I was impressed with the sturdiness of this machine. It was easy to put together, easy to move, easy to use, and performed well at chipping branches after pruning trees on my property. It did exactly what I needed and matched my expectations. I was skeptical that I could get something like this for under $100, so was pleasantly surprised. It easily handles branches up to .6 inches in thickness with no problems at all. It will unhappily do branches up to 1 inch, i.e. it slows down and you will hear a lot of clanking sounds inside the case. Above 1 inch or anything above 0.6 with knots or protruding nodes will cause a jam and to remove it you will have to unplug it and open the case (no tools required). You can sometimes get away with softer, older wood that has been sitting outside for a while, up to about 1.125 inches in thickness. Have your loppers nearby, because forks in branches will also cause a jam. Branches definitely need to be cut into straight single pieces before feeding them in. Thin branches, i.e. the kind likely to be actually holding leaves, are not turned into any kind of mulch, they are just cut into smaller twigs. I tried branches with dried leaves, which worked, but the leaves were not broken down nearly as much as the branches were. Can it do just leaves? Not very quickly, as the feeder is not designed for feeding lots of leaves into it. It also had absolutely no effect at all on pine or juniper needles. These were spit out the other end whole. The mulch it creates is relative to the thickness of branch, but even with the largest thickness this machine creates fine chips, not nuggets, which are nowhere near the size of what you would buy at the store to cover garden beds. It will not match or blend in with anything you already have. I used it to cover and prevent weeds on some areas that are out of sight behind my home. Absolutely wear goggles, gloves, and a dust mask. This thing spits out a lot of dust and debris and the branches really vibrate quite a bit as you are feeding them in. I found only leather work gloves were able to dull the vibrations, but also had to be careful not to let the gloves get pulled in as you lose a bit of sense of touch with leather. Long branches also tend to create a bit of a whipping effect, so you have to be careful that they don't bop you in the face as you are feeding them in.

This little chipper is fantastic. For those branches 1.8 or less in diameter. Chippings make great ground cover. Easy enough for an old lady to use, not to noisy.

This guy will grind up kitchen and small garden wastes for composting but it struggles with things bigger than your index finger … and grapevine cuttings.

This machine is awesome. I have a 200 ft stretch of bushes that over grown for years to 30+ feet. Coupled with a cheap pole saw they ate through the bushes like nothing . There's only a small ten foot area left to do and the blade has dulled a bit but still chipping away. The mulch has looked nice around. Would buy again...but don't need too because it's quality is great

It is good for medium sized sticks. Too large and it will stall. Too small and they will pass straight through.

Excellent value! Very strong motor for its size and true to reviews, can easily chop through up to about 1 1/2" hardwood branches. It grinds them up very fast and provides excellent mulch. I would avoid longer leaves as it can clog the blade mechanism up. Glad I got it after flori-DUH's hard freeze as I've had to trim lots of my tree branches.
