I got this for hosting Christmas Eve dinner on my patio. It was a cool night and I had this installed a few days before. It helped take the chill off but didn't actually warm the area. I've used it again since and had the same experience with it. As you can see from the pictures, I've installed it outdoors in an open/unroofed area. I imagine it might work better where the heat is able to be contained. Don't get me wrong, it does offer heat and it doesn't require time to warm up which is great, but I'm not sure I'd recommend this to someone going to use it purely outdoors as I have. ... show more

I bought this and mounted it on the side of my outdoor deck overlooking my turtle pond. I was concerned with the cold weather we were having because it was forcing my turtles into semi-hibernation and threatened to kill my koi fish. With this heater alone, it warms the whole pond area and even brought the water temperature up, making it more comfortable for the fish. The turtles love it! They crawl up the banks of their pond to get close to it and bask in its warm light. I like the subtle orange glow at night-time because it allows me to see the turtles sleeping comfortably next to it and even the fish in the water seem to glow luminescently. This fish and the turtles have both become more active and are eating better, and I don't worry about them anymore. This unit was exactly what I wanted and it works fantastically. Easy to install. Unobtrusive. Aesthetic. Functional. Can't beat it. ***Update. The unit worked great for several months, but then it just stopped working. It got a lot of use while it worked, and it was outside. I'm a cigar smoker who is relegated to the outside by the wifely unit. That means I freeze while I smoke or abstain altogether during the cooler months. My hope was that this heater would help extend the cigar-smoking season or banish the cold-weather altogether. I was anxious to receive and begin using this heater. Unfortunately, it arrived DOA, which required a call to Customer Support. They diagnosed a blown lamp and mailed a replacement out. A week later, I was in business. As heating units go, this one is "okay". It adequately heats enough space to keep me warm while I'm on the back deck. It does not throw a large enough bubble of warmth to cover a larger space, though. Keep in mind, this on my back deck, with no walls to help contain the heat.     • I'm keeping my kerosene torpedo heater

I was really looking forward to getting rid of my torpedo heater because it is a hassle to use. Have to keep kerosene on hand, then move a car out of the garage to actually use it due to space limitations. I got my infrared heater yesterday and mounted it in the garage to one of the rafters closest to the front ends of the cars, centered between the two cars. It was about 27 degrees last night and when I plugged it in I was disappointed with the amount of heat that it puts out. Sure, if you are within about three or four feet from the unit there is sufficient heat, but this thing is supposed to throw a blanket of heat out to about 10'. In reality that doesn't happen. What I think would help is a fan to blow some of the heated air out into the room. I'm keeping it because it can take the chill off when I'm working under the hood of my car, but for the rest of the garage, I have my trusty but smelly torpedo heater that can warm my entire uninsulated garage within a matter of ten minutes. ... show more

Easy to assemble. I do highly recommend that you us the mounting hardware and resit the temptation to mount directly. It is easy to swing from side to side and up and down. The swiveling mount keeps it farther form the wooden beam where mine is mounted. Not that it need to be because it has very adequate shielding, but the small distance gives me me peace of mind. The first night we used it the outside temperature was 42 degrees Farenheit. I glowed a cozy orange and radiated heat on an area of about 12 feet by 8 feet wide. Perfect for the oval sofa and two seat that comprise our outdoor covered seating area. I wold only have added an on and off switch. Worked great until the heating element burned out after less then a month. I read one review that says the element can burn out prematurely if it's not on a dedicated circuit. I'm going to try rewiring it with a new bulb and hope for better results. Update:

This is one sorry product. I'm on heater #4 and the longest lived one has lasted about 2 months. The last one lasted 3 days. Patio heaters won't respond to my request for warranty replacement. I bought a bulb for 68.00 to repair one lamp - that's the one that lasted 3 days after the original lamp lasted 3 weeks. They are on a thermostat in a small greenhouse. Twice I have had to grab portable heaters in the middle of the night to keep my plants from freezing. I would definitely not recommend this product to anyone. The only good thing I can say is that I bought the first one from Sams with a replacement warranty. They replaced it no questions asked. It has been working for about 2 weeks the second one broke 2 nights ago. I love the convenience of Amazon but it appears that when you buy it from them, you own it and good luck if it breaks. ... show more
