G-Technology 6TB G-DRIVE USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive, Silver - Compact, High-Performance Storage - 0G03674-1 I purchased the 6 TB G-Drive in Oct. 2018, based entirely on my experience with an older model aluminum case G-Drive that has kept its hard drive nice and cool. After reading reports from server-farm operators that drive temperature is the single most important factor in drive longevity and having experienced more than one early death of an external drive in a sealed plastic enclosure, I’m a bit of a fanatic on keeping my drives cool. It is hard to find a good aftermarket drive enclosure that isn’t mostly plastic and this G-Drive model looked like a winner. I routinely run a full surface scan of new hard drives with StableBit Scanner. With external drives like this G-Drive I arrange fans and heat sinks to keep them cool during the scan which can last many hours. After 2 hours of scanning, The G-Drive’s aluminum shell was cool to the touch, but StableBit Scanner reported the drive’s temperature at 123.8 degrees F, in spite of having a 120mm fan below the drive and a big aluminum heat sink on top with another 120mm fan blowing on it. After the scan completed successfully, the idle temperature fell to 114.8 degrees F. Two other 6TB USB 3 drives (both WDs in well ventilated plastic cases) ran at 91.2 and 93.2F respectively during scans. Curious as to why the G-Drive ran so hot, I opened up the case. Inside the thick aluminum shell, the hard drive itself is held in an un-vented, thick plastic 'boat' that wraps around all but the top side. The seeming vents on the front panel are fake and blocked off by the plastic boat. There is a dead air space between the top of the drive and the aluminum outer shell. The drive is held in the plastic boat by flexible tabs with rubber shock bushings. If you buy a G-Drive that comes in this housing, you are paying extra for style, but not for function. The 6TB drive in mine is an HGST 7200 RPM "Enterprise" model: HGST Ultrastar 7K6000 HUS726060ALE610 6TB 7200 RPM 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" . If you buy the 6 TB version today, that may not be what’s inside. The drive produces noticeable seek noises and there is a large, bright ”G” logo that flashes during activity on the front of the case that is very distracting, so the fancy case is wasted on me as I don’t want to have it in earshot or in sight. There is a wall-wart to supply power and an on/off button on the back of the G-Drive’s case. The drive will continue to spin after the host computer is turned off unless switched off, unlike most other external USB drives that automatically power down. Because of the product’s poor heat transfer, even with extreme cooling, I am unwilling to use this G-Drive for any important data. ... show more

  • Purchased as a scratch disk for my Final Cut Pro X (FCPX) Events and Projects - Does the Job Purchased as a scratch disk for my Final Cut Pro X (FCPX) Events and Projects - Does the Job
Capacity: 6TB Style: Drive
I'm using this G-Drive 6TB (7200rpm) external drive to manage about 3TB of existing Final Cut Pro X (FCPX) material and for all new video material. I'm an FCPX "hobbyist" not a "professional" so I wasn't prepared to spend significantly more for a faster Thunderbolt drive to use with my new iMac (2017). My previous drives were also G-Drives, but they were FW800 drives (3TB & 2TB) and would have required two separate adapters to connect to the Thunderbolt 3 port on the new iMac. RESULTS: All my footage is shot in 1080i and I haven't experience any noticeable lag in FCPX using the USB 3.0 connected G-Drive to my iMac. I've attached a screenshot of the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test (free App from the Apple Store) that I used to stress test the G-Drive. This free app is an easy-to-use tool to quickly measure and certify disk performance when working with high quality video. I'm please with the results for my G-Drive based on MY use. Based on the test results, there should be no "speed" issues with the G-Drive for the type of video I work with in FCPX. Setup: iMac 27" Retina 4.2 GHz Intel Core i7 (2017) 1TB SSD 24GB Memory G-Technology G-Drive 6TB USB 3.0 ... show more
